7 Parliament tees off to support the world of golf

England Golf has welcomed the creation of an All-Party Parliamentary Group to support the game of golf. All-Party Groups comprise Members of both Houses of Parliament and all political

national news national parties who support specific interests. The Golf Group’s first meeting was held on Tuesday 19 January 2016 in the Houses of Parliament.

Rod Findlay, England Golf’s Director of Strategy and Governance, said: “England Golf welcomes the establishment of the All-Party Golf Group. Golf is the fifth largest sport in the country by participation and makes a huge sporting, social and economic contribution. We look forward to working with the Officers and Members of the Group to give golf a greater presence in Parliament and with Government”.

As well as Lords and MPs, the Group welcomes non-Parliamentarians as Associate Members, and invites organisations, clubs, and individuals to join the Group and attend meetings and provide their thoughts on various issues and any regulation that impacts on the sport.

To coincide with the launch of the Group, the website www.parliamentary.golf has been created and anyone interested in becoming an Associate Member can join by visiting the relevant page or can sign up to the Group’s news announcements. The Group has also created the account @ParliamentGolf.

The Group’s Chairman is Lincoln’s MP Karl McCartney who said: “I am delighted to be a part of this new Group. Golf is a sport enjoyed by everyone, and many of them are my constituents, but there is more that can be done to ensure the opportunities to play are there and barriers to being involved are removed. I am very much looking forward to welcoming Members of all parties into the Group and holding our first meeting in the New Year.”

Stephen Gethins, MP for North East – home of The R&A – is Vice-Chairman. He welcomed the creation of the Group as a vehicle for economic development as well as sport participation.

He said “Golf is incredibly important to the economy in North East Fife and elsewhere. It is also a fantastic way for people to be active, keep fit and play competitive and recreational sport. We have a great professional game in the , and it is important that we recognise the local benefits major tournaments can bring and ensure that those benefits are passed on to all in the game.”

T: 01902 700100 E: [email protected] www.patshull-park.co.uk9 Join the “The 3 Coaches” from the London Golf Show in Portugal national news national for an AMAZING coaching break!

In 2011 three PGA Golf Coaches met on stage at Earls Court for the London Golf Show. And now 9 shows later they are still packing audiences around the main stage for their innovative approach to playing and learning golf.

Tony Westwood, the main stage presenter joined the Golf Show Group team for his first show in 2011 and started to compile a programme for the main stage that would WOW the golfers that attended the show.

Joining him on stage for coaching duties were Gary Smith and Andy Gorman.

Tony had developed his unique approach over many years and latterly after working overseas for just over three years in Ukraine and Portugal and in 2013 he joined the Mind Fit Ltd Team as their Director of Sports. Gary specialises in the ‘Short Game’ and for 14 years was an England Golf Technical Coach to the elite men’s squad. Over the last 25 years Andy has developed successful coaching programmes for every level of Golfer. He is a ‘World-Renowned Putting Coach’ due mainly to the number of ‘Tour Pros’ who trust him with this vital area of the game.

10 After the success of that first show in 2011 and the popularity of the coaching sessions on the national news stage, the “Three Coaches” would play a bigger role in the format for future shows that continues to this day. Not only do they present individually on stage, they also join forces for their coaching “Masterclass” sessions and it was during one of these sessions that the idea was spawned for a coaching break either in the UK or overseas.

It was during the 2015 London Golf Show and a chat with Phil Rowland of Algarve Sports and Colin Wilson of Golf South/Golf North magazine. The idea was tabled for a trip to the Algarve using Phil’s connections in Portugal and that the trip would be run in association and with the full support of Golf South/Golf North Magazine.

The dates are set for June 2016 and the Amendoeira Resort, Alcantrilha, will host the inaugural event for the “Three Coaches Masterclass”.

For this first event, 24 golfers will share five days (4 nights) with Andy, Gary and Tony as they share their combined knowledge of over 90 years in professional golf. There will be a minimum of 3 hours coaching each day, with 3 groups of 8 golfers spending an hour with each coach each day.

They will also watch what progress is being made when the golfers step out onto the either the Faldo or O’Connor Championship Courses plus there will be an opportunity to use the floodlit 3 course.

The trip takes place from the 8th – 12th June 2016 and the package includes:

• 4 nights’ in luxury accommodation • Full board (excluding alcoholic drinks) • Dinner each evening hosted by Andy Gorman, Gary Smith and Tony Westwood • Golf on the Faldo/O’Connor/Par 3 Academy • Coaching each day with each coach in groups of 8 (min 3 hours per day) • Coaching starts on the 9th June 2016 • Free buggies • Unlimited range balls • Complimentary shuttle service within the resort • FREE use of the Amendoeira Sports facilities • FREE gift courtesy of Algarve Sports

Phil Rowland is the owner of Algarve Sports and is excited to be organising this event at the prestigious Amendoeira Resort, which also hosts sports teams form a host of disciplines to the resort including Premiership Football Clubs, Rugby Teams and European Football Clubs too.

Golf South/Golf North Magazine will be providing administrative support as well as promoting the trip throughout their media network.

All that is left is for the first 24 lucky golfers to book and join the team for this amazing experience to explore and discover what is possible for their golf.

The course puts no more emphasis on length than it does on the delicate approach shot or the well-struck medium or long-iron, but all these skills are examined during a round at Western Gailes. Perhaps that is why, combined with its beautiful setting and most warm welcome, it has captivated so many golfers for so long.

84 Three holes are typical. The elevated tee on the par 3 Ninth looks down on a small island green with a steep fall to the right, protected to the front and side by an array of deep bunkers that demand an accurate shot from anything between a wedge and three iron, depending on the wind.

Silloth’s signature hole is the par 5 Thirteenth, with a drive over gorse to a deceptively wide fairway. A tight second through a narrow gully, into the prevailing wind, must negotiate an angled slope that deflects all but the most accurate of approaches to an elevated green at the top of a ridge.

The final hole requires an accurate drive on to an angled fairway, usually with the help of the prevailing wind, before a long approach in to the final green under the critical gaze of those safely ensconced in the Nineteenth Hole. The player can then enjoy the comforts of the busy and atmospheric clubhouse: a meal made with local produce; and above all, a warm Cumbrian welcome.

26738_Linden Golf Society Advert AW.indd 1 17/12/2015 11:30 Cheshire announce changes to matchplay championship

The Cheshire Union of Golf Clubs has announced radical changes to their Matchplay Championship. First played in 1964, the County Matchplay is one of the County’s major championships. The first two championships were won by the Cheshire legend Gordon Edwards of Bromborough with his fourth and final win at Wallasey Golf Club in 1986. Jon Beesley of Mere GC was the 2015 winner.

ENGLAND – NORTH WEST ENGLAND – NORTH Recently, the entry for this event has fallen from a frequently oversubscribed entry to a field of 53 out of 64 in 2015. In an effort to increase the entry the County have introduced a 36 hole Strokeplay qualifying round to decide who moves forward to the knockout stages. The 16 players with the lowest aggregate scratch scores will qualify to play for the Cheshire Matchplay Championship by scratch .

In addition, the 8 players with the lowest aggregate nett scores failing to qualify for the Cheshire Matchplay Championship will play for the Cheshire Matchplay Plate by handicap match play off full handicap allowance. A further addition will be a Seniors Matchplay. Eight senior golfers (over 55) who have previously pre-qualified, will play for the Cheshire Seniors Matchplay Championship by scratch match play.

Cheshire County Secretary, Stephen Foster said “Over the years, entry for this event has fallen. The only reason I can think of is a dislike of Matchplay and the possibility of an early exit. The very nature of the event requires a field reduction of 50% after each round. This new format will provide entrants with a minimum of 36 holes of golf, all aiming to qualify for the KO stages. The introduction of the Handicap Matchplay element should be an added incentive to enter. By moving to this format, we were also able to introduce a Matchplay event for our Cheshire Seniors; a qualifying round will be played at an earlier date with the top 8 scratch scores moving forward to the KO stages. This will produce three finals on the final day. We believe these changes will enhance the event raising it back to its previous status of a major Championship”.

The 2016 event is to be played at Caldy Golf Club over Friday to Sunday, 20th, 21st & 22nd May.

The tournament was played in extremely testing wind and had to compete in a play-off against ’s Fredrick From to determine the winning professional.

As an amateur he played an important role in the England Boy’s team and captained the Yorkshire team to victory in the English County Boys Championship in 2012.

Nick was a quarter finalist at the British Amateur in 2013 and also managed to reach the last 16 of the English Amateur that year too. In 2014 he was crowned both the English Amateur Champion and Midland Open Amateur Champion as well. His early professional career on the Gecko Tour has seen him compete in four events. The SportsAid Cymru Society plays around 16 tournaments between April and October on many of the best courses around Wales. Its membership ranges from current and retired businesspeople to personalities from the worlds of sport and entertainment. Golfers always have a table or two at SACW’s famous pre-international lunches at the Park Plaza, Cardiff. Since its formation, the charity, headed by former sprinter Ron Jones MBE, captain of Britain’s Olympic team in Mexico in 1968, has distributed more than £1.2 million to talented young sports people in 40 different sports to help them go on to represent Wales and GB with distinction. Alumni include some who reached the very top, such as Colin Jackson, Nicole Cooke, Hannah Mills, Geraint Thomas and David Roberts.
