Dundee & St Andrews 2020/21 www.theentertainmentguide.co.uk 5 INTRODUCTION long the east coast of Scotland, where the sun sparkles off the water, you’ll find two of Scotland’s most intriguing spots: the bustling city of Dundee and the historic town of St Andrews. Very different at first glance, yet both packed with attractions, entertainment and culture. If you’re heading along the coast then it’s well worth trying to fit them both into your visit. St Andrews is known as the city of golf, and with the world-famous Royal and Ancient Golf Club and the stunning links course, there’s no doubt that golf lovers will find their spiritual home here. However, there’s so much more to St Andrews than golf alone, with a rich history of culture, arts and education, as well a quaint town centre with a range of quirky, independent shops and high quality cafes and restaurants. The historic university is one of the jewels of the town. Its beautiful campus buildings are spread throughout the centre, many open to the public, and through the academic year the huge influx of students give a vigour and international atmosphere to the town. History lovers are spoilt for choice, with the stunning ruin of St Andrews Castle balanced on a rocky outcrop overlooking the sea, while the graceful arches of St Andrews Cathedral provide astonishing foundations to explore. The Kingdom of Fife in which St Andrews resides is so-called for good reason. With its lush countryside, clean beaches and quaint fishing villages, this regal land attracts visitors from far and wide. In the Royal Burgh of St Andrews, some of the world’s greatest golf courses are flanked by hotels and restaurants that epitomise great Scottish hospitality. Alternatively, take a trip through the East Neuk and sample locally-caught crab, mackerel and lobster that’s as fresh as it gets. Just a short trip up the coast, and set on the Tay estuary, Dundee is Scotland’s sunniest city, and the outlook is definitely bright here. From boats bobbing gently in Broughty Ferry Harbour to busy bars, fresh seafood restaurants, family attractions and quaint cafes, there’s plenty to do and see in the City of Discovery. There’s a plethora of cultural treats to check out, including the Discovery Point Antarctic Museum, Verdant Works, and the long awaited V&A Design Museum, opening this year. If you like your history a little more medieval, then Broughty Castle at the mouth of the river Tay offers a fascinating insight into the life and times of Broughty Ferry, while the stunning 14th century Glamis Castle is close enough for an easy drive out. When the sun goes down, the culture doesn’t stop, with the Dundee Repertory Theatre home to world-class acting companies. 6 For offers and promotions: @entguide_dundee Dundee & St Andrews 2020/21 Shopping in Dundee is always a pleasure, with two major shopping centres – the Overgate and Wellgate – plus numerous high street retailers and several streets lined with specialist shops. With farmers’ and continental markets frequently coming to the city, there’s always something happening. Flick through the pages of this guide and you’ll be furnished with the sort of knowledge that would otherwise take years to accrue. Even if you were born and raised around Dundee and St Andrews, there’s sure to be a few gems you’ve heard great things about but have yet to investigate. Perhaps it’s time to take a closer look. Whether you’re visiting for business, pleasure or a little bit of both, keep this publication close at hand. From gastro-pubs to golf courses, The Entertainment Guide contains everything you need to get the very best out of Dundee and St Andrews. Since the brand launch in 2000, visitors to our national website have requested recognition for the best venues throughout Great Britain and Ireland. Obviously this is very difficult with a wide range of top establishments which feature within the guides. What I decided to do was acknowledge these requests by the general public by awarding a Certificate of Excellence, which over the years now adorn the walls and receptions of many businesses. So keep posting the comments and remember if you appear in your city edition, you have been recommended or reviewed by us, so keep up the high standards. www.theentertainmentguide.co.uk Remember...this is the original Entertainment Guide... accept no other!!
