Goals of the presentation

 To investigate commercial galleries of ,  analyze and compare the different types of them,  in order to know what roles commercial galleries play in the art scene/world (the so-called “art ecology”)

Definition of commercial gallery (I) Nature  privately owned art institutions which aim at making profit, as professionally run businesses.

Sources of profit  derived from selling artworks, holding exhibitions and commercial art fairs, selling books and souvenirs, and opening online stores.

Artworks retailing  As a kind of retailing business, selling artworks is their focus.  They seriously select artworks for sale based on the who created them, in order to enhance the gallery’s reputation.

Definition of commercial gallery (II)

Sources of artworks  In order to control output of artworks, they are from either contracted artists or the artists engaged in projects with the gallery.

How to make profit  If the artworks’ sale is good, the gallery will make a profit and the will be paid.  some regular customers to promote the business.

Art market  So there is a competitive market among commercial galleries in order to be famous in the world (being internationalized).

Reasons why we choose these galleries (I)  investigate the current operating situation of commercial galleries in Hong Kong: whether the development orientation is unitary or diversified, local or international.

 look at three galleries with distinct features, in order to be easy for doing comparison.  With different scale (size), location, target, style  With different ways of operation and sale  With different relationship between artists and galleries
