From the Principal Tena koutou katoa Dates to Remember On Monday May 31, classes will finish at 1.40pm after period 4 to enable teachers Monday 31 May to be involved in an extended professional learning opportunity. Murphys Buses Samoan Language Week will run at 1.40pm and the other buses will run at the normal time of 3.20pm. Students are welcome to remain at school and study in the Library. School Finishes 1.40pm We have planned to hold a version of House Day on Tuesday 1 June during periods 4 and 5. Normal Tuesday 1 June classes will take place in periods 2 and 3. It has been some years since we were last able to hold House Day , 1:00pm House Day, as last year and at the beginning of this year Covid 19 interrupted our plans and in previous years Massey Park had not been available. This will be the first time we are holding a whole Wednesday 2 June school inter-house event on the school grounds, as well as being the first time we have held a House Talent Quest, PAC, 6:30pm Day so late in the year. Such inter-house events build school and House spirit, and we hope to see students at all year levels participating with enthusiasm. Students may wear House colours to school Friday 4 June on Tuesday, but they will need to have warm clothing as the events are held on the school field. If the Samoan Cultural Dress Day weather is wet or too cold, or if the field is not up to being the venue, then we will make the call on Monday afternoon. -

We are well into the term and its routines. Last week at assembly we recognized the students who gained NCEA Level 1 and 2 with Excellence endorsements. It was a great example to younger students to see the students from their House who had aimed high, and achieved at the highest level. I wish them well as they build on this performance for this year. Excel- lence can look different for different people. So as long as the goal is to do your very best, then reaching that goal is your ‘excellence’. Next week’s Student Achievement Interview Day is an excellent op- portunity for all three sides of the learning triangle – student, teacher, family – to check they are all working together and accessing all support required so that each individual student at the end of the year can say, “I did my best, and am proud of myself”. This year our focus remains on improving student achievement, engaging students through relevant learning pathways and retaining students through to the end of Year 13. We have been pleased to see movement in some areas already. Two examples are the achievement of last year’s Year 11 Maori students in NCEA which is definitely trending upwards and the increased number of boys gaining NCEA at Excellence. -

The function was run as ‘pseudo rugby match’ with the ball being passed from speaker to speaker as we traversed 30 January Brett’s life at the college and in the Waiuku community. A final successful conversion by Brett brought Yr 9 & Yr 13 students start the official speeches to a close. As a school we salute and acknowledge Brett for his huge contribution to our college and to our town. 31 January Brett will be back for a bit of part-time teaching in 2018 as he weans himself gently away from his All Yr levels in career-long addiction to Waiuku College history students! 6 February STAFFING CHANGES Waitangi Day Renske Hughes replaces Brett as Head of Social Sciences from the start of 2018. We also have a new Head of Physical Education. Kerry Potts replaces Rachel Sinclair who has decided to step down and 23 February work part-time since her return from maternity leave. Class ID Photos Deputy Principal Tina Filipo is leaving us to move to Howick College and we hope to appoint a replace- ment to start in Term 2 of 2018. -
