We launched the world’s first computer games degree in 1997. We launched the world’s first ethical hacking degree in 2006. We’re the only university in Scotland to offer a range of accelerated, three-year degrees. And our goal has always been to bridge the gap between university and industry, allowing you to enter a modern jobs market with confidence. We’re enormously proud of our first 25 years as a university, but our city centre campus has been home to an educational institution for well over a century. When the maritime industry was big business in the city – around 100 years ago – a replica of a ship’s bridge was built on the roof of the building. With uninterrupted views of the skies over the River Tay and the North Sea beyond, this replica offered the perfect ‘classroom’ for would-be seafarers to learn how to navigate using the stars. This practical, hands-on approach remains fundamental to what we do at Abertay. Our contemporary, ever-evolving degrees have strong links with industry. So whether it’s work placements, guest lectures or networking events, you’ll be in contact with potential employers from the start. Having your own space can be a great experience, and living in university accommodation gives you the comfort of knowing you are in a safe, well maintained environment. You are also in the perfect place to make friends for life and have great fun. We have approximately 540 bed spaces across three locations, all of which are a short walk from campus and the city centre. There are a range of room types - including bedsits, shared and single rooms and multi-occupancy flats - so you can be confident you’ll find something which suits your needs. They are great value, and utility bills, internet access and contents insurance are al included in the bill. Head to our website for up-to-date rent prices. Our accommodation is self-catered and provides a mix of en-suite and shared bathroom facilities. In consequence, a number of major in-town shopping malls were developed in the UK. The first of these was the Oracle Centre in Reading. This paper examines the impact of the Oracle on retail activity in the town centre using land use data and the results of a retailer survey. The Oracle acted as a catalyst for change, accelerating trends already observed in the centre, shifting the prime pitch, weakening peripheral areas and increasing turnover rates. The added attraction of the town centre offset many of the trade diversion impacts. However, some adverse effects may have been masked by strong consumer spending and a vibrant local economy. 1. Introduction Russell Schiller (1986) described the development of large, out-of-town regional shopping centres as the “third wave” of retail decentralisation in Britain. Prior to the 1980s, the only major shopping centre outside a town centre was Brent Cross. Planning policy however, shifted in the mid-1980s and a series of proposals for out- of-town centres appeared, coinciding with a more laissez-faire approach and a presumption in favour of development.
