Ars Aevi Museum – Symbol of New Europe in Sarajevo

ARS AEVI PROJECT / MUSEUM OF CONTEMPORARY ART SARAJEVO

Ars Aevi is the most ambitious cultural and developmental project in Bosnia and Herzegovina. It represents a unique project aimed at creation of the museum of contemporary art in Sarajevo. Since its beginning in 1992, the first year of the , it has been developing as an expression of collective will and ethical cooperation between most prominent world’s artists, curators and museums of contemporary art.

In 1999, architect Renzo Piano joined Ars Aevi and took on the task of designing the Ars Aevi Museum as his own contribution to the project. In 2002, he designed and constructed the Ars Aevi Bridge as the first completed element of the Ars Aevi Museum, and remains one of the leading supporters of the initiative.

The core of the Project is the Ars Aevi Collection, whose founders are renowned international and regional artists. The Collection is formed by applying an original model of cooperation with museums, centres and foundations of contemporary art, whose artistic directors lead the process by selecting artists-founders of the Ars Aevi Collection from all parts of the world. They then curate exhibitions of the selected artworks to form the Collection “nuclei”. From 1994, nuclei were formed in Milan, Prato, Venice, Ljubljana, Vienna, Bolognano, Istanbul, Podgorica and 13

Sarajevo. New nuclei of the Ars Aevi Collection will be created by partner institutions from Saint Etienne (2016), Zagreb (2016), Belgrade (2017), Athens (2018). Ars Aevi’s strategy is permanent expansion of its founding network.

Ars Aevi Collection is now on display at the Ars Aevi Art Depot in Sarajevo. It will remain there until the construction of the Ars Aevi Museum, the inauguration of which is foreseen for 2018, marking 25 years since the founding of the Ars Aevi Collection, and 100 years since the end of World War I, thus symbolically closing a century of wars in the .

Ars Aevi Project Museum of Contemporary Art Sarajevo is being carried out in cooperation with: City of Sarajevo Ministry of Culture and Sport Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina Ministry of Culture and Sport Bosnia and Herzegovina Ministry of Civil Affairs Bosnia and Herzegovina Ministry of Foreign Affairs Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Italy
