Einleitung Vor wenigen Jahren ist Heinrich Bullinger anlässlich seines 500. Ge- burtstages in zahlreichen wissenschaftlichen und populären Publika- tionen breit dargestellt und neu gewürdigt worden. Wer allerdings glaubt, die Quellen zu Leben und Werk von Zwinglis Nachfolger seien bereits umfassend ausgeschöpft, sieht sich bei näherer Betrach- tung rasch eines Besseren belehrt. Dass aber sogar ein so zentrales Selbstzeugnis wie Bullingers Privattestament bis heute unbeachtet blieb, überrascht selbst Experten. Umso mehr darf von einem Glücks- fall für die Bullinger-Forschung gesprochen werden, wenn dieses bedeutende Dokument nun im vollen Wortlaut zugänglich gemacht werden kann. Auf den ersten Blick mag eine solche Ankündigung überraschen, findet sich doch unter den bekanntesten Schriften Bullingers ein Text, der bereits in früheren Jahrhunderten als Testament des Reformators hoch geschätzt und in rund 30 Abschriften sowie mehreren Drucken in fast schon ehrfürchtiger Weise weitertradiert wurde. Es handelt sich um Bullingers Abschieds- und Mahnbrief an Bürgermeister und Räte der Stadt Zürich, den er 1572 entworfen und am 2. August 1575 ergänzt und neu datiert hatte und der sein politisches Vermächtnis enthält.1 Nachdem der hoch angesehene Kirchenleiter am 17. A Chronology of Martin Bucer (1491 – 1551)1551) 1491 Martin Bucer born on November 11th, at Schlettstadt in Alsace. 1506 Became a Dominican Monk, ordained to priesthood as a means toward an education. 1517 Matriculated at University of Heidelberg – admired Erasmas 1518 Attended Martin Luther’s Disputation at Heidelberg - won over to Luther’s views. 1521 Obtains a Papal dispensation from monastic vows, and becomes Court Chaplain for Frederick the Elector Palantine, then in 1522, secular Priest at Landstuhl where he married Elizabeth Sibereisen, a former nun. 1522 – 1523 Too refuge as chaplain of household of Count Sickengen at Weissenburg in Alsace. 1521 Matthew Zell (1477-1548) begins preaching reformation at Strassburg despite assassination attempts, to be soon followed by Wolfgang Capito (1523) and Caspar Hedio. 1523 Excommunicated, Martin Bucer comes to Stassburg - celebrated for its Gothic Cathedral and despite resistance by the bishop, is called as a priest to one of its churches. An Imperial free city, it was governed by a two councils, dominated by the guilds which gave it a stable government. In the reforms that followed not only the ecclesiastical, but also much of social life was altered. Bucer insisted that not only the church, but the whole of human life, individual and social must be ordered according to the will of God revealed in the Bible. Jacob Strum, a partisan took a lead in bringing about Strassburg’s reforms. 1527 Bucer published a book of theology that influenced John Calvin’s Institutes (1536). They had similar views on the Lord’s Prayer, Predestination, linking the keys of the kingdom to preaching the Word, and on the work of the Holy Spirit in bring men to salvation through the Word. -

He worked incessantly for the Protest- ant Cause in Germany from 1521 to 1549, putting the very heart of his life into the struggle. But there were some factions in German]' who did not appreciate this sacrifice, and he involuntarily became an exile. -

One would almost think so given the number of controversies that have marred the story of the modern Evan- gelical movement – Calvinists vs. Arminians, pre-millennialists vs. post, egalitarians vs. complementarians, and, of course, open theists vs. tradi- tional theists. A moment’s reflection, however, suggests that it is not a delight in polemics per se that has motivated all these folks through the ages and in our own times too but instead, ironically, something that they all have in common, viz., a commitment to truth. Evangelicals of all stripes believe that there is such a thing as truth in matters religious, and that it is important – so important that one is willing not only to con- tend for it in this life but also to stand upon it before the Lord in the next. For He who has revealed Himself as the Way, the Truth, and the Life calls upon all of us to be faithful to His truth. But if controversies among Evangelicals demonstrate one common commitment, can they reveal others? And if we are looking for the boun- daries of the Evangelical movement, can analysis of past debates reveal parameters within which combatants were operating? To be sure, the Scriptures must ultimately determine what it means to be “evangelical”; but perhaps historical analysis can highlight characteristics of our movement that we might otherwise miss. -

Abstract Early sixteenth century radical Anabaptism emanated in Switzerland during Huldrych Zwingli’s protest against the Roman Catholic Church. Much like Martin Luther, Zwingli founded his reform effort on the Bible being the final arbiter of the faith, sola scriptura, and the sufficiency of the shed blood of Christ plus nothing for eternal salvation, sola fide. Based on these principles both adopted the doctrine of the Priesthood of the Believer which recognized every believer’s Spirit empowered ability to read and interpret the Bible for themselves. These initial theological tenets resulted in the literal reading of the Bible and a very pragmatic Christian praxis including a Pauline pneumatology that recognized the efficacy of the manifestation of the charismata. Radical adherents of Zwingli rejected infant baptism as being totally unbiblical and insisted upon the rebaptism of adults, but only on a personal confession of faith, thus the term Anabaptist. -

Transue In his Introduction to this collection of original essays, Professor Kittelson notes that the university is one of the few institutions that medieval Latin Christendom contributed directly to modern Western civilization. An export wherever else it is found, it is unique to Western culture. All cultures, to be sure, have had their intellec tuals—those men and women whose task it has been to learn, to know, and to teach. But only in Latin Christendom were scholars—the company of masters and students—found gathered together into the universitas whose entire purpose was to develop and disseminate knowledge in a continu ous and systematic fashion with little regard for the consequences of their activities. The studies in this volume treat the history of the universities from the late Middle Ages through the Reformation; that is, from the time of their secure founding, through the period in which they were posed the challenges of humanism and con fessionalism, but before the explosion of knowl edge that marked the emergence of modern science and the advent of the Enlightenment. Thomas Maissen Thomas Erastus und der Erastianismus Der innerreformiene Streit um die Kirchendisziplin in der Kurpfalz Das Gemälde an der Stirnseite der Alten Aula der Universität Heidelberg zeigt unter den wichtigsten Gelehrten der Ruperto Carola den Mediziner Thomas Erastus. Einen nachwirkenden Namen über Heidelberg hinaus hat sich der Ge lehrte aus dem eidgenössischen Baden allerdings vor allem durch seine Teilnah me an theologischen Debatten geschaffen. Charles Gunnoe, der 2011 die gültige Monographie zu Erastus vorgelegt hat, argumentiert mit plausiblen Belegstellen dafür, dass der Arzt eine bedeutende Rolle bei der Niederschrift des Heidelberger Katechismus spielte1. Wie diese genau aussah, lässt sich in Ermangelung weiter führender Quellen allerdings nicht sagen. Eine enge Beziehung zu den bekann ten Verfassern des Katechismus existierte jedenfalls bestimmt und war für Eras tus auch biographisch von folgenschwerer Bedeutung. Er selbst brachte dies in einem Brief an Abraham Musculus 1577 rückblickend auf den Punkt: „Propter Excommunicationis deinde disputationem in maius odium amicorum veni, quam propter Dominicam Coenam in odium hostium venissem.,<2 Die Auseinanderset zung um das Abendmahl, also die Vorgeschichte des Heidelberger Katechismus, habe Erastus weniger Hass seiner lutherischen Feinde eingetragen als bei seinen Freunden der Streit um die Exkommunikation.
