Malika Rawal

North Carolina

2020

Malika Rawal, of the North Carolina Affiliate, has participated in FPS since 2013. Her Community Problem Solving work has resulted in the formation of a non-profit to help sanitation through impoverished communities.

Malika says, “When I went to for the first time around four years ago, I noticed a distinct lack of sanitation that many of the villages had: trash all over the streets, unsanitary water, diminished dental hygiene, and more. On the inside, I was incredibly angry about the lack of attention this issue has, but on the outside, I converted that anger and funneled it into passion and excitement. When I got home, I problem-solved and researched solutions as well as specific communities in need of assistance. I began to picture an organization that could tackle multiple pieces of the problem: an organization that could spread awareness about the lack of sanitation in impoverished communities, conduct workshops to teach this importance, and provide hygiene resources for the underprivileged. With that concept in mind, I founded the HelpHygiene Foundation, a 501(c)3 organization based in Charlotte, NC. We have raised $47K+, supported 40k+ people by donating 45k+ toiletries and 11K+ shoes, installed multiple handpumps and toilets, and empower women by donating sanitary pads. To fulfill our mission abroad, we have 70 members who host drives and workshops to increase education on the importance of hygiene in the US, India, and West/East Africa.

Pranav Senthilvel

Kentucky

2020

As part of the Kentucky Affiliate, Pranav has participated, coached new students, and advocated for FPS since his 6th grade year when his team placed 8th at the International Conference. In Pranav’s own words: “Ever since I can remember, I’ve loved to create. From building towers out of Lincoln Logs in daycare to brainstorming solutions to biosecurity issues, I’ve always been captivated by the ability to take existing knowledge and work towards more.

My first experience with FPS came 7 years ago in the sixth grade. With a team of 3 other new students, I learned the ropes of the future FPS process from developing challenges to writing an action plan. Those skills have followed me on my path through school, giving me the opportunity to meet amazing friends, discover new ideas, and pursue new solutions both in and out of the official FPS competition.

Inspired by the problem solving approach I learned in FPS, I used these tools to discover an innovative solution to a problem I had witnessed in my community. I discovered that farms in my local community were increasingly damaged by crop diseases, something I learned about from the Biosecurity topic. Working through the FPS process, I developed a self-driving robot capa- ble of fighting crop disease before it happened. I ended up placing 1st at the Intel International Science and Engineering Fair, something that would not have been possible without my discovery of FPS.

Virtual International Conference 2020 35 Beyond the Beyonder

2019 Beyonder Award Winner – A recap of their progress since June 2019!

When the Johnson County Middle School CmPS team Juul Breakers left Boston last summer, they left as the International Grand Champion, Middle Division, and as the recipient of the 2019 Beyonder Award. Being named the winner of the Beyon- der not only humbled the students but also refueled their efforts to fight juul use among their peers. The following is a list of some of the actions that have resulted from their continued efforts.

Aug 22, 2020: Kentucky Governor Matt Bevin, Senator Ralph Alvaredo, Senator Brandon Smith, and Representative Bobby McCool visited Johnson County Middle School for the signing of House Bill 11, which encourages school systems in the blue- grass to ban tobacco and other nicotine-containing products from their campuses. It was the effort of the middle school’s group of Community Problem Solvers, also known as the Juul Breakers, who led the way for this legislation, according to the government officials present.

Last school year, as well as during the summer break, the nine students worked diligently to devise a bill that would pass both the house and the senate to ban addictive nicotine containing products from school campuses. Although their original- ly proposed bill was not the bill that was passed, government officials at the August ceremony credited the persistence and passion of these students for the success of House Bill 11. Principal Shawn Hall opened the ceremony and said the Juul Breakers were not politically driven, but that they did use the political process to achieve their goal.

“I admire their bravery, their courage, for all that they have accomplished,” he said. “Through their testimony in front of congressional committees, visiting other school systems and even being criticized by their own classmates. That took a lot of courage and a lot of bravery and these students have earned and deserved this reward for their hard work.” September 21, 2019: The Kentucky Medical Association presented the Juul Breakers with the Debra K. Best KMA Outstanding Layperson Award. The award is given to a non-physician or group in Kentucky who has made outstanding contributions in the field of public health and/or medical care. Several students, with support from school leadership, created a task force called “Juul Breakers” to address the issue of vaping and led a campaign titled “juulsnotkuul” to bring awareness and educa- tion to students about the dangers of e-cigarette use. The students also testified during the 2019 Kentucky General Assembly before the Senate Health and Welfare Committee on Senate Bill 218, which addressed student smoking and vaping preven- tion. Their tireless efforts drew the attention of numerous community leaders and state legislators. “At an age and a time in their lives when it is easy to be influenced by peers, pressured to fit in and “be cool,” these students have taken the courageous step to help address this significant public health battle, even at times facing bullying and hateful comments, in an effort to protect the health of their generation.” said Middlesboro Independent Schools Instructional Super- visor Anthony Maxwell, who nominated the group for the award.

October 28, 2019: the Thrillshare Post of the week for October 20th to 26th goes to the Juul Breakers. They were available to answer questions and present their findings on Juuls at the National Rural Education/KY Rural Education in Louisville, KY. October 30, 2019: Paul B. Hall Regional Medical Center and Pulmonologist Ayesa Sikder, MD. presented a $1,000 dollar check to the Juul Breakers to help them fight the growing use of juuls among their peers. According to a spokesperson for the hos- pital, “The CmPS team has educated students, school leadership, and lawmakers on the dangers of vaping and e-cigarettes, and the importance of keeping them out of schools.”

February 12, 2020: Juul Breakers met in Frankfort with Senator Brandon Smith to discuss efforts toward reducing juul use in schools. During this session, the group reviewed and submitted for review a revision of their original bill. February 14, 2020 the students posted a YouTube video under Juul Breakers CmPS Announcement. February 25,2020 Juul Breakers met with Kentucky State Attorney General Daniel Cameron. During the meeting, the students tried to persuade the attorney general to file a civil suit against the corporation responsible for juul use among young people. Several school districts have already filed suit, but the students wanted the state to join in the fight to hold the manufactur- er of Juuls legally and morally responsible for a generation of young people who have become addicted to this electronic cigarette.

Because of the Pandemic, the Juul Breakers’ efforts have been placed on hiatus. Their bill which was to be reviewed by the Education committee is currently stalled, but they continue to use the political system to fight for its passage. Even with the recognition from so many groups, the use of juuls continues to be a problem and the students have vowed to keep fighting its use. As a result of their actions, they have gained support from numerous state and local leaders. Through this process, they have learned how to stand up for issues that matter and how to persevere. Winning the Beyonder was an honor they never expected to receive, and they humbly hope they are worthy of this prestigious award.

54 Future Problem Solving Program Interational | FPSPI.ORG 2020 - 2021 Topics

First paragraphs of the upcoming topics: (Complete descriptions are found on www.fpspi.org/current-topics/)

Youth in Competitive Sports Millions of children around the world participate in competitive youth sports every year. Involvement in organized sports teaches many essential life skills – teamwork, confidence, the value of hard work, and discipline. While some competitive sports promote activity and a healthy lifestyle, others build skills such as mental agility. The hyper-competitiveness of youth sports raises concerns that children are pushed too hard to win and succeed. The sports options for youth are also evolving, as competitive e-sports emerge. Competitive sports can heighten aggression, pressure to win, and put children – who are still growing and developing – at risk for injuries. In many places, increasing costs of club sport-memberships and insurance exclude those who need social interaction and fitness the most.

Wearable Technology Traditionally, clothing and accessories have all been developed to fill basic needs. They provide warmth, protection from the elements or injury, and even serve to attract attention. Recently, the industry for wearable technology has transformed the way we think about clothing and accessories. Wearables have rapidly expanded to include heating elements, internet connections, watches, body monitors, and more. As more people grow accustomed to wearables in their daily lives, the possibilities for what the technologies can do are virtually limitless. They already monitor vital signs, send information to medical professionals, and even give individuals the ability to soar like a bird in personal flight suits. Smart sports uniforms can now reduce and identify injuries by regulating body temperature, supporting muscles and tendons, and gauging the force of impact. Attire with virtual reality functions is currently being developed to push this sector even further.

Human Environmental Impact Humans have always impacted the environment. Over time, the effects have increased as industrialization, urbanization, deforestation, processing of natural resources, the burning of fossil fuels and more technologies have developed. Examples of human’s impact on the environment are everywhere. Feeding the world’s growing population has adverse environmental effects such as overgrazing, deforestation, and agriculture-induced soil erosion. Water pollution from pesticides and fertilizers impacts the quality of water available for specific populations. Clearing of land and overfishing result in loss of biodiversity and disturbances to ecosystems. Industrialization and urbanization cause the release of toxic solid, liquid, or gaseous waste materials and are the catalyst for serious environmental hazards..

Personalized Medicine What if your doctor could diagnose you before you experience symptoms? Using information from an individuals’ genetic and molecular profile, researchers have begun to create patient-specific treatments with a level of precision never before seen. Personalized Medicine enables healthcare providers to use a patient’s cells to combat precisely identified diseases at an unprecedented pace.

Researchers at universities, biotech companies, laboratories, and pharmaceutical companies are continually making discoveries. Doctors and other healthcare professionals continue to explore how these discoveries can help patients and increase our knowledge about diseases.

Virtual International Conference 2020 55 2020 Adult Awards

JOHN DAUGHTREY AWARD The John Daughtrey Award recognizes outstanding FPSPI directors, evaluators, or staff. John Daughtrey, former Affiliate Director of the North and South Carolina Future Problem Solving Program, was a dedicated advocate of FPS. This year, we are pleased to honor Cheryl Whitesitt, Minnesota Affiliate Director, with this award. Cheryl has held many positions during her time with FPS: coach, evaluator, Affiliate Director, trainer, New Affiliate Mentor, and more. In her more than 30 years with the program, she always says that what she loves most is work- ing with the students in her Affiliate. She challenges her competitors to grow and think, and to never set limits on thoughts and reams. Cheryl has a passion for FPS and to making sure that future generations have the tools they need to succeed.

KEITH FRAMPTON AWARD The Keith Frampton Award recognizes outstanding FPS coaches. Keith Frampton, former head of the Burwood Teacher’s College in Australia, began the Australia/New Zealand FPS program in 1988 and became the first Nation- al Director in 1989. This year, we are delighted to honor Shannon Lichty and Sue Williams with this award. Shannon Lichty is a coach in the Texas Affiliate. For over 25 years, she has worked to turn her students into the -fu ture’s leaders. She has led over 100 students to IC, including several for virtual IC 2020! She started an FPS program at her school, Prestonwood Christian Academy, 21 years ago, growing it into a core component of instruction. She mentors and collaborates with other coaches in Texas, and inspires students to become evaluators for the state Affiliate. Shannon inspires students to think more critically and creatively each and every day.

Sue Williams has worked with FPS New Zealand for the last 20 years. As a coach, she has created a community of young FPSers in Christchurch, growing the programme both within schools and outside of teaching hours. Sue has also contributed greatly to the development of new coaches, helping to ensure that FPS is a sustainable programme within the country and also helping to spread FPS to different areas of New Zealand. Perhaps most importantly, she has achieved at such a high level throughout the Christchurch earthquakes and this year’s Al Noor Mosque attacks, being an incredibly supportive figure for the children of Christchurch. Sue is an incredible coach, mentor and all-round human being. Her impact on FPS has meant that students from diverse backgrounds have been offered the opportunity to enter into this fantastic world of critical thinking and creativity, gaining new knowledge, new skills and new friends along the way.

JEANNE CARLSON YES AWARD The Jeanne Carlson Yes Award recognizes outstanding volunteers and supporters. This award was created by Dr. E. Paul Torrance and Pansy, his wife, to honor a person who went above and beyond the call of duty for FPS. This year we are happy to honor Ethan Garza and Kirk Barnett with this award.

Ethan Garza has been a part of Texas FPS for 16 years; 6 years as a participant, and 10 years as evaluator and volun- teer. Ethan has impacted FPS through his exemplary service of evaluation, and designing Community Problem Solving in Texas. Ethan Garza serves on the Texas Advisory Board as Vice President, and began evaluating for Texas right out of high school for Community Problem Solving, Global Issues Problem Solving, and Scenario Writing. He also sometimes assists Florida with their Community Problem Solving evaluations, and has evaluated it at the In- ternational Conference for the last 8 years. He works to maintain the Texas Affiliate’s by-laws and keep paperwork up to date. Ethan has been dedicated to FPS for 17 of his 29 years, and is always looking to innovate and keep FPS moving forward.

Kirk Barnett has worked with Kentucky FPS since the late 1990s. He has mentored new coaches and their students, and passionately guides students to become better researchers of topics to understand the future of our world. He has been a trainer for KYFPSP for many years, promoting all components of the program. He focuses on teach- ing students research techniques, and he is in touch with academic teams of each of the FPS programs within schools. He mentors those who seek his help, and makes sure that everyone he works with understand the basic foundations of the program and the FPS process. Kirk has stepped in to fill the job of KY Program Director when needed, and has served on the Board of Directors. He has helped to set guidelines for fair and consistent competi- tions and evaluations. He is an innovative thinker for education and brings that to the forefront as a contributor to FPSP.
