4 www.urban-family.com Shanghai Women Favor C-sections

The Chinese government wants more women to undergo natural child- birth, but many mothers-to-be still prefer caesarean sections according to new figures. In 2013, 50.7 percent of pregnant women had c-sections according to Shanghai health officials. It's actually the lowest figure in the last decade but still remains higher than the 15 percent ratio recommended by the World Health Organization. A midwife who has been working for eight years at the Obstetrics and Gynecology Hospital of delivering babies without sur- gery said she understands the pain factor but she thinks women don’t always understand the risks of caesareans.

Oh Baby!

In May volunteers in Nanchang, Jiangxi Province underwent simulated labor contractions to experience the pain of childbirth. The men, including Iain Inglis, a foreign performer of propaganda songs who rose to fame after he took part in China's Red Song Competition in 2010, were strapped up to a machine and given simulated contractions as part of celebrations for International Mother's Day. Most people just bought flowers.

Tony Jaccaci believes things are changing in Thames Town: “Yes, it used to be a ghost town, but it is actually really picking up, especially on the weekends, and can be a fun place to visit.”

With two hotels, the Liston and Finity, more restaurants, tea houses and shops, Jaccaci recommends a visit and shares some of his favorite things to do in Thames Town.

“Creativity takes courage.” – Henri Matisse As part of the Urban Family arts-themed issue, we made an open call for student artwork submissions from the Shanghai international school community for a judged competition. We were overwhelmed by the response. We received 110 works from seven different schools and the work was impressive. Monika Lin, creator of Colorbox Arts, was our judge and after much deliberation and observation chose these works as the “Best in Show.” Thank you to Monika Lin and all of the students and schools who participated. Upon entering the inaugural exhi- bition Myth/History, you’ll be greeted by Maurizio Cattelan’s ‘Tree of Life’. In the main open area, children might enjoy the large twisted airplane, as well as the installation of water that sprays from a wild hose contained in a cube. Power Station of Art This state-run contemporary art museum is home to multiple exhibits. Floor after floor there is more than enough to take in. And with popular exhibits like last year’s Andy Warhol collection and most recently French artist JR with his mobile photo truck, families will enjoy this space.

A bit out of the way, the Power Station of Art can be hard to find, but the smoke stack from this former power station now display- ing a digital thermometer is like a beacon in this less-populated area of Shanghai along the river.

A café and small kid’s workshop area near the entrance also make this an easily accessible space for families.

Founded by Chinese collectors, Liu Yiqian and his wife, Wang Wei, the Long Museum is among Shanghai’s first sites to display formerly unseen, private collections of artists.

The location’s collection covers 1000 years of art displaying antiquities, Communist and contempo- rary works.

Brunch and Bunnies East er at the Garden Party

wesome Kid’s Club and the InterContinental Shanghai Expo celebrated Easter with a festive garden party on April 20. Excited kids marked the end of a rainy week by putting on their detective hats and searching the grassy lawns and gardens Aas part of a giant egg hunt. They also took part in fun activities like tug-o-war, egg and spoon races and egg tosses that left kids with smiles as large as the bunny faces they painted over brunch.

Parents had a good time stuffing themselves over a lavish lunch while helping the little ones with Easter favorites like egg painting and chocolate bunny decorations. Even babies and toddlers got into the action, playing with toys on soft mats laid out on the grass lawn and, of course, playing in the Urban Family jumping castle. Some lucky families may have left with cash and other prizes awarded at the Raffle and Rowe car trivia quiz, but everyone was a winner at this festive Easter celebration.

A big thank you to all of the sponsors for making this Easter one that families in Shanghai will never forget!
