Class History

In the fall of the year nineteen hundred and forty-three, twelve long years ago, a group of children entered New London School for the first time. Most all of the children entered school with one ambition, to enter high school and eventually, become seniors.

The years passed, and at last the day arrived when we entered high school as green freshmen. We entered the ninth grade with forty-two members. Our class officers for our freshman year were: Benny Furr, president; Lynn Eury, vice-president; and Alene Chandler, secretary. Mr. L. A. Price was our class advisor.

At the end of our freshman year we had lost five members of our class: Charles James, Howard Carter, Don Pennington, Dwight Carter, and Bobby Poplin. We were glad to welcome two new students to our class, Reece Whitley and Harold Bush. In the year nineteen hundred and fifty-two we entered the tenth grade as Sophomores. Our class officers were. Glenn Eudy, president; Benny Furr, vice-president; and Clarene Brewer, secretary. Mr. Hugh Giles was our class advisor.

During our Sophomore year we lost seven members of our class: Delilah Burleson, Kenneth Barnes, Jeanie Fesperman, Wade Carter, Lee Roy Plowman, Larry McSwain, and Jerry Mauldin.

In the year nineteen hundred and fifty-three we entered the eleventh grade as Juniors. Our class officers for this year were: Lynn Eury, president; Tommy Miller, vice-president; Mary Ben Harris, secretary; and Benny Furr, treasurer.

Coming to our class this year was Johnsie Greene and Howard Pickler. Students lost by our class during this year were: Polly Hahn, Wayne Smith, and Carl Whitley. Carolyn Purser and Clarene Brewer completed the eleventh grade but didn't return with us to the twelfth grade. Two of the highlights of this year were: the Junior-Senior Banquet and the Junior Play, Hillbilly Weddin,' which was directed by our class advisor, Mrs. Katheryne Mauldin.

In recognition of high achievement, outstanding qualities of leadership and notable character, sixteen members of our Junior Class were inducted into the National Beta Club.

In nineteen hundred and fifty-four we entered school. Seniors at last. We entered our senior year with thirty members. Our class officers were: Evelyn Talbert, president; Alma Treece, vice-president; Ruth Barringer, secretary; Benny Furr, treasurer. Some of the highlights of our senior year were the receiving of our class rings, the presentation of our Senior one-act plays, "Twelve O'clock Murder," "The Farmer's Daughter," and "The Happy Journey" under the direction of our class advisor, Mrs. Grover Rogers, and the publication of the annual yearbook, THE LONDONER.

The helpful influence of the faculty and students of New London School will be remembered by us, the class of 1955, forever.

We. the graduating class of New London High School of 1955, realizing that the close of our school days is near at hand, think it wise to leave something to those who in the future will undertake to fill our places.

In the course of our high school days, naturally, we would like to dispose of all our other characteristics, habits, beloved possessions, and worldly goods as follows:

Section I. To Mr. Turner and the faculty, we leave a sincere appreciation for their interest and willingness to help each student.

Section II. To Mr. Basinger we leave our gratitude for keeping our school and school grounds clean.

Section III. To the Junior Class of 1955, we leave our position as digni- fied Seniors. We hope that your Senior year will be as wonderful as ours.

Section IV. To our advisor, Mrs. Rogers, we leave our grateful appreciation for friendship and understanding through our high school years.

I, Howard Pickler, leave my ability to come in late to anyone who can get by with it.

Testator, Dolly Turner Prophecy

As I was walking down a long, dusiy road one late autum afternoon, I was thinking of my classmates, wondering what each would be doing ten or twelve years from now; when, to my surprise, a hot-rod honked its

horn. The driver stepped on the brakes and asked if I would like to take

a ride. Of course, I said yes. He asked where to. So I said into the future ten or twelve years to see what my classmates will be doing.

With that we were off. We turned off the dusty road and went by "Bush Grocery" owned by Harold Bush with Tommy Miller as assistant manager.

Leaving the grocery store, we entered the residential section where the

new high school was situated . Here we found Shelva PickJ.er teaching French, Billy Smith as agriculture teacher, and Merle Palmer, home eco- nomics teacher. The coaches of this school were Thomas Harris for the boys' team and Johnsie Greene as girls' coach.

Dolly Turner is married and a neighbor to Daisy Morton, also married.

Betty Lou Holt and Horace Mabry are models for the "Donnie Cloth- ing Shop" owned by Don Burleson. Thomas Pickler is head clothing stylist.

As head chemist with a large chemical concern, Mary Ben Harris is busy, but happy, with her test tubes.

Benny Furr is a lawyer and has Alene Chandler as his secretary.

Glenn Eudy has a little hospital near the outskirts of town with Ramelle Pickler and Patsy Thomas as his head nurses.

Lynn Eury is owner of the local paper with Evelyn Talbert and Anne Pinion as chief columists.

Ruth Barringer is owner of 5-10-25c store with Alma Treece as assistant manager, and efficient office girls, Billie Ann Ferrell and Tempie Lefler.

Reece Whitley and Howard Pickler are partners in a used car lot. Gene Mahathey has a large airport on the outskirts of town.

Jo Ann Herlocker is very happy, for in her orphanage are twenty-five children which she loves dearly.

About ten miles from all this was a large building with a sign bearing the name "Rogers Rest Home." To my amazement it was owned by Mrs. Martha Rogers, but who wouldn't need a rest after teaching us? Prophet Alma Treece

Girls' Basketball Team

Six new girls start out for the 1954-55 year with a new coach, Joe Kelly. Reba Crisco, Neva Jo Shaw, and Johnsie Greene at the offen- sive with Evelyn Huneycutt, Norma Sue Lowder, and Betty Holt at the defensive. Expected to see a lot of action are Helen Palmer and Faye Mclntyre, guards, and Katherine Griffin and Janie Pence as forwards. The first six are rotated each game as co-captains. Boys' Basketball Team

Going into the 1954-55 basketball season, the New London boys basketball season, the New London boys basketball team, with 5 returning letter- men, should have a well rounded team.

Although having a count of 3 wins out of 5 games, they have the ability and winning spirit to supply their opponents with very rugged competition throughout every game. Under the leadership of coach Kelly, the boys are showing the brand of basketball to be proud of.

Only two seniors, Thomas Harris and Harold Bush are leaving this year, with seven freshmen trying out for the team. In the short years to come, we are sure the New London boys will receive many high honors. Cheerleaders
