Summer Holidays: Last Day for Students: This bumper edition of The Voice really does Friday 21st July 2017 encapsulate the wide range of opportunities and (early closure 12:50pm) activities our students have been involved in over INSED Days: Monday 24th July & the course of recent weeks and, in particular, Tuesday 25th July The Hamble School’s spirit of ‘Achieving Excellence Together’. It has AUTUMN TERM 2017 been lovely to see the students working very hard at their studies, but also having fun, learning new skills and helping others. Our aim INSED Days: Monday 4th & is to continue to build on and extend these opportunities as we move Tuesday 5th September 2017 into the summer term. Students return: Wednesday 6th September 2017 The summer term already promises to be equally action packed. INSED Day: Friday 22nd September Year 11 students are preparing for their final GCSE examinations and we have a well planned programme of ‘top up’ and ‘warm Half term: Monday 23rd October to Friday 27th October up’ sessions for them to ensure they start their exams feeling as (inclusive) confident as possible. Years 7-10 will also be preparing for their summer examinations over the coming weeks. Fortunately the summer term is not all INSED Day: Tuesday 25th July about examinations; we also have Sports Day coming up; our annual INSED Days: Monday 4th & Prize Giving at St Mary’s Stadium in July and the Year 11 Prom at Tuesday 5th September 2017 Botley Grange to look forward to, amongst many other events. INSED Day: Friday 22nd September USEFUL INFORMATION In other news, we were obviously delighted at the outcome of the Student Absence: Voicemail – recent Ofsted inspection, which highlighted the many strengths please ring on the first morning of the school. Students embraced the opportunity to come to school dressed as a character from a book, with the imaginative and creative talents of our students clearly evident. Prizes were awarded for the best dressed in each year group, as well as an overall winner across the school. Prizes included vouchers to spend online at Amazon and the overall winner won a Kindle! There was also a staff prize awarded to the Science Department, who looked fantastic dressed as characters from the Harry Potter books. SMITH AND WORLD BOOK DAY On World Book Day, we had the pleasure of meeting and working with the urban fantasy author, R.A. Smith. He has written many new and exciting novels such as Oblivion and Primal Storm, as well as several others. In the workshop, we were exposed to new writing techniques with the aim of aiding us in our creative writing and opening up our imaginations to new thoughts and ideas. Smith, we hope to have more of Georgie Burton, Faye Connel these fun and enlightening opportunities in the future. and Jasmine Pickering 4 | The Voice - Special Edition 2017 KEY STAGE THREE ENGLISH Before half-term, our Year 7 students studied the theme of Love, with a focus on how writers communicate their ideas ENGLISH through a range of texts such as; popular love songs, poems and Shakespearean sonnets. Students used their knowledge to develop their critical reading skills, by comparing how different writers portray this theme. Most recently, Year 7 have been exploring an exciting unit about Greek Myths and Legends, with a focus on ‘Do our mistakes define who we are?’ This term, students will be creating their own Greek Myths, as well as performing their tales! In Year 8, students studied ideas surrounding Nature and the Romantic Imagination, and people’s perspectives of the natural world. Students particularly enjoyed the exploration of paintings and poems about shipwrecks and the sublime; the idea that we can be both fascinated and frightened at the same time. To develop their comparison skills, students were challenged with the task of comparing William Wordsworth’s ‘Daffodils’ with Dorothy’s Wordsworth’s ‘Grasmere journals. This half-term, students will be exploring the theme of Prejudice through one of two modern plays, FACE or Noughts and Crosses, and will be writing a dramatic monologue focusing on how to create perspective, empathy and voice. World Book Day ENGLISH Department The Hamble School - Achieving Excellence Together | 5 INTERMEDIATE MATHS CHALLENGE MATHEMATICS On Thursday 2nd February, 65 students from years 9 & 10 sat the Intermediate Maths Challenge run by the UK Mathematics Trust. The problems are aimed at challenging the students to think about a more cryptic problem and approach it in a logical way.
