Intro 1996 National List of Vascular Plant Species That Occur in Wetlands The Fish and Wildlife Service has prepared a National List of Vascular Plant Species That Occur in Wetlands: 1996 National Summary (1996 National List). The 1996 National List is a draft revision of the National List of Plant Species That Occur in Wetlands: 1988 National Summary (Reed 1988) (1988 National List). The 1996 National List is provided to encourage additional public review and comments on the draft regional wetland indicator assignments. The 1996 National List reflects a significant amount of new information that has become available since 1988 on the wetland affinity of vascular plants. This new information has resulted from the extensive use of the 1988 National List in the field by individuals involved in wetland and other resource inventories, wetland identification and delineation, and wetland research. Interim Regional Interagency Review Panel (Regional Panel) changes in indicator status as well as additions and deletions to the 1988 National List were documented in Regional supplements. The National List was originally developed as an appendix to the Classification of Wetlands and Deepwater Habitats of the United States (Cowardin et al.1979) to aid in the consistent application of this classification system for wetlands in the field.. The 1996 National List also was developed to aid in determining the presence of hydrophytic vegetation in the Clean Water Act Section 404 wetland regulatory program and in the implementation of the swampbuster provisions of the Food Security Act. While not required by law or regulation, the Fish and Wildlife Service is making the 1996 National List available for review and comment. -

Outline of angiosperm phylogeny: orders, families, and representative genera with emphasis on Oregon native plants Priscilla Spears December 2013 The following listing gives an introduction to the phylogenetic classification of the flowering plants that has emerged in recent decades, and which is based on nucleic acid sequences as well as morphological and developmental data. This listing emphasizes temperate families of the Northern Hemisphere and is meant as an overview with examples of Oregon native plants. It includes many exotic genera that are grown in Oregon as ornamentals plus other plants of interest worldwide. The genera that are Oregon natives are printed in a blue font. Genera that are exotics are shown in black, however genera in blue may also contain non-native species. Names separated by a slash are alternatives or else the nomenclature is in flux. When several genera have the same common name, the names are separated by commas. The order of the family names is from the linear listing of families in the APG III report. For further information, see the references on the last page. Also like most people, I leaf through the guides until I find a picture of the plant in question. The pictures usually don’t “look like” the plant in question, however, even when correct. The problem I decided, is that the illustra- tions are too small and don’t show all the features of the specimen. In that respect, I find that draw- ings, such as those in Peterson’s Guide to Wildflowers of the Southwest and Texas often work better, but they still don’t give one a good idea of the size of the plant. Botanists use herbarium collections. They collect a specimen of the unkown plant and physi- cally compare it to specimens in the herbarium. I’ve never visited one, but I’ve seen examples of the dried, brown, pressed specimens they contain. I prefer color. I decided that what we amateur botanists need is a photographic herbarium in which all the species are presented life size, in color. Auxillary macro or location photographs could illustrate key identifying features and the habitat it’s found in. -

It occurs commonly in Japan and worldwide and causes serious crop losses. However, little effort has been made to breed lisianthus for resistance to this disease. We initiated a breeding program for resistance to F. solani in 2014. Twenty-nine lisianthus cultivars (E. grandiflorum) and one inbred line of Eustoma exaltatum were evaluated for resistance to two isolates (MAFF712388 and MAFF712411) of F. solani, as a first step toward the breeding of resistant cultivars. Seedlings were inoculated following injury by needle, then grown using hydroponic equipment—an efficient and reliable method for evaluating resistance. We found large differences in resistance among the 29 cultivars and the one inbred line tested. ‘Papillon Pink Flash’ was highly resistant to both isolates and showed no disease symptoms in a total of four tests. Furthermore, E. exaltatum Ohkawa No. 1 was highly resistant to isolate MAFF712388, showing no disease symptoms, and resistant to isolate MAFF712411. -

2003SOUTHEASTERN NATURALIST 2(3):347–368 THE VASCULAR FLORA OF GUS ENGELING WILDLIFE MANAGEMENT AREA, ANDERSON COUNTY, TEXAS 1 2,3 2 JASON R. SINGHURST , JAMES C. CATHY , DALE PROCHASKA , 2 4 5 HAYDEN HAUCKE , GLENN C. KROH , AND WALTER C. HOLMES ABSTRACT - Field studies in the Gus Engeling Wildlife Management Area, which consists of approximately 4465.5 ha (11,034.1 acres) of the Post Oak Savannah of Anderson County, have resulted in an annotated checklist of the vascular flora corroborating its remarkable species richness. A total of 930 taxa (excluding family names), belonging to 485 genera and 145 families are re- corded. Asteraceae (124 species), Poaceae (114 species), Fabaceae (67 species), and Cyperaceae (61 species) represented the largest families. Six Texas endemic taxa occur on the site: Brazoria truncata var. pulcherrima (B. pulcherrima), Hymenopappus carrizoanus, Palafoxia reverchonii, Rhododon ciliatus, Trades- cantia humilis, and T. subacaulis. Within Texas, Zigadenus densus is known only from the study area. The area also has a large number of species that are endemic to the West Gulf Coastal Plain and Carrizo Sands phytogeographic distribution patterns. Eleven vegetation alliances occur on the property, with the most notable being sand post oak-bluejack oak, white oak-southern red oak-post oak, and beakrush-pitcher plant alliances. INTRODUCTION The Post Oak Savannah (Gould 1962) comprises about 4,000,000 ha of gently rolling to hilly lands that lie immediately west of the Pineywoods (Timber belt). Some (Allred and Mitchell 1955, Dyksterhuis 1948) consider the vegetation of the area as part of the deciduous forest; i.e., burned out forest that is presently regenerating. -

Stems up to 20 inches (10 - 50 cm) tall, hairy both above and below the leafy bracts. Leaf-like bracts 3 per stem, attached above the middle of the stem, each bract with 3 or more narrow segments. Leaves basal only, with hairy leaf stalks up to 8 inches (3 - 20 cm) long and with 3 leaflets, each leaflet deeply 3- lobed and toothed. Flowers less than 2 inches (5 cm) wide, solitary at the top of the stem, with 10 - 20 narrow, petal-like sepals, white or blue on the upper surface, pink or tan on the lower surface; there are no petals; at the center of the flower, a thimble-shaped “cone” of densely packed pistils is surrounded by 60 - 70 stamens; each pistil will develop into a tiny, seedlike fruit. Fruits less than inch long, oval, densely hairy. Similar and Related Rare Species: Carolina anemone (Anemone caroliniana, Special Concern) has leafy bracts at or below the middle of the stem; the stem is hairy only above the bracts. Its flowers are blue, purple, or white, and it has underground runners rather than a tuber. -

Shinn.], a member of the family Gentianaceae, is native to the central and southern part of United States. Lisianthus is a relatively new floral crop to the international market, quickly rankes in the top ten cut flowers worldwide due to its garish flowers and excellent post-harvest life. Due to its importance there are several tissue culture studies working on the micropropagation of this plant by using a variety of plant growth regulators (PGRs). With the aim of contribution to these works in the present study we aimed to investigate the effect of Gibberellic acid (GA3) at different concentrations (0.0, 0.5, 1.0, 2.0 and 4.0 mg l-1) on morphometric parameters of Lisianthus during 30 and 80-day of incubation periods. In sum, our findings revealed that according to the results, there was no significant change for shoot number, shoot length and root number but very slight increase in number of leaves (1.0 mg l-1) and root length (0.5 mg l-1) of GA3 during 30-day incubation period. On the other hand, for 80-day incubation period, the highest root length and number of leaves were obtained (respectively, 2.48 ± 1.25 cm and 14.17 ± 4.59) for 2.0 mg l-1 concentration. -
