Bibliographical Essay Below is a working bibliography of the most important books and artides that have been particularly useful to the editors and that complement the essays contained in the volume. Since we focused on the structural, i. e., economic, dass, and power dimensions that largely led to the collapse of the Weimar Republic and the successful ascension to power of the Nazi party, most of the items listed reßect that ap- proach. Although not exhaustive, this list indudes some of the most significant works in the field and those which have shaped our thinking. • The German-American Bund: Fifth Column Or
-41 THE GERMAN-AMERICAN BUND: FIFTH COLUMN OR DEUTSCHTUM? THESIS Presented to the Graduate Council of the North Texas State University in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements For the Degree of MASTER OF ARTS By James E. Geels, B. A. Denton, Texas August, 1975 Geels, James E., The German-American Bund: Fifth Column or Deutschtum? Master of Arts (History), August, 1975, 183 pp., bibliography, 140 titles. Although the German-American Bund received extensive press coverage during its existence and monographs of American politics in the 1930's refer to the Bund's activities, there has been no thorough examination of the charge that the Bund was a fifth column organization responsible to German authorities. This six-chapter study traces the Bund's history with an emphasis on determining the motivation of Bundists and the nature of the relationship between the Bund and the Third Reich. The conclusions are twofold. First, the Third Reich repeatedly discouraged the Bundists and attempted to dissociate itself from the Bund. Second, the Bund's commitment to Deutschtum through its endeavors to assist the German nation and the Third Reich contributed to American hatred of National Socialism. The nature of Germany’s past and present requires nothing less than an interdisciplinary approach to the analysis of German society and culture. Within its research and public affairs programs, the analysis of Germany’s intellectual and cultural traditions and debates has always been central to the Institute’s work. At the time the Berlin Wall was about to fall, the Institute was awarded a major grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities to help create an endowment for its humanities programs.

  • A Historiography of World War II Era Propaganda Films
Essays in History Volume 51 (2018) A Just Estimate of a Lie: A Historiography of World War II Era Propaganda Films Christopher Maiytt Western Michigan University Introduction Heroes and monsters have reared their heads on celluloid in every corner of the globe, either to conquer and corrupt or to defend wholesome peace. Others grasp at a future they believe they have been denied. Such were the tales of World War II-era propaganda flms and since their release, they have been at turns examined, defended, and vilifed by American and British historians. Racism, sentiments of isolationism, political and social context, and developments in historical schools of thought have worked to alter historical interpretations of this subject matter. Four periods of historical study: 1960s postwar Orthodox reactions to the violence and tension of the war-period, the revisionist works of 1970s social historians, 1990s Postmodernism, and recent historical scholarship focused on popular culture and memory- have all provided signifcant input on WWII-era propaganda flm studies. Each was affected by previous historical ideologies and concurrent events to shape their fnal products. Economic history, lef-leaning liberal ideology, cultural discourse, and women’s studies have also added additional insight into the scholarly interpretations of these flms. Tere is no decisive historiography of WWII propaganda studies and there is even less organized work on the historical value of propaganda flms. My research is intended as a humble effort to examine the most prolifc period of global propaganda flm production and how the academic world has remembered, revered, and reviled it since. Tis historiographical work is not intended to be an exhaustive review of every flm or scholarly insight offered on the subject.

His marriage to Maud Gonne’s daughter Iseult, contentious relationship with Yeats, and imprisonment for anti-Treaty gunrunning earned this troubled young poet attention even before his stint in WWII Berlin. His broadcasts from the Nazi capital gained him infamy, his alleged collaboration and purported anti-Semitism continued to rile critics a half-century later, and he remained to the end of his long life, as Kiely’s subtitle situates Stuart, opposed to conformity. 2 Kiely unravels what earlier studies, a short 1974 monograph by Jerry Natterstad and a basic 1990 life by Geoffrey Elborn, could not have revealed.

The Case of Pilar Primo de Rivera Summary: Recently published contributions to theories of literary criticism have revea- led the richness and distinctiveness of women’s autobiographical production, greatly advancing research by tracing apparently similar linguistic and literary phenomena which seemed to rupture the “traditional” genre of men’ autobiographical writings. But at the same time they once again simplified the complex reality which lay behind such pheno- mena by attributing them mostly to the general condition of women’s self-perception as subjects, at times losing sight of the specific historical and cultural conditions in which each process of self-representation was grounded. In the paper that follows I will examine such points of rupture and contradiction in the autobiography of Pilar Primo de Rivera, Jefe Nacional of the Feminine Section of the Spanish Falange. By locating the differing discourses of identity with which Primo de Rivera engaged, and by finding out how exactly the category of gender operated in each of them, I will try to understand the nature of such ruptures, as well as the relation betwe- en the author’s self-perceptions and her techniques of self-representation. Introduction My first encounter with the autobiography of Pilar Primo de Rivera (1983), Jefe Nacional of the Sección Femenina de la FET (henceforth SF), took place almost three years ago, when I was starting to look into the way political and gendered self-percep- tions of SF members were reflected in the rhetoric of the organization’s national leaders- hip.
