This is the first scheduled day of the program. Day 2 – Travel from Lima to Huaraz (10,000 ft / 3048 m) by bus; hotel in Huaraz. Day 3 – Acclimatize in Huaraz with a day hike to Lago Churup (14,600 ft / 4450); hotel in Huaraz. Day 4 – Second day to acclimatize above Huaraz with a day-hike. Organize gear in the evening; hotel in Huaraz. Day 5 – Drive to and establish base camp in the Ishinca Valley (14,000 ft / 4267 m) Day 6 – Acclimatize and review alpine climbing skills in preparation for our climbs Day 7 – Climb Nevado Urus Este (17,783 ft / 5420 m). This is a moderate climb on a glacier up to 30 degrees Day 8 – Additional skills practice or weather day if needed. Day 9 – Climb Ishinca (18,143 ft / 5530 m). This climb in more challenging than Urus, with major crevasses to skirt, steeper slopes, and a dramatic belayed finish on a 40- to 45- degree headwall just below the summit. High quality climbing and beautiful views. Day 10 – Rest day Day 11 – Move to high camp (17,060 ft / 5200 m) to be in position for an ascent of Tocllaraju Day 12 – Climb Tocllaraju (19,790 ft / 6032 m). This ascent offers quite varied glacier travel, with gradually steepening slopes, major crevasses and a bergschrund to avoid or negotiate, and short, steep steps that we belay intermittently. This is a rewardingly challenging climb that is scenic throughout and an exciting finish to Part 1 of the program. Descend to basecamp. Day 13 – Extra day for weather or acclimatization as needed earlier. Day 14 – Hike out and drive back to Huaraz. Hotel – End of Part One – ©American Alpine Institute 2019 Day 15 For Part-1-only-climbers: Travel back to Lima. We recommended that you choose a flight that departs Lima after 10pm. Otherwise, fly out the next morning. – Part Two: Chopicalqui Ascent – Day 15 – Prepare for Part 2 with a day of packing and rest in Huaraz. Hotel in Huaraz Day 16 – Drive to Chopicalqui trailhead. Hike to Moraine Camp at approximately 16,000 ft / 4875 m. Day 17 – Move up the glacier to a high camp at approximately 18,300 ft / 5578 m. Day 18 – Climb Chopicalqui’s classic southwest ridge. Our route begins with travel up a major glacier, followed by gradually steepening terrain on a broad ridge with some interesting route finding to avoid crevasses and seracs. As we move higher the ridge narrows and steepens, and while this finish to our ascent is not highly technical, the exposure to either side is striking. After time enjoying being on the summit and photographing the many peaks that surround us, we descend to Moraine Camp. Day 19 – Descend to the road; drive back to Huaraz; celebratory dinner together. Day 20 – Travel back to Lima. We recommended that you choose a flight that departs Lima after 10pm. Otherwise, fly out the next morning. – End Part Two – – Land Cost Inclusions and Exclusions – Inclusions: ● Hotel in Lima (1 night) and Huaraz (four nights for Part 1; two nights for Part 2) on a shared twin basis; round trip transportation between Lima and Huaraz ● Tents while trekking or climbing on a shared basis. 476 THE AMERICAN ALPINE JOURNAL glaciers that our access was finally made through the mountain rampart. One group operated there and climbed some of the high-grade towers by stylish and demanding routes, while the other group climbed from a hid- den loch, ringed by attractive peaks, north of the valley and intermingled with the mountains visited by the 1971 St. Andrews expedition (A.A.J., 1972. 18: 1, p. 156). At the halfway stage we regrouped for new objec- tives in the side valleys close to Base Camp, while for the final efforts we placed another party by canoe amongst the most easterly of the smooth and sheer pinnacles of the “Land of the Towers,” while another canoe party voyaged east to climb on the islands of Pamiagdluk and Quvernit. Weather conditions were excellent throughout the summer: most climbs were done on windless and sunny days and bivouacs were seldom contem- plated by the parties abseiling down in the night gloom. Two mountains may illustrate the nature of the routes: Angiartarfik (1845 meters or 6053 feet; Grade III), a complex massive peak above Base Camp, was ascended by front-pointing in crampons up 2300 feet of frozen high-angled snow and then descended on the same slope in soft thawing slush: this, the easiest route on the peak, became impracticable by mid-July when the snow melted off to expose a crevassed slope of green ice; Twin Pillars of Pamiagdluk (1373 meters or 4505 feet; Grade V), a welded pair of abrupt pinnacles comprising the highest peak on this island, was climbed in a three-day sortie by traversing on to its steep slabby east wall and following a thin 300-metre line to the summit crest.

Peru Climbing School Urus, Ishinca, & Tocllaraju June 1-15, 2016; May 31-14, 2017 $3500 (land costs) Difficulty Level: Introductory – No technical climbing or altitude experience is necessary. It is imperative, however, that you are in good physical shape, and able to hike in rugged terrain for long days. We are happy to detail physical and technical training programs as needed to get you ready for our introductory expeditions. ©2004-2016 All Rights Reserved Alpenglow Expeditions The Cordillera Blanca is a stunning range of five and six thousand meter peaks, and the Ishinca Valley is one of a half dozen that cut deep into the center of the range. The Ishinca Valley offers the perfect place to establish a base camp, from which we can climb three peaks. It provides countless opportunities for learning and practicing the skills essential to high altitude mountaineering while climbing progressively higher and more complex mountains. Our trip begins with two days in Hauraz, the mountaineering capital of South America. We will then head into the Ishinca Valley, using burros to assist bringing two weeks of food and equipment into our base camp. From this camp, at 14,000 feet, we will utilize the surrounding glaciers and mountains to learn and then hone basic mountaineering skills. These skills will include route assessment, roped glacier travel, crevasse rescue, crampon and ice axe skills, and an understanding of high altitude physiology. In between skills sessions we will soak up the incredible beauty of this remote valley. The main goal of our “school” programs is to obtain the mountain skills necessary to be a confident and active participant on this and other climbing teams moving forward.

  • Gipfeltrekking Tocllaraju, 6034M

PERUVIAN ANDES ADVENTURES SANTA CRUZ TREK with CLIMBING THREE PEAKS ISHINCA VALLEY 12 Days Trek & climb (plus one rest day in Huaraz) Ascending Punta Union Pass – Santa Cruz Trek For those looking for an extended trekking & climbing trip culminating in an attempt on a 6000m peak, we offer a combination with the scenic Santa Cruz LLanganuco trek for acclimatisation followed by seven days based in beautiful Ishinca Valley and climbing three peaks Santa Cruz Llanganuco Trek Grade: Moderate A classic trek within the Cordillera Blanca, the popularity of this shortish expedition is due to its spectacular mountain views, stunning blue lakes and the challenging Punta Union pass at 4750m. This trek offers an amazing variety of scenery in only 4 days and gives good acclimatisation for a climbing trip. Three Climbs in the Ishinca Valley Peaks: Urus: 5495m (18028 ft) Grade: PD- /Moderate snow climbing, physically demanding Ishinca: 5530m (18143 ft) Grade: PD- /Moderate snow climbing, physically demanding Tocllaraju: 6034m (19797 ft) Grade: D / Hard / Some steep & technical climbing – not suitable for beginners Tocllaraju From our base in the beautiful Ishinca Valley we can climb three peaks. Urus & Ishinca are non technical peaks which are ideal as warm up climbs, then finally we attempt 6034m Tocllaraju. Some years, depending on amounts of snowfall, Urus involves more time climbing on a moraine ridge rather than on snow & ice, but it is nonetheless an excellent peak on which to gain further acclimatisation and strength. Ishinca is a rewarding climb for both experienced and beginner climbers, with long enjoyable slopes of good snow.

5752m | Three Peaks Expedition | Peru Length: 16 Days When: May – September Investment: $10,950 USD Overview THREE PEAKS EXPEDITION | NON-TECHNICAL MOUNTAINEERING IN A UNIQUELY PERUVIAN SETTING | TRIP HIGHLIGHTS ARE URUS ESTE, ISHINCA AND PISCO OESTE. If you are relatively new to mountaineering and want an introduction to climbing relatively straightforward peaks at altitude then this is the trip for you. This itinerary will afford you ample time to acclimatize with two lightweight, non-technical day walks to altitude, and two exciting preparatory climbs, culminating in the picturesque Pisco Oeste (5752m). If your tramping and bushwalking trips are no longer quite challenging enough and you shiver at the thought of sharing the Inca trail or the Everest trek with hundreds of others, then come and have a thrilling experience in relative solitude. This region is often overlooked, so it remains somewhat of an unspoiled secret. We offer is a low impact, high client satisfaction trip, with close guide to client contact. These peaks are often guided 1:4 (guide to client ratio), but in our experience is that safety, satisfaction, personal interaction and flexibility all improve immensely when the ratios are reduced. The logistics and decision making is taken care of so you can enjoy these peaks from the end of an experienced climbers rope. Experience with a walking axe and crampons is useful but not essential. Itinerary (16 Days): trek to base camp. You can choose to Day 1 – Meet in Huaraz for trip briefing travel with just a light daypack and and gear check. Dinner and overnight allow your burro to carry gear.
