August SofN Foundation 4th was the first in person get together inside and everyone felt safe. Contact Most of us did put on masks until we were seated and tables mostly stayed in bubble groups, so for anyone who is concerned, we are doing Page 3 everything possible to keep everyone safe. We all had a great time Meeting agenda visiting and watching an inspiring video of a group of kayakers spending Page 4 months in the fjords of Norway. A new and beautiful way of touring the Hope Floats country. Page 5 In previous newsletters we had articles about using plastic bags for A Lit På Norske Mercy Mats instead of throwing them in the landfill. On Wednesday Page 6 September 1st at 6:30 we will learn how to make the mats and have a Kalendar hands-on opportunity to be part of this project. There are many jobs and lots of ways to get your hands busy. Bring all of the bags you have been saving and come join us for this worthwhile project. Come even if you don’t have bags, we would appreciate the help. Instead of pot-luck Idun is providing desserts and snacks with coffee, lemonade and water, or bring your own beverage, while we enjoy the program. Looking ahead to October, we plan to continue the safe guidelines for gathering with desserts and beverages provided by Idun. October is Foundation Month in SOFN and along with learning about the Foundation we will have an event that Idun had a few years ago which everyone enjoyed very much called the Pound Auction. Read inside about the auction and see what interesting things you can come up with. (Remember to bring your wallet, but we also take checks.) Looking forward to seeing you. September 1st Meeting Mercy Mats for the Homeless In September, Idun members will gather at Trinity Lutheran Church for our September 1 meeting to learn how to make Mercy Mats woven out of plastic grocery bags. These plastic waterproof mats are given to organizations for homeless people to use as sleeping mats. Bring the many “clean” plastic bags you have collected from grocery stores, and any other stores from your shopping trips. Currently recycling areas and stores that used to accept these plastic bags for recycling are no longer taking them. By making these Mercy Mats we recycle this plastic material into a useful product and keep the plastic bags out of the landfill. It takes several hundred plastic grocery bags to make one adult-size sleeping mat so start saving your plastic bags and even ask your neighbors for their “clean” plastic bags too. At our August meeting Dee Grimsrud brought a large plastic garbage bag full of these bags to help start us out. This is an on-going project. We will all learn the basic steps in the process so we can continue work at home. If you want more information, google: plastic bags for homeless tutorial or use this link https://youtu.be/5JNe-hce0sY October 6th Meeting October is Foundation Month! A live "pound auction" is being planned for the October 6th meeting to benefit the Sons of Norway Foundation. Each person attending the meeting is asked to bring an item for the auction. The item should weigh about a pound. The items should be new, gently used, food or baked goods. Please wrap your items so it’s a mystery what is being bid on. After all packages have been auctioned off, they will be opened to discover the treasures inside. All proceeds will be donated to the Foundation. If you have any questions, contact Mary Bennett at 608-837-8335. Hope Floats Inspired by Norway’s stave churches, Hope Cathedral is a unique structure, floating on a barge near the mouth of the river Glomma in Fredrikstad, Norway. It is constructed out of timber and over a thousand recycled plastic fish boxes. The multi-colored fish boxes, recovered during shoreline clean-ups, have been recycled into jewel-like roof tiles. Solveig Egeland, an artist and cultural advisor to the Church of Norway’s Diocese of Borg, was inspired to start the project back in 2018 as she witnessed more and more plastic waste being deposited on her favorite beaches. In their stead, she envisioned an edifice of many colors rising from the sea. That fall, 35 volunteers banded together to realize her dream. They have since been joined by thousands of people from across the globe, binding people of different faiths and nationalities together into a supportive, sustainability- focused community. Now nearly finished, Hope Cathedral was opened to the public on June 5, 2021.
