The Hamble School - Achieving Excellence Together | 3 AUTHOR VISIT ENGLISH R.A. SMITH AND WORLD BOOK DAY On World Book Day, we had the pleasure of meeting and working with the urban fantasy author, R.A. Smith. He has written many new and exciting novels such as Oblivion and Primal Storm, as well as several others. In the workshop, we were exposed to new writing techniques with the aim of aiding us in our creative writing and opening up our imaginations to new thoughts and ideas. We were given Author the task of constructing the opening paragraph of our own urban fantasies, in our guest’s writing style. R. A. Smith We thoroughly enjoyed this workshop and are thankful for the experience World Book day presented us with. Many thanks Article written by students: to the wonderful author R.A. 4 | The Voice - Special Edition 2017 KEY STAGE THREE ENGLISH Before half-term, our Year 7 students studied the theme of Love, with a focus on how writers communicate their ideas ENGLISH through a range of texts such as; popular love songs, poems and Shakespearean sonnets. Students used their knowledge to develop their critical reading skills, by comparing how different writers portray this theme. Most recently, Year 7 have been exploring an exciting unit about Greek Myths and Legends, with a focus on ‘Do our mistakes define who we are?’ This term, students will be creating their own Greek Myths, as well as performing their tales! In Year 8, students studied ideas surrounding Nature and the Romantic Imagination, and people’s perspectives of the natural world. Students particularly enjoyed the exploration of paintings and poems about shipwrecks and the sublime; the idea that we can be both fascinated and frightened at the same time. To develop their comparison skills, students were challenged with the task of comparing William Wordsworth’s ‘Daffodils’ with Dorothy’s Wordsworth’s ‘Grasmere journals. This half-term, students will be exploring the theme of Prejudice through one of two modern plays, FACE or Noughts and Crosses, and will be writing a dramatic monologue focusing on how to create perspective, empathy and voice.

The Hamble School - Achieving Excellence Together | 9 Extended Writing EXTENDED WRITING ACROSS THE CURRICULUM ENGLISH – 7E have been using paintings to stimulate their creative writing. They studied Van Gogh’s ‘Starry Night’ and Breughel’s ‘Landscape with the Fall of Icarus’. The following pieces are inspired by the Van Gogh painting.

When Should We Go Out at Night and Paint the Stars? I let it leak. It seeped through. I lost control. Whilst becoming a victim, the night pleaded with me; during a time in which it became a victim, the village felt guilty. I wish. Although I know the night is dark it is not as dark as that which lives inside of me. Yet fear is not what consumes me – fear consumes my paintings. Is that why they are rejected? Just like my words, rejected. As the lights in the village go out, I realise that they never really turn off, plunging us into darkness – the world has a light which remains bright. But not I, no I am separate from all of that; I would not allow myself to be a part of that. How could I, when I know that the light inside of me – if they are there – never turn on? When I paint the stars and village windows I am turning on the lights of those that do not seem to understand me. Sometimes and only sometimes, it infuriates me, leaving me with scars from the burning tears that wash away the end. The end always seems near, yet I always know that as long as I am rejected, my end becomes less clear. Emilie Mwanza 7E

Starry starry night Dear Diary… As my eye lids conquered the darkness my sight was restored. The beautiful night sky was no more; the swirling depths of the sky had twisted my confused brain. The darkness had overridden my conscience; I felt different - a gagging depression. The rage of fire and the sorrow of an unlit happiness. The moon was blazing with rage and fury. It consumed the sky. Stars that light up the sky are now swirled like the blazing ball of gas – like the sun, but not. It was too late for the sun. My confusion had increased with yet more confusion and darkness and sorrow. As I turned my dry eyes to the darkness I had a glimpse of the tree, a tree that had been green and lovely. And yet, the smooth, lush, green leaves were no more. Dark flames of rage conquered it, had pierced the barked amour that couldn’t be penetrated by the strongest beast of them all. It was really obvious that rage had filled the soul of the tree which now was no more. Our souls are dead, torn from us. The only feelings left are sorrow, rage and depression and I can only sink further into my tortured soul. Luke Chapman, 7E

10 | The Voice - Special Edition 2017 PHYSICAL EDUCATION – creative writing. Extended Writing

Badminton Observation Flick serve – The flick serve is a very useful way to disguise a short serve. You would make it look like you are going for a short serve but at the last second you would change the action to a flick of the wrist to generate more power to get the trajectory over the opponent. I have given myself 6 out of ten for the flick serve. This is because I am able to complete a flick serve but my consistency isn’t very good and I often fail when trying to get it to go past my opponent. Also I could put more disguise on the shot as the opponent can slightly tell when I am going to try a flick serve Short serve – The short serve is the default serve for doubles and is very useful when starting a rally. I have given myself 7 for the short serve as I think that it is quite an easy skill to accomplish. However my serves are sometimes not flat enough, making it easier for my opponent to return the shuttlecock. Also my aim is not as accurate as I would like it to be, the shuttlecock sometimes doesn’t reach the service line. Or I will put too much power and it will be straight at my opponent. To improve on this I would need to practise more. Smash – The smash can be a very dangerous shot when it is executed properly as it doesn’t give the opponent time to think about a good return, the best they can do is just try and return it. For the smash I gave myself 5 out of ten. This is because I am not very successful at pulling the smash off; I usually hit the shuttlecock into the net. Despite this I can usually get a good power in the smash and when it is on target it normally wins me the point as the opponent struggles to return the shuttlecock. Forehand long – The forehand long serve is a very useful tool to utilise in badminton. It is used as the default serve in singles, this means that the main serve used in singles is the forehand long, this is because it helps take advantage and control of the rally from the start as the best your opponent can do from there is return the shuttlecock well. For the forehand long I gave myself 6 out of 10. This is due to the fact that I am able to get the correct contact on the shot and it goes over my opponents head, however I cannot get the shuttlecock in the back tram lines as often as I would like. Therefore, not being that good at the skill will lead to it being easier for my opponent to return the shuttlecock. Overhead clear – The overhead clear is a very important part of the game, badminton. This is because it enables you to return the shuttlecock when it goes over your head and you need to defend. For this skill I gave myself 7 out of 10. This is because I can complete an overhead clear to a good standard and it helps me when I’m defending, however it sometimes doesn’t get enough power and results in more of a ‘drop shot’ rather than an overhead clear. To combat this I would need to practise more. Net shot – The net shot is a very technical shot, when you get it right your opponent has very little time to try and return the shot. For the net shot I have given myself 6 out of 10 as I feel that I am quite good at this skill. I can make my opponent struggle to return the shuttle cock on the occasion but most of the time I either hit the shuttle with too much or not enough power. To get better I would need to train and try net shots more often to gain more confidence. Jack Bishop, Year 10

The Hamble School - Achieving Excellence Together | 11 Extended Writing DESIGN & TECHNOLOGY – creative writing.

CAD & CAM CAD is computer aided design. CAM is computer aided design. Example of CAD is 2D design, Photoshop and google sketch up. Example of CAM is cam 1, cam 2, 3D printer, laser cutter and CNC router. The advantages of using CAD and CAM are the machine is very accurate to the design you have made. The machines are easy to operate so you can leave them over night to produce. It produces lots at one time if you want the same design to be produced. The machine can produce cheap products when making in volume. This is mass production which is where you can make lots of things at once. The machine is safer to use because there is less workers and heavy CAM to carry out the more dangerous operations. The disadvantages are if the machine was to break down the cost to repair the damage would be a lot of money. The initial start-up cost is: you need the machine and an empty room to fit the machine into. For the employees that you hire some of them need training so you have to send them on a training course which costs more money. The obsolete machine means when the machine gets old it will need updating or replacing and this costs more money. If the machine makes mistakes and mass produces the items then it may need to be remade. In conclusion, I believe that you should invest in CAD and CAM machines. Overall, I think that there are more advantages than disadvantages. You may need to replace or update the machine every so often but if you were to mass produce any product it’s worth the investment because you would earn your money back. A company should invest in a CAD and CAM because they can produce lots of products at once and leave them overnight because this will help the company produce more as some companies want to do that, but it costs lots of money to run, but you will make the money back. 12 | The Voice - Special Edition 2017 Year 7 and 8 Artwork The Art Department is committed to giving its students the opportunity to work with a broad range of media and processes in Year 7 and 8. We aim to provide students with the opportunity ART to develop a wide range of skills to ‘find their creative/ artistic talents’. We would like to celebrate some of the artistic achievements of our current Year 7 and 8 students. YEAR 7– DRY POINT ETCHING As part of the Year 7 ‘Dark and Hidden Spaces’ project, Year 7 students have the opportunity to develop ideas and skills in printmaking by making dry-point etchings. The process involves scratching ‘Burrs’ into clear plastic sheets to make a print template before inking up their templates and printing their work with a printing press. Many of our students this year have taken the opportunity to add colour using water colours to create skilful outcomes.

YEAR 8 – FAUVISM SELF PORTRAITS PROJECT In Year 8, students in the Art Department have been learning about the genre of art known as Fauvism and developing their understanding of colour theory (warm colours/ cold colours/ complementary and harmonious colour). They are currently creating designs for a Self Portrait painting in a Fauvist style, which you can see examples of below. Their designs show a very developed understanding of how colour can create mood/ atmosphere and a deep understanding of the Fauvist style.

The Hamble School - Achieving Excellence Together | 13 Art Trip: Pitt Rivers Museum

ART and Natural History Museum Year 11 students visit to Oxford’s Pitt Rivers Museum and Natural History Museum on Friday 3rd March 2017. On Friday 3rd March 2017 a group of Year 11 GCSE and BTEC Art and Design students visited Oxford’s Pitt Rivers Museum. Having started their exam project of work, the students were keen to draw inspiration from exploring the artefacts on display in these world famous museums. This year, for the GCSE exam project, students were asked to respond to a theme ‘Beginning and /or end’. BTEC students responded to a choice of assignment briefs exploring the themes ‘OP and Pop’ and ‘Classical Style’. They have 10 weeks of lessons to develop ideas for a final piece that they create in a 10 hour (two day) exam in May. The day started at 8:20pm when the staff and students met the minibuses at the school. After a two hour road trip we arrived in Oxford. For the first part of the visit students explored The Pitt Rivers museum. The museum’s staff provided an introduction to the museum providing a helpful insight into the unusual way in which it exhibits. Students used their sketchbooks and cameras to record their observations focusing on the topic or theme they had chosen to explore for their exam project. The trip party ventured into Oxford’s centre for lunch walking past its famous university and historic buildings. After a quick lunch, students and staff returned to the museum and explored the Natural History Museum adjacent to the Pitt Rivers Museum. We look forward to seeing how our students will interpret the exam theme and to exhibiting their work in our annual art exhibition. The Art Department would also like to take this opportunity to invite parents, carers and members of our school community to this exciting exhibition.

The Hamble School - Achieving Excellence Together | 37 YEAR 7 FOOTBALL TEAM Since January the boys have worked very hard on improving every aspect of their game. In training we look to improve the boys general understanding of the game as well improving individual skills such as passing, control, finishing and general

PE fitness. As well as this, we look at the boys social skills and how they work together as team as we feel this can benefit performance within the sport and across the school. Mr Slack and Mr Griggs are very impressed with the commitment and progress the boys have made this term. So far we have played one fixture as a group with an emphatic 1-0 win over a very big and strong Regents Park. The boys effort and commitment was fantastic in keeping a clean sheet as they worked well as a team to deny their opponents on numerous occasions. The attacking play was fantastic to watch at times, with some great football played. This attacking flair led to our goal, with some great passing and moving which allowed Lloyd Marande time and space to slot the ball home superbly. It was a great team performance which we hope to take into our next fixture with Oasis Lordshill on the 15/03/17. YEAR 7 & 8 RUGBY The Year 7 and 8 Rugby players have been busy preparing for the upcoming festivals with the expert help of Marcus Coffin. Students learn a variety of skills in a relaxed and professional environment with the sole aim of having fun. The boys played in a festival back in October (the first experience of Rugby for most of the students) and have been motivated to develop and progress over the winter months, come rain or shine! A huge thank you to Marcus who has given up his own time in order to coach the lads. U14 GIRLS BASKETBALL The U14 Girls Basketball team are an incredibly talented group of players.
