The Arts House Is Managed by Arts House Limited About the Arts House The Arts House is managed by Arts House Limited about The Arts House Occupying the almost 200-year-old building that was Singapore’s first Parliament House, The Arts House has played an active role in the Singapore arts and creative scene. The House promotes and presents multidisciplinary programmes and festivals such as literary arts, film, performing and visual arts. The Arts House is run and managed by Arts House Limited (AHL). AHL also presents the Singapore International Festival of Arts, and manages Goodman Arts Centre and Aliwal Arts Centre. Chamber The Chamber is the most historically significant space in The Arts House, in fact, the heart of the House. Formerly the Parliamentary Chamber where Members of the Singapore Parliament gathered, the Chamber also had special furniture shipped in from London, and the upholstery used is the original that was in place since 1954. To facilitate understanding by all Members, who may speak in English, Mandarin, Malay or Tamil, simultaneous interpretation is provided, and the device attached by the side, allows them to listen to the proceedings in any one of the above languages. The round plates on the back of the seats used to be the speakers. The castle-like design on them is part of the Colonial crest used when Singapore was a British Colony. The Chamber is now popularly used for recitals, concerts, conferences, fashion shows. Gallery The Gallery, in true Tuscan architecture, features high ceilings held up by tall columns and enriched by simple trimmings in its cornices. This open visual arts space is the perfect venue for exhibitions, talks, corporate receptions and product launches. The Gallery used to be part of the Legislative Assembly Library and later, from 1980, it became the Committee Room where meetings of the select committee were held. Important Bills like the Copyright Bill, the Maintenance of Religious Harmony Bill, the Parents Bill and many others were once deliberated here. Blue Room Originally blue, the room keeps its moniker as a reminder of its rich history. The former Commonwealth Parliamentary Association Room was used as a lounge for Members of Parliament to eat, drink and discuss issues in a more relaxed manner in between debate sessions. In the 1950s, the adjoining Old Select Committee Room, now called the VIP Room, was the venue of a secret meeting between then Prime Minister Lee Kuan Yew and the underground Communist chief, Fong Chong Pik aka ‘The Plen’ (for plenipotentiary). This was also where Mr Lee discussed strategies with his Old Guard ministers to take on the opposition Barisan Socialis in debate. The room is now a versatile space used both for performances and corporate functions, including press conferences, product launches and receptions. Living Room The Living Room was where the nerve centre of the Parliament House used to be. From 1955 to 1959, this room was the general office of the Old Parliament House, in which administrators coordinated papers and reports for Parliamentary sessions. Later in 1959, after the formation of the government, the room was used for meetings of the People’s Action Party. Now a multi-purpose room, the Living Room is suitable for seminars, receptions, book launches, workshops as well as rehearsal spaces. Play Den The Play Den is an intimate and unique space that has been converted into a state-of-the-art Black Box theatre that is fully equipped with lighting and sound systems, and retractable seats that enhance the versatility of the space. This room was where the first court cases in Singapore were heard. In the 1950s, it served as the General Office for Singapore’s first Chief Minister, Mr. David Marshall. The room comprised a general office and two other rooms – Mr. Marshall’s private office, and that of his secretary’s. This room was used as a library in subsequent years. Screening Room Experience the magic of the silver screen in this 75-seater film theatrette, which used to house several offices during the Legislative Assembly and Parliamentary years in the late 20th century. It is now a dedicated space for movie lovers as we feature our film series like But Is The Book Better? and SFS Talkies @ The Arts House, as well as film festivals, including the Singapore Chinese Film Festival and Big Eyes, Big Minds: Singapore International Children’s Film Festival. Away from the humdrum of the office, this versatile and intimate space is a perfect setting for corporate functions such as media briefings and presentations, or a great way to treat your friends to a private film screening! venue rates Chamber Mon – Thur Fri – Sun 9am - 4pm $2,000 $3,000 4pm - 10pm $2,400 $3,600 Blue Room & adjoining VIP Room Mon – Thur Fri – Sun 9am - 4pm $1,600 $2,400 4pm - 10pm $1,900 $2,900 Gallery II Mon – Thur Fri – Sun 9am - 4pm $1,500 $2,300 4pm - 10pm $1,800 $2,800 Living Room Mon – Thur Fri – Sun 9am - 4pm $1,200 $1,800 4pm - 10pm $1,400 $2,200 Play Den Mon – Thur Fri – Sun 9am - 4pm $1,400 $2,100 4pm - 10pm $1,700 $2,500 Screening Room Mon – Thur Fri – Sun 9am - 4pm $800 $1,150 4pm - 10pm $1,150 $1,800 4 hour block Morning Rates (9am - 4pm) 4 hour block Evening Rates (4pm - 10pm) Surcharge per hour (before 9am and after 10pm) @ 150% of full rate per hr across all venues equipment charges The Promoter shall bear the charges for items rented from AHL as per stated below. furniture 1 Banquet Chairs (colour hammer tone copper c/w maroon fabric) $3 2 Banquet Chair Covers in cream colour $3 3 IBM tables-1.5ft x 6ft c/w blue table cloth & skirting $15 4 Oblong tables-2.5ft x 6ft c/w dark blue skirting $20 5 Round Tables Diameter-5ft c/w white table cloth $30 6 Rostrum $70 7 Wooden Easels (various sizes) TBA display 8 Movable White Panel (4ft x 8 ft; 1.2m x 2.4m) $50 9 Long White Panel (4ft x 115”) (For Gallery only) $20 light 10 Spotlight 50W (For Gallery) $20 projection 11 Projector 2500 Lumens XGA $400 12 Portable tripod Screen Size 84” x 84” (7” x 7”) $120 Sound 13 Yamaha Upright Piano - Moving & Tuning $300 14 Kawaii Baby Grand Piano (5ft 6inch – 442HZ) $200 15 Piano Baby Grand - moving (2-way)** $700 on weekdays and during office hours, before 5pm 16 Piano Baby Grand - moving (2-way)** $1000 on weekend or after 5pm on weekdays 17 Piano Baby Grand - moving (2-way)** TBA Last minute request (within 2 working days before event) 18 Piano Baby Grand - tuning at 442 hz (together with shifting of piano) +$70 19 Piano Baby Grand/Upright Piano - tuning at 442 hz (if tuning only) $100 20 Handheld dynamic microphone c/w 10m XLR 3-pin receptacle cable $20 21 Wired microphone $20 22 Lapel microphone $50 23 Headset $50 24 Direct Input Box (DI Box) $20 25 Basic Sound System with 2 Handheld microphones $450 **Applicable to venues outside Living Room capacity Room Theatre Banquet Cocktail Chamber 200 Blue Room & VIP lounge 90 80 120 Gallery I 150 Gallery II 120 100 130 Screening Room 75 Living Room 80 60 80 Play Den (theatre) 120 Council Room 35 30 recommended caterers Viet Lang Timbré Ady Mohd Nor / Winnie Goh Damien Ong T 6336 7618 T 6336 7739 M 9856 3781 / 9631 9180 M 9180 4548 E [email protected] E [email protected] Olivia Cassivelaun Fancourt (OCF) Stamford Catering Services (Halal) Jackson Lim Antho Ang T 6333 9312 T 6852 3333 M 9009 6960 M 9278 8910 E [email protected] E [email protected] Orange Clove (Halal) Rasel Catering Singapore (Halal) Jerine Soh Joanne Ng Assistant Sales Manager T 6777 7183 Orange Clove Catering M 8726 2533 T 6833 7957 E [email protected] M 9726 7768 E [email protected] Overjoy Restaurant and Catering (Indian Halal) T 6291 1144 / 6286 4477 E [email protected] about Arts House Limited Arts House Limited (AHL) is a not-for-profit organisation committed to enriching lives through the arts. • Siam's Old Singapore Ties
Siam’s Old Singapore Ties Vitthya Vejjajiva Introduction This article is an abridged and edited version of a longer article that was prepared for a commemorative publication for the inauguration of the new premises of the Thai Embassy in Singapore.1 It is by no means meant as an academic article— indeed, although I use the word “old”, I am referring to the ties, not Singapore itself, which has had certain “connections” with Siam under King Ramkhamhaeng and down the ages—but has been prepared as a “reminder” of Singapore’s continuous and close association with the kings and people of Siam for well over a century. It was thus envisioned as a non-scholarly and basically descriptive article. That said, I hope to remind readers that the advent of “old” Singapore, dating from 1819, proved to be a momentous event for Siam, for it had the effect of changing the traditional pattern of Siam’s trade, henceforth to be characterized by the fast-growing junk trade between Chinese merchants in Siam and their counterparts in Singapore. I. First contact The first Siamese-Singapore direct contact occurred in April 1821, barely two years after the founding of Singapore by Sir Stamford Raffles. A mission led by John Morgan, an English merchant resident in Singapore, was entrusted with a letter addressed to the King of Siam, in which Colonel William Farquhar, Resident of Singapore, informed the King of the “new Establishment the British Government has formed here” and expressed the hope for future commercial ties.2 The emissary was generally well received in Bangkok.
