Media Release Emmanuelle Seigner and Roman Polanski at ZFF D Media Release Emmanuelle Seigner and Roman Polanski at ZFF D’APRÈS UNE HISTOIRE VRAIE as Gala Premiere Zurich, September 29, 2017 Actress Emmanuelle Seigner, director Roman Polanski and producer Wassim Béji will present their most recent film D’APRÈS UNE HISTOIRE VRAIE in person on Monday, October 2. The film will screen at the Zurich Film Festival as a Gala Premiere. Lead actress Emmanuelle Seigner will attend the festival together with her husband Roman Polanski. The thriller D’APRÈS UNE HISTOIRE VRAIE (BASED ON A TRUE STORY) is a French-Belgian-Polish co-production, which also stars Eva Green and Vincent Perez. The screenplay was penned by last year’s recipient of the ZFF’s A Tribute to... award Olivier Assayas. Emmanuelle Seigner had her first big role in Roman Polanski’s FRANTIC (1988) alongside Harrison Ford. Further successes include BITTER MOON (1992) with Kristin Scott Thomas and THE NINTH GATE (1999) with Johnny Depp. D’APRÈS UNE HISTOIRE VRAIE The often-empty phrase “based on a true story” has turned many a mediocre novel into a bestseller. Writer Delphine Dayriex’s recently published book about her own family is also a resounding hit. Nevertheless, she now feels completely drained and suffers from an increasingly serious case of writer’s block. One day she meets a mysterious and strangely obtrusive woman who calls herself ‘L’, claims to be a fan, and turns out to be a ghostwriter. The two women soon develop a special friendship, and it’s not long before ‘L’ becomes an apparently selfless live-in assistant… Based on Delphine de Vigan’s eponymous novel, master director Roman Polanski has created a pleasantly unsettling thriller about reality, fiction and the power of the imagination. Director Roman Polanski first attracted attention with his psycho thriller KNIFE IN THE WATER (1962). He garnered worldwide acclaim for his comedy THE FEARLESS VAMPIRE KILLERS (1967), in which he also played the lead role. Further successes include the thriller ROSEMARY’S BABY (1968), CHINATOWN (1974), FRANTIC (1988), and the multi award- winning Holocaust drama THE PIANIST (2002). ZFF Main Partners .

  • Occult Is Other: What, Where, Who, Why
Occult is Other: What, Where, Who, Why, How Occultus (the occult), according to Occultus: the hidden and macabre in literature and film, is "that which is hidden, secret, mysterious, inexplicable, magic, alchemy, not readily illuminated and not easily ascertained or understood" (Tobienne, “Occultus” 2). The occult, by nature, is not evil, but its practitioners are imbibed with a certain level of power that the mundane are not afforded, which makes their actions more subject to scrutiny. As Tobienne describes, “there is more to the occult than things that go ‘bump’ in the night” (Occultus, 2). Temptation, manipulation, and rejection of accepted mores are themes that prevail among the practitioners of the occult, simply because the occult itself falls outside the boundaries of society and all of its conventions. The presence of the occult weaves an intellectual underworld beneath the curtain of the common quotidian dimension. The occult is a mechanism of deceit--therefore, it can only be undone by knowledge. However, this presents a dichotomous conundrum: one may only become a part of the occult by gaining sight of it, but with this knowledge, the occult--that which is secret--becomes a candid facet of one’s reality. The occult, then, must be transitive: unique to every individual and ultimately forever changing as the fabric of their reality metamorphoses. This comprehensive essay seeks to understand the occult as the creator, guardian, and mentor of another realm which exists outside of the physical and spiritual peripheries of the familiar one as well as why it exists and how it is destroyed.

  • Sony Pictures Classics to Release Roman Polanski's Carnage in North
SONY PICTURES CLASSICS TO RELEASE ROMAN POLANSKI’S CARNAGE IN NORTH AMERICA NEW YORK (April 14, 2011) – Sony Pictures Classics announced today that they will release Roman Polanski’s new film, CARNAGE, in North America. Polanski penned the script with Yasmina Reza, which is adapted from Reza’s 2009 Tony Award® winning play God of Carnage. CARNAGE is produced by Said Ben Said (THE WITNESSES, THE GIRL ON THE TRAIN) and stars Jodie Foster, Kate Winslet, Christoph Waltz and John C. Reilly. SPC expects an end of year release. Sony Pictures Classics acquired the film from Said Ben Said and ICM’s Jeff Berg. Polanski assembled an all-star crew to work on CARNAGE, director of photographer Pawel Edelman (THE GHOST WRITER, RAY, THE PIANIST), production designer Dean Tavoularis (THE NINTH GATE, THE GODFATHER, THE OUTSIDERS), editor Herve de Luze (THE GHOST WRITER, WILD GRASS, TELL NO ONE), costume designer Milena Canonero (DARJEELING LIMITED, MARIE ANTOINETTE, A CLOCKWORK ORANGE) and composer Alberto Iglesias (TALK TO HER, VOLVER, THE CONSTANT GARDENER, THE KITE RUNNER). Set in contemporary Brooklyn, New York, CARNAGE centers on two pairs of parents one of whose child has hurt the other at a public park, who meet to discuss the matter in a civilized manner. However, as the evening goes on, the parents become increasingly childish, resulting in the evening devolving into chaos. “In today’s world of moviemaking, Roman Polanski, his screenwriting partner Yasmina Reza, his cast, his crew, and his producer Said Ben Said represent the best of the best. We are so fortunate and pleased to bring CARNAGE, which promises to be an experience of intense emotion and hilarity, to the American audiences,” states Sony Pictures Classics.

  • La Vie En Rose Talent
La Vie en Rose Talent: Marion Cotillard, Gerard Depardieu, Emmanuelle Seigner, Jean-Pierre Martins, Manon Chevallier, Pascal Greggory Date of Review: Friday, 13 July 2007 Director/Producer/Editor: Olivier Dahan Duration: 140 minutes Classification: M We rate it: Four and a half stars. Given that it’s Harry Potter time again (the fifth film in the series has rolled out this week) it’s also that part of the cinematic year during which any number of smaller, quieter, even – dare one say it – potentially more interesting films can come and go almost undetected in the wake of the box-office juggernauts. Not that there’s anything wrong with young Harry; it’s just that enormous franchises like his can so easily obscure worthy smaller films that dare to open at around the same time. La Vie en Rose is precisely such an offering: a carefully made and beautifully performed bio-pic of legendary French songstress Edith Piaf. The film has been a big deal in its native country, and rightly so; here though it’s a minor art-house release, and in my opinion it’s absolutely worthy of discussion. Piaf of course remains a cherished icon for the French. Rising as she did from a truly awful childhood (which comprised numerous abandonments at the hands of her deeply flawed parents, erstwhile adoptions by brothel-workers, and serious illnesses that would have profound effects on her in later life) Piaf was discovered by a middle- level nightclub owner and given the opportunity to air her extraordinary voice, the voice that would help its owner transcend her difficult circumstances and somehow encapsulate her country’s post-war pain.

Not one has the poise to play the leading role. He is getting ready to leave when Vanda appears: an unbridled and brazen whirlwind of energy. Vanda embodies everything Thomas hates. She is crude, idiotic, and will stop at nothing to get the part. But when Thomas finds himself backed into a corner and lets her try her luck, he is amazed to see Vanda transformed. Not only has she found the right props and costumes, but she understands the character (whose name she shares) intimately, and knows all her lines by heart. The "audition" lengthens and intensifies, and Thomas’s attraction starts to develop into an obsession… 3 INTERVIEW WITH ROMAN POLANSKI / DIRECTOR, CO-WRITER AND PRODUCER How did you come across David Ives’ play, inspired by Sacher-Masoch’s novel?
