Neal, Thesis Advisor Dr. Allen Anderson, Reader Dr. Andrea Bohlman, Reader © 2016 Mason Taylor Allen ALL RIGHTS RESERVED ii ABSTRACT Mason Taylor Allen: The Musical Features of 2015’s Top-Ranked Country Songs Under the direction of Dr. Jocelyn R. Neal The 2015 top-ten country songs analyzed in this study are characterized by the various formats of their song form, harmonies, and lyrics. This thesis presents a comprehensive study of the structure and narratives in sixty-seven songs that summarizes the distinctive features within those domains of contemporary commercial country music. A detailed description of the norm along with identifiable trends emerges. The song form that features most prominently in this repertory includes a verse-chorus-bridge form with three iterations of the chorus, an intro and outro section, and instrumental sections immediately following each chorus. The top-ten country songs have varying degrees of departure from this typical model. Primary features of the harmonies of these top songs include the frequent use of a double-tonic complex, the absence of a 5-1 authentic cadence, the same chord progression throughout the verse, chorus, and bridge, and the use of only two chords throughout the song. Lyrical analyses show that 2015 songs are continuing the traditional themes about romantic attraction, love, heartache, good times and partying, home, family, nostalgia, religion, and inspiration, within the context of small-town country life that this genre has used for years. -

New pulp-related books and periodicals available from Michael Chomko for July 2008 In just two short weeks, the Dayton Convention Center will be hosting Pulpcon 37. It will begin on Thursday, July 31 and run through Sunday, August 3. This year’s convention will focus on Jack Williamson and the 70 th anniversary of John Campbell’s ascension to the editorship of Astounding. There will be two guests-of-honor, science-fiction writers Larry Niven and Jerry Pournelle. Another highlight will be this year’s auction. It will feature many items from the estate of Ed Kessell, one of the guiding lights of the first Pulpcon. Included will be letters signed by Walter Gibson, E. Hoffmann Price, Walter Baumhofer, and others, as well as a wide variety of pulp magazines. For further information about Pulpcon 37, please visit the convention’s website at http://www.pulpcon.org/ Another highlight of Pulpcon is Tony Davis’ program book and fanzine, The Pulpster . As usual, I’ll be picking up copies of the issue for those of you who are unable to attend the convention. Revival In The Hebrides by Duncan Campbell Note: This is a transcript of a taped message on the Hebrides Revival which was preached by Duncan Campbell in 1968. The blanked words are those that were difficult to distinguish on the tape. There are two things that I would like to say in speaking about the revival in the Hebrides. First, I would like to make it perfectly clear that I did not bring revival to the Hebrides. It has grieved me beyond words to hear people talk and write about the man who brought revival to the Hebrides. My dear people, I didn't do that. Revival was there before I ever set foot on the island. It began in a gracious awareness of God sweeping through the parish of Barvas. Then I would like to make it perfectly clear what I understand of revival. When I speak of revival, I am not thinking of high-pressure evangelism. I am not thinking of crusades or of special efforts convened and organized by man. That is not in my mind at all. Revival is something altogether different from evangelism on its highest level. Revival is a moving of God in the community and suddenly the community becomes God conscious before a word is said by any man representing any special effort. Now I am sure that you will be interested to know how, in November 1949, this gracious movement began on the island of Lewis. Two old women, one of them 84 years of age and the other 82-one of the stone blind, were greatly burdened because of the appalling state of their own parish. -

OUP CORRECTED PROOF–FINAL, 29/4/2011, SPi Chapter 1 Voyages into space One of the first images we associate with science fiction is the spaceship; one of the first plot lines we expect is the journey into space, whose unlimited expanse licensed an outward reach of the novelists’ imagination. Historically, there was an easy continuity between sea journeys such as that in Thomas More’s Utopia or Gulliver’s Travels and space flights. Both are represented as voyages, and both are innately serial because the action takes place between long periods of transition. Indeed, in early science fiction the use of anti-gravity devices was self-evidently a pretext for rapidly covering the enormous distances of space. Cyrano de Bergerac’s twin narratives, The States and Empires of the Moon (1657) and The States and Empires of the Sun (unfinished at his death), both use a rocket journey from the Earth to set up their narratives, but it is no real concern of theirs to explain the technology of the rocket or the journeys, only the worlds at their destinations. In these cases and in many subsequent works, the space voyage functions as a device for estranging us from the familiar world, enabling external (and usually ironic) perspectives to be set up on Earth. Thus Bergerac’s traveller is forced in both cases to re-examine his presumptions about earthly values, and is considered by the Moon-dwellers to be little more than an ape.
