INSTRUCT ANCHOR CHART [Display Reproducible page 1.] • Introduce the Concept of this lesson. (See above.) • Refer to the Anchor Chart to review the definition of a sight word. • Point to list. o Explain that list is an example of a sight word that can be sounded out. It is called a regular sight word. o Prompt students: What type of syllable is this? (closed) What is the vowel sound? (short i; /ĭ/) Read the word. (list) • Point to find. o Explain that find is an example of a sight word that can’t be sounded out. It is called an irregular sight word. Read find to students. o Discuss what is irregular about the word find (e.g., it looks like a closed syllable, but the vowel sound is not short i). • Repeat for each regular and irregular sight word. Discuss what is irregular about each word (e.g., spread looks like it should be pronounced with a long e sound, as in the word teach, but ea in this word does not have the long e sound; cold looks like a closed syllable, but the vowel . ® sound is not short o; the first syllable in something has a silent-e that makes the vowel say its name, as in the word home, but ome in this word does not have the long o sound). • Refer to the At A Glance section. Ask each student to read aloud the entire list of words. Note which words the student has difficulty reading accurately. PowerUp ® • Have students practice reading and one to three of the words that were difficult using the following steps: o Review what makes the word irregular. o Have students copy the word on a white board or sheet of paper while spelling the word out loud as they write. o Cover one or more letters and have students write the whole word again. o Have students write the word from memory (refer back to the model if necessary). • To develop automaticity, have students read aloud the full set of words in the At A Glance section. Students should practice reading both down and across the columns. You may wish to time students and give them the opportunity to beat their times. PRACTICE [Display Reproducible page 2.] Part A: Reading and Sight Words • Students read the sight words in the box and each clue to find the sight word that matches it. To practice spelling, students write each word beside the matching clue Part B: Reading Sentences • Students read the sight words in the box and underline them in the sentences. Then, students read each sentence. (Support as necessary.) Extend For extra reinforcement, try one of the following activities: • Have students create a deck of sight word cards from this lesson. Hold up a card, and have students read the word and generate an oral sentence that uses it. • Create two sets of sight word cards to play games such as Concentration, or Memory, Go Fish, and BINGO. ★ Note that an Answer Key is available for teacher reference below.
