GEORGIA STATE UNIVERSITY, 1990 M.A. UNIVERSITY OF WISCONSIN- MILWAUKEE, 1995 “OUR ART ITSELF WAS OUR ACTIVISM”: ATLANTA’S NEIGHBORHOOD ARTS CENTER, 1975-1990 Committee Chair: Richard Allen Morton. Ph.D. Dissertation dated May 2012 This cultural history study examined Atlanta’s Neighborhood Arts Center (NAC), which existed from 1975 to 1990, as an example of black cultural politics in the South. As a Black Arts Movement (BAM) institution, this regional expression has been missing from academic discussions of the period. The study investigated the multidisciplinary programming that was created to fulfill its motto of “Art for People’s Sake.” The five themes developed from the program research included: 1) the NAC represented the juxtaposition between the individual and the community, local and national; 2) the NAC reached out and extended the arts to the masses, rather than just focusing on the black middle class and white supporters; 3) the NAC was distinctive in space and location; 4) the NAC seemed to provide more opportunities for women artists than traditional BAM organizations; and 5) the NAC had a specific mission to elevate the social and political consciousness of black people. In addition to placing the Neighborhood Arts Center among the regional branches of the BAM family tree, using the programmatic findings, this research analyzed three themes found to be present in the black cultural politics of Atlanta which made for the center’s unique grassroots contributions to the movement. The themes centered on a history of politics, racial issues, and class dynamics.

    ST ANDREWS-LOCHES ALLIANCE President’s Report, year ended 31st December 2019 2019 began with our now traditional New Year Drinks Party. This was a very pleasant gathering of about 25 members during which I was able to announce the Alliance Programme for the coming year. We continued to run the bar for the first three SCO concerts at the Younger Hall, which raised on average about £130. We are grateful to the SCO for bearing the cost of the necessary ‘occasional licences’. This activity has come to a temporary halt while the Younger Hall is closed for refurbishment. In April we welcomed a group of golfers from Loches. The Community Council kindly offered a trophy and this was contested by the Loches golfers and a team made up mostly of Alliance golfing members. With some financial support from the Links Trust, matches took place over the Strathtyrum, Jubilee and Eden courses. The Alliance team narrowly beat the guests and won the trophy which was presented by Callum McLeod, Provost of St Andrews at a dinner on the last night of the visit. A return match in the Loches area is planned for 2020. A group of pupils from Madras College once again visited their partner school in Loches, Collège Georges Besse. The Alliance was able to contribute £800 to help make this possible. We are very keen to support this exchange as it offers local pupils the opportunity to visit our twin town, practise their language skills and experience the French way of life. We were disappointed that the French school was unable to make a return visit, due largely to their concerns over the situation surrounding Brexit.

    About the High Museum of Art The High Museum of Art is the leading art museum in the Southeastern United States. Located in Atlanta’s Midtown arts and business district, the High has more than 14,000 works of art in its permanent collection. The Museum has an extensive anthology of 19th- and 20th-century American and decorative art; significant holdings of European paintings; a growing collection of African American art; and burgeoning collections of modern and contemporary art, folk art, photography, and African art. The High is also dedicated to supporting and collecting works by Southern artists, and in 1996 the Museum launched its “Picturing the South” program to commission emerging and established photographers to create new work inspired by the Southern landscape. Established in 1905 as the Atlanta Art Association, the Museum’s first permanent home came in 1926, with the donation by Mrs. Joseph M. High of her family’s residence on Peachtree Street. In 1955, the Museum moved to a new brick structure adjacent to the old High house. After 122 Georgia art patrons died in a plane crash on a Museum-sponsored European tour in 1962, the Atlanta Arts Alliance was founded in their memory, and the Atlanta Memorial Arts Center opened in 1968—constructed around the existing Museum. In 1979, Coca-Cola magnate Robert W. Woodruff offered a $7.5 million challenge grant to build a new facility; Museum officials matched and exceeded the grant, generating a total of $20 million. The High Museum of Art’s building designed by noted architect Richard Meier opened to worldwide acclaim in 1983, and it has received many design awards, including a 1991 citation from the American Institute of Architects as one of the “ten best works of American architecture of the 1980s.” Meier’s 135,000-square-foot facility, now known as the Stent Family Wing, tripled the Museum’s space, enabling the institution to mount more comprehensive displays of its collections.

    FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE HIGH MUSEUM OF ART PREMIERES NORTH AMERICAN TOUR OF IRIS VAN HERPEN’S INNOVATIVE HAUTE COUTURE DESIGNS Major exhibition to feature recent works, including imaginative sculptural designs crafted using 3D-printing technology ATLANTA, Nov. 5, 2015 – The High Museum of Art is the first U.S. museum to present a major exhibition of work by visionary Dutch fashion designer Iris van Herpen, a cutting-edge artist inspired by diverse influences in the arts, sciences, music and philosophy. Marking the High’s first presentation of fashion design, “Iris van Herpen: Transforming Fashion” features one-of-a-kind haute couture—acclaimed for its combination of traditional craftsmanship and futuristic, innovative techniques—and includes some of the world’s first examples of 3D-printed fashion. The exhibition is co-organized with the Groninger Museum (the Netherlands) and debuts at the High, where it will be on view from Nov. 7, 2015, through May 15, 2016, before continuing on a North American tour. “Iris van Herpen’s work is an incredible fusion of artistic expression, craftsmanship and creativity,” said Sarah Schleuning, curator of decorative arts and design at the High. “The marriage of traditional, handcrafted designs and 21st-century technology makes her work innovative, dynamic and a signifier of a bold, new future for fashion design. Semi Annual Meeting Promotes Action on Initiatives At the March 2004 semi-annual meeting in Athens, speakers, discussions and round table sessions resulted in action steps on several GRC initiatives. The Communications Committee will be taking the “Why Is Recycling Important?” message to a Power Point presentation to be posted on our website and made available for member use. The Electronics Recycling round table discussions motivated local vendors to promote and participate in more residential collection of computers and computer peripherals via drop off sites and events handled by local program managers and KAB affiliates.
