80 Years of Spanish Cinema Fall, 2013 Tuesday and Thursday, 9:00-10:20Am, Salomon 004
Brown University Department of Hispanic Studies HISP 1290J. Spain on Screen: 80 Years of Spanish Cinema Fall, 2013 Tuesday and Thursday, 9:00-10:20am, Salomon 004 Prof. Sarah Thomas 84 Prospect Street, #301 [email protected] Tel.: (401) 863-2915 Office hours: Thursdays, 11am-1pm Course description: Spain’s is one of the most dynamic and at the same time overlooked of European cinemas. In recent years, Spain has become more internationally visible on screen, especially thanks to filmmakers like Guillermo del Toro, Pedro Almodóvar, and Juan Antonio Bayona. But where does Spanish cinema come from? What themes arise time and again over the course of decades? And what – if anything – can Spain’s cinema tell us about the nation? Does cinema reflect a culture or serve to shape it? This course traces major historical and thematic developments in Spanish cinema from silent films of the 1930s to globalized commercial cinema of the 21st century. Focusing on issues such as landscape, history, memory, violence, sexuality, gender, and the politics of representation, this course will give students a solid training in film analysis and also provide a wide-ranging introduction to Spanish culture. By the end of the semester, students will have gained the skills to write and speak critically about film (in Spanish!), as well as a deeper understanding and appreciation of Spain’s culture, history, and cinema. Prerequisite: HISP 0730, 0740, or equivalent. Films, all written work and many readings are in Spanish. This is a writing-designated course (WRIT) so students should be prepared to craft essays through multiple drafts in workshops with their peers and consultation with the professor. -

A Talented Boy Called Roberto
ITALY A talented boy called Roberto Alessandro Gandolfi Vercelli Dance Academy, pupils listen during a lesson. Vercelli is a small town in Italy with a ballet academy that discovered the international star Roberto Bolle The most talented ballet dancers often come from the provinces. And, in the case of Italy, schools (there are more than 20,000) are genuine incubators for talent. They introduce children to music and rhythm, teaching them classical techniques and nudging the best – at the ages of 11 and 12 – towards the most prestigious academies. This is precisely what happened to Roberto Bolle, who went on to become the primo ballerino, or first dancer, at Milan’s La Scala in 1996, at the age of 20. Since then he has had leading roles with the Royal Ballet in London and has been the Principal Dancer with the American Ballet Theatre in New York, in addition to performing with the Bolshoi Theatre in Moscow and numerous other companies around the world. He is an international star and a UNICEF goodwill ambassador. And yet the seeds of this glorious career were sown in a small provincial town in Northern Italy in the 1980s when Roberto was still a child. The name of the town is Vercelli and it was here that a young Spanish ballerina, Pilar Sampietro, moved after falling in love with an Italian. She set up a ballet academy where her pupils included Roberto. Sadly, Pilar is no longer with us, having passed away in 2015, but the Vercelli Dance Academy lives on and it continues to produce talented youngsters. -

FORUM | ISSUE 13 Alexandra Heller-Nicholas 1 The Violation of Representation: Art, Argento and the Rape-Revenge Film Alexandra Heller-Nicholas Swinburne University of Technology Considering the moral controversies surrounding films such as I Spit on Your Grave (Meir Zarch, 1976) and Baise-Moi (Virginie Despentes and Coralie Trinh-Thi, 2000), the rape-revenge film is often typecast as gratuitous and regressive. But far from dismissing rape-revenge in her foundational book Men, Women and Chain Saws: Gender in the Modern Horror Film (1992), Carol J. Clover suggests that these movies permit unique insight into the representation of gendered bodies on screen. In Images of Rape: The ‘Heroic’ Tradition and Its Alternatives (1999), art historian Diane Wolfthal demonstrates that contradictory representations of sexual violence co-existed long before the advent of the cinematic image, and a closer analysis of films that fall into the rape-revenge category reveals that they too resist a singular classification. -

Viva Sanremo. -

Post-Cinematic Affect: on Grace Jones, Boarding Gate and Southland Tales
Film-Philosophy 14.1 2010 Post-Cinematic Affect: On Grace Jones, Boarding Gate and Southland Tales Steven Shaviro Wayne State University Introduction In this text, I look at three recent media productions – two films and a music video – that reflect, in particularly radical and cogent ways, upon the world we live in today. Olivier Assayas’ Boarding Gate (starring Asia Argento) and Richard Kelly’s Southland Tales (with Justin Timberlake, Dwayne Johnson, Seann William Scott, and Sarah Michelle Gellar) were both released in 2007. Nick Hooker’s music video for Grace Jones’s song ‘Corporate Cannibal’ was released (as was the song itself) in 2008. These works are quite different from one another, in form as well as content. ‘Corporate Cannibal’ is a digital production that has little in common with traditional film. Boarding Gate, on the other hand, is not a digital work; it is thoroughly cinematic, in terms both of technology, and of narrative development and character presentation. Southland Tales lies somewhat in between the other two. It is grounded in the formal techniques of television, video, and digital media, rather than those of film; but its grand ambitions are very much those of a big-screen movie. Nonetheless, despite their evident differences, all three of these works express, and exemplify, the ‘structure of feeling’ that I would like to call (for want of a better phrase) post-cinematic affect. Film-Philosophy | ISSN: 1466-4615 1 Film-Philosophy 14.1 2010 Why ‘post-cinematic’? Film gave way to television as a ‘cultural dominant’ a long time ago, in the mid-twentieth century; and television in turn has given way in recent years to computer- and network-based, and digitally generated, ‘new media.’ Film itself has not disappeared, of course; but filmmaking has been transformed, over the past two decades, from an analogue process to a heavily digitised one. -
