Following annual community workshops and the estab- lishment of teaching programs, the author embarked on a PhD to research historical sources and an emerging modern language based on these sources. In response to numer- ous requests for names, translations and information, together with Kaurna Elders Lewis O’Brien and Alitya Rigney, the author and others formed Kaurna Warra Pintyandi (KWP) in 2002. It is a monthly forum where researchers, and others interested in Kaurna lan- guage, can meet with Kaurna people to discuss their concerns. KWP, based at the Univer- sity of Adelaide, is not incorporated and attendance of meetings is voluntary. The com- mittee has gained a measure of credibility and respect from the Kaurna community, gov- ernment departments and the public and has recently signed a Memorandum of Under- standing with the University of Adelaide. However, KWP and the author sit, uneasily at times, at the intersection between the University and the community. This paper explores the nature of collaboration between Kaurna people and researchers through KWP in the context of reliance on historical documentation, much of which is open to interpretation. Linguistics provides some of the skills needed for interpretation of source materials. -

Djapirri talks about the importance of language and law which keeps the Yolngu culture strong. Keeping culture and language strong, helps Yolngu people share their culture with non-Indigenous Australians and develop relationships where we can work together hand in hand. Some quick statistics… Prior to European settlement, it is estimated that Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples spoke over 250 distinct languages, including over 600 dialects1 Today, 145 Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander languages are still spoken in Australia, however only 18 remain strong, meaning they are spoken by people of all ages2 In 2008, 11% of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples spoke an Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander language as their main language at home3. In 2006, over 80 Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander languages were being taught in 260 schools across Australia4 1 National Indigenous Languages -

(Register 16 July 1907, page 6h) Eagle Nest Hills - Near the Siccus River, named by E.C. Frome in 1843 because of an eagle nest found close to the summit, ‘comprised chiefly of slate of a reddish hue.’ It is not shown on contemporary maps and, in 1858, the surveyor Samuel Parry said it was ‘a pretty name and ought to be retained, but the hill being now known as “Mount Chambers”… I must, against my will, retain Chambers.’ Eagle on the Hill - In 1853, William Anderson was licensee of the ‘Anderson Hotel’ that was changed to its present name when the owner had a live eagle perched on a pole. Later, in 1883, it was described as ‘where a representative eagle-hawk, caged and contemplative, sits in solitary dignity, regretting some far-distant sheep run where he was wont to swoop upon the shepherd’s charge and make his meal of raw lamb chops’: The hotel was built by George Stevenson in 1850 and, in the first instance, was owned as an eating house by William Oliver. Its principal patrons were the first toilers of the hills - the bullock drivers. It was first licensed in 1852, the licensee being Mr. Gepp, the well known boniface of the Rock Tavern, near Grove Hill. Under Mr. Fordham’s proprietorship it was, in the first instance, christened ‘Anderson’s Inn’. Upon his death in 1864 when ‘his strength was completely exhausted by a carbuncle in the shoulder’, his wife and son carried on the proprietorship until December 1873. -

We sought to gain insight into barriers that prevent Indigenous Australians from seeking timely and preventive dental care. A qualitative study design was implemented, using face-to-face interviews conducted December 2019 to February 2020. Participants were 20 Indigenous Australians (10 women and 10 men) representing six South Australian Indigenous groups; Ngarrindjeri, Narungga, Kaurna, Ngadjuri, Wiramu, and Adnyamathanha. Age range was middle-aged to elderly. The setting was participants’ homes or workplaces. The main outcome measures were barriers and enablers to accessing timely and appropriate dental care. The findings were broadly grouped into eight domains: (1) fear of dentists; (2) confusion regarding availability of dental services; (3) difficulties making dental appointments; (4) waiting times; (5) attitudes and empathy of dental health service staff; (6) cultural friendliness of dental health service space; (7) availability of public transport and parking costs; and (8) ease of access to dental clinic. The findings indicate that many of the barriers to Indigenous people accessing timely and appropriate dental care may be easily remedied. -

South Australian HERITAGE COUNCIL SUMMARY OF STATE HERITAGE PLACE REGISTER ENTRY Entry in the South Australian Heritage Register in accordance with the Heritage Places Act 1993 NAME: Houghton Union Chapel PLACE NO.: 26493 ADDRESS: 21 Blackhill Road, Houghton SA 5131 CT 5462/764 AL2 FP3148 Hundred Yatala STATEMENT OF HERITAGE SIGNIFICANCE The Houghton Union Chapel is one of the earliest church, school and community buildings in the State, and has significant associations with the early religious development of South Australia. The Houghton Chapel was built cooperatively by members of the Wesleyan Methodist, Congregational and Episcopalian Churches in 1845, and was shared by them as a place of worship until 1874. South Australia was founded on principles of non-discrimination against dissenting denominations. Demonstrating the religious freedom the first settlers to South Australia enjoyed, the Houghton Union Chapel has significant associations with the distinctive early religious development of the colony, and in particular with the religious cooperation that prompted the construction of several multi-denominational or ‘Union’ Chapels. The building was also used as a local primary school from 1847 until 1877 and is one of the earliest examples of a building used for schooling prior to the standardisation of education in South Australia in 1875. The Chapel has been little altered for over 160 years, and thus provides a rare insight into early construction techniques and materials, as well as into the design of early church buildings. Magistrates Court
Heritage of the City of Adelaide MAGISTRATES COURT 262-280 Victoria Square The Magistrates Court, formerly the Supreme Court of South Australia, is one of the original buildings facing Victoria Square and one of the oldest public buildings in Adelaide. It was constructed as South Australia's first Supreme Court, criminal sessions before then having been held at a variety of temporary and unsatisfactory premises including the New Queen's Theatre in Gilles Arcade (see Royal Victoria/Queens Theatre). Tenders for a supreme courthouse were called in 1847 and a design was prepared by the colonial engineer, Edward Charles Frome, or, more likely, his successor, Richard Lambeth. R.G. Bowen's tender was accepted and work started late in 1847. The contractor soon encountered difficulties and delays due to deviations from the original design and the problem of obtaining sufficient number of large blocks of stone at that early date in the settlement's history. Bowen asked to substitute stuccoed brickwork but he was held to his contract, and, it appears, obtained the stone from several quarries including one at Beaumont which was opened in about 1838. Signed: Brooke Weber Date: 12 March 2018 2 ‘A Mad Proceeding’: Mid-Nineteenth-Century Female Emigration to Australia This thesis explores the experiences of female emigrants from Britain to Australia in the mid-nineteenth century, a transitionary era in which penal transportation faded, gold rushes boomed, and settler colonialism fostered a new society. This society flourished in six varied, yet wholly British, settler colonies; the presence of Indigenous populations was largely ignored by emigration advocates and emigrants alike. Despite the lack of an explicit discussion about race, a study of these women is rich in themes from gender and sexuality to class and social mobility, presented within a transnational context of migration. This thesis situates female emigration in a new imperial history framework, reading against the archival grain of traditional sources such as emigration society and Colonial Office records to illustrate the emigration process while also acknowledging women’s individuality and agency as they left behind homes and families, navigated the moral concerns of ships and immigration depots, and built new lives and societies in the Australian settler colonies. The thesis also turns to non-archival sources such as women’s fictional writings to address women’s personal experiences and find their voices in an era and situation largely dominated and directed by men.
