The Research High-frequency words are often referred to as “sight words”, a term that usually reflects the practice of learning the words through memorization. This whole word memorisation is an ineffective method of learning words and cognitive neuroscience has now proven that all words need to be taught and learnt from part to whole, identifying a word’s sound parts and blending those together. This is called Orthographic Mapping.

Orthographic mapping (OM) involves the formation of letter-sound connections to bond the spellings, pronunciations, and meanings of specific words in memory. It explains how children learn to read all words by sight, to spell words from memory, and to acquire vocabulary words from print. This development is portrayed as a sequence of overlapping phases, each characterized by the predominant type of connection linking spellings of words to their pronunciations in memory.

Orthographic Mapping is enabled by phonemic awareness and grapheme-phoneme knowledge. Recent findings indicate that OM to support sight word reading is facilitated when beginners are taught about articulatory features of phonemes and when grapheme-phoneme relations are taught.

©2020 The Literacy Collective TLC Inclusions TLC Sight Words are presented in a six level progression and use eCode (visual emoji prompts) for initial decoding of any word parts that contain irregular spellings or difficult sounds. This gives students the ability to decode tricky words that break the regular phonic decoding. eCode Sight Word Cards Sight words are presented as cards with eCode prompts on one side and plain black text on the other side. Students use eCode for prompts for initial decoding but should quickly progress to plain text and orthographic mapping.

Sight word activities are recommended for both classroom time and homework consolidation. The full TLC Module F program schedules sight word activities during literacy rotations. Levelled lists are used for individual sight word cards for activities as well as wall charts for class resources. eCode Sight Word Homework Packs include checklist, parent instructions and cards. It is recommended that lists are sent home one list at a time (9 words) and only once they are assessed should a new list be administered. This allows students to learn at their own pace. The TLC Sight Word kit comes with parent/teacher achievement checklists used as homework tracking. Once a list has been achieved a new list and checklist is given. It is recommended that the checklists are glued into a manilla folder in a progressiveway to create a sight word flip folder (see training videos for visual understanding). Fun Activity Ideas

Sight Word Spotlight Place the words around a dark room and use torch to find the words.

Sight Words Stairs Place the words on sticky notes on the stairs. Read on the way up and down.

Tub Time Write words on rubber sheets and cut them out. Fun play in the bath.

Word Parking Lot Draw a parking lot on cardboard. Drive toy car into word parking.

Chalk Hopscotch Draw words and hopscotch on concrete. Jump saying words.

Playdough Words Make sight words using playdough.

Swat the Sight Word Lay out the words on the table. Call out a word for child to swat using a fly swat.
