Dr. Kelley’nin bek lenmedik gece ziyaretlerinden korkuya kapılırlardı. Merdivenden inerken çıkardığı gıcırtı sesini duyduklarında birbirlerine sarılmak için birkaç saniyeleri olurdu; çünkü doktorun nasıl bir ruh halinde olacağı belli olmazdı. Son tartışma, mutfakta başladı. Dr. Kelley ve Dukie kavga et tiklerinde, kadın sık sık çantasını toplar ve günü dışarıda geçirirdi. Bu defa Dr. Kelley mutfaktan bağırarak

  • A Historiography of World War II Era Propaganda Films
Essays in History Volume 51 (2018) A Just Estimate of a Lie: A Historiography of World War II Era Propaganda Films Christopher Maiytt Western Michigan University Introduction Heroes and monsters have reared their heads on celluloid in every corner of the globe, either to conquer and corrupt or to defend wholesome peace. Others grasp at a future they believe they have been denied. Such were the tales of World War II-era propaganda flms and since their release, they have been at turns examined, defended, and vilifed by American and British historians. Racism, sentiments of isolationism, political and social context, and developments in historical schools of thought have worked to alter historical interpretations of this subject matter. Four periods of historical study: 1960s postwar Orthodox reactions to the violence and tension of the war-period, the revisionist works of 1970s social historians, 1990s Postmodernism, and recent historical scholarship focused on popular culture and memory- have all provided signifcant input on WWII-era propaganda flm studies. Each was affected by previous historical ideologies and concurrent events to shape their fnal products. Economic history, lef-leaning liberal ideology, cultural discourse, and women’s studies have also added additional insight into the scholarly interpretations of these flms. Tere is no decisive historiography of WWII propaganda studies and there is even less organized work on the historical value of propaganda flms. My research is intended as a humble effort to examine the most prolifc period of global propaganda flm production and how the academic world has remembered, revered, and reviled it since. Tis historiographical work is not intended to be an exhaustive review of every flm or scholarly insight offered on the subject.

THE NAZI BLOOD PURGE OF 1934 APPRCWBD": \r H M^jor Professor 7 lOLi Minor Professor •n p-Kairman of the DeparCTieflat. of History / cr^LtxJ~<2^ Dean oiTKe Graduate School IV Burkholder, Vaughn, The Nazi Blood Purge of 1934. Master of Arts, History, August, 1972, 147 pp., appendix, bibliography, 160 titles. This thesis deals with the problem of determining the reasons behind the purge conducted by various high officials in the Nazi regime on June 30-July 2, 1934. Adolf Hitler, Hermann Goring, SS leader Heinrich Himmler, and others used the purge to eliminate a sizable and influential segment of the SA leadership, under the pretext that this group was planning a coup against the Hitler regime. Also eliminated during the purge were sundry political opponents and personal rivals. Therefore, to explain Hitler's actions, one must determine whether or not there was a planned putsch against him at that time. Although party and official government documents relating to the purge were ordered destroyed by Hermann GcTring, certain materials in this category were used. Especially helpful were the Nuremberg trial records; Documents on British Foreign Policy, 1919-1939; Documents on German Foreign Policy, 1918-1945; and Foreign Relations of the United States, Diplomatic Papers, 1934. Also, first-hand accounts, contem- porary reports and essays, and analytical reports of a /1J-14 secondary nature were used in researching this topic. Many memoirs, written by people in a position to observe these events, were used as well as the reports of the American, British, and French ambassadors in the German capital.

HOUSTON A THESIS SUBMITTED IN PARTIAL FULFILLMENT OF THE REQUIREMENTS FOR THE DEGREE OF MASTER OF ARTS Thesis Director's signature: Houston, Texas June, 1966 Abstract ERNST KALTENBRUNNER. AT 'THE SUMMIT; ; A STUDY- OF THE LAST CHIEF OF THE SECURITY POLICE AND SECURITY SERVK W. R. Houston This thesis is a study of SS-ObergruppenfUhrer Dr. Ernst Kaltenbrunner, who, from January 30, 19^3> to May 8, 19^5, served as chief of the Security Police and Security Service of National Social¬ ist Germany. This post was one of the highest in the Nazi repressive machinery and one of the most important in the Reich as a whole. The first chapter of this study is devoted to Kaltenbrunner1s life from the time of his birth on October 3> 1903> until his ap¬ pointment as chief of the Security Police on January 30, 19^3* During this forty year period Kaltenbrunner, the son of a bourgeois lawyer, rose from law student to higher SS and police leader in Vienna. It was during these four decades that the interaction of the collapse of the Habsburg monarchy, the impoverishment of his parents, the tumult of the twenties, the depression, and other factors molded his character. During these years he first displayed the "bully-slave" nature which was later to become the dominant ele¬ ment in his character. It was also during the later years of this period that he joined the National Socialist Party and the SS.

Dictating the Holocaust: Female administrators of the Third Reich Rachel Century PhD Candidate 2012 Department of History Royal Holloway, University of London Page 1 Declaration of Authorship I hereby declare that this thesis and the work presented in it is entirely my own. Where I have consulted the work of others, this is always clearly stated. Rachel Century Signed: Date: Page 2 Abstract This thesis investigates the background, activities, and motivations of German women who provided administrative support for Nazi institutions and agencies of the Third Reich. It compares women who specifically chose to serve the Nazi cause in voluntary roles with those who took on such work as a progression of established careers. Using a variety of sources, including post-war testimony in criminal cases, it shows how much they knew about the repressive and genocidal aspects of the regime and evaluates the role that ideology, as against other factors, played in their loyalty to their employers. Secretaries, SS-Helferinnen (SS female auxiliaries) and Nachrichtenhelferinnen des Heeres (female communication auxiliaries of the army) held similar jobs: taking dictation, answering telephones, and sending telegrams. Yet their backgrounds differed markedly. While secretaries were habitually recruited on the basis of their prior experience and competencies, the Helferinnen predominantly volunteered, sometimes motivated by ideology and the opportunity to serve their country, sometimes enticed by the prospect of foreign travel or the lure of the uniform. The thesis sheds light on these women’s backgrounds: their social status, education, career patterns. It seeks to explain the situations and motives that propelled them into their positions and explores what they knew about the true nature of their work.
