THE NEW SHANGHAI ART STREET: YONGKANG LU – CNN TRAVEL HTTP://TRAVEL.CNN.COM/SHANGHAI/PLAY/NEW-SHANGHAI-ART-STREET- YONGKANG-LU-977908 THE NEW SHANGHAI ART STREET: YONGKANG LU Moganshan Lu? Been there, seen that. The new vegetable market-turned-art street to check out is Yongkang Lu By Hunter Braithwaite ??? Image not found or type unknown Alexis Kouzmine-Karavaïeff, ifa gallery director Yongkang Lu is a stronghold of old Shanghai, a grimy love letter to how things once were, replete with underwear dangling like prayer flags. It is also the home of several galleries recently opened by Zane Mellupe, a Latvian artist and curator. The Yongkang Lu art project strives for interaction between the arts community and the locals, and, unlike so many other creative initiatives in Shanghai, this one actually seems to be working. Zane Mellupe, ??? Image not found or type unknown Zane Mellupe, Latvian artist and curator “I wanted something new. Art is accessible to so few people [in Shanghai]. I thought about creating a residency space for foreign and upcoming Shanghai artists and to give a chance to the minorities,” says Mellupe, the former creative director of island6, of how her Yongkang Lu project began. So she began talking to developers on Yongkang Lu, a former vegetable market that was slated to become a fashion street. “Instead of one space I decided that I should get more. The developers trusted me. I just had No. 83 in the beginning though; the landlord said I could use it for one month. Now it’s a coffee shop.” As the galleries opened one after another, the neighborhood began to feel different.

  • Siam's Old Singapore Ties
Siam’s Old Singapore Ties Vitthya Vejjajiva Introduction This article is an abridged and edited version of a longer article that was prepared for a commemorative publication for the inauguration of the new premises of the Thai Embassy in Singapore.1 It is by no means meant as an academic article— indeed, although I use the word “old”, I am referring to the ties, not Singapore itself, which has had certain “connections” with Siam under King Ramkhamhaeng and down the ages—but has been prepared as a “reminder” of Singapore’s continuous and close association with the kings and people of Siam for well over a century. It was thus envisioned as a non-scholarly and basically descriptive article. That said, I hope to remind readers that the advent of “old” Singapore, dating from 1819, proved to be a momentous event for Siam, for it had the effect of changing the traditional pattern of Siam’s trade, henceforth to be characterized by the fast-growing junk trade between Chinese merchants in Siam and their counterparts in Singapore. I. First contact The first Siamese-Singapore direct contact occurred in April 1821, barely two years after the founding of Singapore by Sir Stamford Raffles. A mission led by John Morgan, an English merchant resident in Singapore, was entrusted with a letter addressed to the King of Siam, in which Colonel William Farquhar, Resident of Singapore, informed the King of the “new Establishment the British Government has formed here” and expressed the hope for future commercial ties.2 The emissary was generally well received in Bangkok.

The theme « animal » in the artistic disciplines testifies of the long relationship between human and animal. From the biblical symbolism of God and Evil in medieval era, animal representation quickly became a tool of society’s criticism, as it is in the painting « The Garden of Earthly Delights » where Jerome Bosch paints imaginary and hybrid creatures with irony to destabilise religious myths; or in George Orwell’s novel where the author makes an allegorical satire of the Soviet Union. For the occasion of the exhibition “Animal Farm”, ifa gallery has selected a series of works whose animal figure is present from artists represented by the gallery. Xu Zhe works with different mediums including sculpture, photography, video and installations. Strongly inspired by George Orwell’s Animal Farm, the artist depicts a reality that can be perceived as quite sinister and threatening and that suggests a violent society that has lost control. Zane Mellupe uses different types of mediums : from photography to drawing, from installation to video, from sculpture to performance.

To facilitate understanding by all Members, who may speak in English, Mandarin, Malay or Tamil, simultaneous interpretation is provided, and the device attached by the side, allows them to listen to the proceedings in any one of the above languages. The round plates on the back of the seats used to be the speakers. The castle-like design on them is part of the Colonial crest used when Singapore was a British Colony. The Chamber is now popularly used for recitals, concerts, conferences, fashion shows. Gallery The Gallery, in true Tuscan architecture, features high ceilings held up by tall columns and enriched by simple trimmings in its cornices. In November 2015, when Tao Hongjing was opening his new exhibition in Beijing, international press including the Beijing Morning, The New York Times and L’Express, were reporting on an extraordinary intrigue. The talented artist Tao Hongjing, an upcoming figure in the Chinese contemporary market over the past ten years, was none other than French artist Alexandre Ouairy. The conceptual artist had developed a split personality, an artistic performance allowing him to work beyond his own limits. In the words of the Goncourt prize-winner Romain Gary, alias Émile Ajar, “The habit of only being oneself ends up completely depriving us of the rest of the world, of all other beings; “I” is the end of possibilities.” 1 ifa gallery takes up the challenge of organising the debut double exhibition: both posthumously of artist Tao Hongjing, a borrowed identity definitively put to rest, and of contemporary works from artist Alexandre Ouairy. Born in Nantes, graduate of the National Superior Art School of Grenoble, Alexandre Ouairy has been living in Shanghai since the 2000s. At this period, contemporary Chinese artists were much sought-after both in China and internationally. Even if his work aroused the interest of local galleries and exhibition curators, such was not the case for collectors, at this time wishing to invest mainly in Chinese artworks, the “hot investment” of the moment.
