Natural Capital Assistant Eastern & Western

The Duchy of Cornwall Estate The Duchy of Cornwall is a private estate which funds the public, charitable and private activities of The Prince of Wales and his family. The Duchy consists of around 52,971 hectares of land in 23 , mostly in the South West of England. The Duchy estate was created in 1337 by Edward III for his son and heir, Prince Edward, and its primary function was to provide him and future Princes of Wales with an income from its assets. The current of Cornwall, HRH The Prince of Wales, is actively involved in running the Duchy and his philosophy is to improve the estate and pass it on to future in a stronger and better condition.

Natural Capital Assistant Main purpose and The Duchy is working with its tenants to undertake an audit of seven natural scope of role capitals on its farms; soils, water, biodiversity, access, cultural heritage, landscape and air quality. Our aim is to use this information to agree ‘integrated resource management plans’ with the tenants to ensure that the estate is managed in a sustainable way.

The audit is due to be completed by April 2022 and to assist in its timely delivery a vacancy has arisen for two Natural Capital Assistants from spring 2020 until the 31st 2022. We are looking for knowledgeable and enthusiastic people to support the Duchy’s Natural Capital team in a range of tasks to support the audit including:

 undertaking field audits of tenanted farms to determine the extent, quality and potential of their natural capital resources  inputting field data into the Duchy’s bespoke Qgis database and producing farm reports  working alongside colleagues and with tenants to explain the audit findings for the maintenance and enhancement of natural capital features  establishing farm scale ‘trials’ where the audit findings can be demonstrated to tenants and colleagues to promote the development and uptake of the audit recommendations  establishing communication portals for farm tenants and the Duchy’s staff that contribute to the greater understanding of the audit and the adoption of the farm reports.

Position The post reports to the Natural Capital Project Adviser in each of the Eastern and Western Districts and has no direct reports.

Location There are two posts, one in each Duchy as follows: Western District post: Based in Lostwithiel, Cornwall. The Western District includes rural estates in Devon, Cornwall covering both upland and lowland farms as well as the unique environment of the Isles of Scilly Eastern District post: Based in Newton St. Loe, Bath The Eastern District extends to land holdings in 15 counties including the Wessex , Somerset, Herefordshire and Gloucestershire. Limits of Authority Your day-to-day activities will be directed by a Natural Capital Adviser. However, you will from time to time be working alone in the field and will be expected to take prudent independent decisions.

Person specifications A Diploma, Degree or equivalent in a relevant environmental land management Education, subject is essential. Experience &

Qualifications Strong attention to detail and good communication skills are essential. You will be representing the Duchy and as such you will need to present yourself accordingly in all face to face, email and phone communication.

You will have a sound knowledge of rural land use, an understanding of upland and/or lowland agricultural systems relevant to the area in which you would work as well as a good understanding of the sustainable management of biodiversity, soils and water in an agricultural landscape.

You will preferably have previous experience working with digital mapping systems.

Initiative and ability to work as part of a team as well as independently.

You will need to hold a current UK driving licence and have the use of a private car for business use for site visits.

Personal You are discreet, organised, able to build positive working relationships at all levels; able to deal professionally with tenants and work colleagues; precise and accurate in your work, open to discussion, change and development; easy-going yet professional, self-directed and productive.

You will need to work and communicate effectively with farm tenants as well as establish positive working relationships within the Duchy’s offices. You will be a representative of the Duchy and must deal professionally with industry professionals, tenants and the general public.

Reward package The role will be full time (35 hrs per week) Salary of £22,000 to £25,000 depending on experience. The Duchy will contribute 12% of salary into its group Stakeholder pension scheme. You will be entitled to 28 days holiday plus entitlement to the 8 bank holidays in England and Wales.
