8 | EUROCHANNEL GUIDE | MAY 2015 | INTERVIEW WITH SAMUELE ROSSI (DIRECTOR)

How did you come up with the idea of the film and of intertwining three characters? The idea of The Way Back Home emerged when I got to Rome at the beginning of my career, when I was 23 years old. I couldn’t bear the distance from my family, their absence: my choice had completely changed my life and I had the need to express this kind of feeling. How can people overcome their pain? How can people go ahead, transforming pain into positive energy by processing grief? I thought to talk about this feeling through three different stories because pain is not the same for everyone: each person feels something different, so I needed to open the story through different perspectives, to make it closer to the people experiencing pain in three different stages of life. It’s a similar process that one ofmy favorite directors, Alejandro Gonzalez Iñárritu, used in his first movies. It’s a kind of cinema that I love. Life is a continual mix of meetings, people, stories, lives - a big twist - so I think that cinema has to represent that, its infinite mystery.

How much of your personal experiences are in this film and in the writer character? I didn’t live the same experiences of the movie, even if my dad experienced something similar to what happened to my young main character. I never felt that kind of pain, the pain of losing someone important. But I felt the absence in my life: when you can’t live the same life that you had until that moment and everything changes.

In your perspective, is The Way Back Home a film about reality and its hardships or about hope in life? Both, I guess. I think life is never the same. Life is so big, problematic, wonderful, and hard at the same time, that it’s impossible to think about life as something univocal and unambiguous. The beauty of life is that it is abstruse, that nobody can really understand all the greatness of all its mysteries. Our assignment is to go through life and try to realize its meanings. I think that my movie is about the beauty of life - and the reality of life. Life contains both pain and hope, and in many cases they are connected.

You also participated in two films previously aired on Eurochannel: Cosmonaut and The Passion. How enriching were these experiences to getting your first film done? Those were two really important experiences for me. In Cosmonaut, my first work as assistant director, I learned the first things about the set and especially the hard relationships that take place on it. The director is usually alone on the set and surrounded by a lot of people who want to know everything. So the director has to be able to endure, to answer to everyone without ever losing his perspective on the movie, to keep his vision without compromising it. During The Passion I had the chance to work with one of the most important Italian directors, . He has directed more than ten movies and I learned so much from working closely with him, especially the way to work with the technical cast and how to get what you really want.

EUROCHANNEL GUIDE | MAY 2015 | 9 Did you expect your “opera prima” to be as successful as it was in film festivals? The results were really surprising. The Way Back Home was an independent movie, made by a young troupe of important Italian actors. I’m sure our movie was really unexpected for the Italian cinema and I’m happy to have done something that nobody believed was possible. This is my biggest pride. Then we had a lot of awards and we did a lot of screenings in international and Italian festivals.

Are you working on any film projects at the moment? Can you tell us something about them? I made my first documentary last year, The Last Standing, which has already showed in Italian theaters and will also be screened on Eurochannel. Currently, I’m working on my second movie, an unexpected and surprising movie about the beauty and the power of childhood, and my next documentary, Love Biography. The next two years are going to be really important for me, my team and, my production company, Echivisivi.

EUROCHANNEL GUIDE | MAY 2015 | 13 INTERVIEW WITH Pierr Nosari (Director) How did you immerse yourself in the world of Subbuteo? It could seem strange but, actually, I’m not really passionate about Subbuteo. Obviously, I played it sometimes but just for fun. I was involved in this project of a documentary about this legendary game by Enrico Fontanelli, who had this idea for a long time. Enrico was a member of OfflagaDiscoPax, an indie band on which I based my previous documentary, and he knew my interest and passion for football. So he thought I could be the right director for this project because my contiguous position as a football lover would let me observe and then tell the argument from the right distance. I agreed with him and I accepted the work of directing this documentary immediately. It was the end of June of 2010.

Why do a documentary about this table game? Subbuteo was a very popular table game for a long time, in the 70s and 80s, but it had a «black period» where it seemed to be forgotten. But Enrico knew the game never disappeared and, in these last years, the passion for Subbuteo has risen again. So we wanted to explore this phenomenon and tell it, also because no documentary had ever been made before (except one, which was not focused on passion). It was not simple, because there are a lot of aspects to tell: history, passion, collections, and so on.

What was the reaction of people such as Stephen Moreton or former champion Andrea Piccaluga? Very good. We found a great reception in the ambience of the so-called Old Subbuteo (more passionate and nostalgic than agonistic), and all the people we met were glad to help us. In particular, Stephen Moreton was a real gentleman; we shot in the location of his Stadium of Fingers in the evening and then we even slept there. In the morning, he showed us the miniature of all of us that he made during the night and now the troupe of Subbuteopia is in his Stadium! The day with Andrea Piccaluga was also very pleasant. He works as an economics professor in Pisa now and he showed us the university where he teaches; we interviewed him on a terrace with the Tower of Pisa in the background on a wonderful sunny day.

Why do you think people get extremely passionate about this table game, to the point of building massive stadiums? This is a question that I wondered during the course of making the documentary. At the end, I think the answer is in the final words of Stephen Moreton at the end of Subbuteopia: “In a phrase, I suppose the concept of Subbuteo for me is the chance to be a ‘Natural Child’ and all of us yearn for that opportunity . . . When you just forget about everything else and you are totally absorbed with something that is to play a thing that brings pleasure and relaxation. . . . Whether you are 70, whether you are 6, you can be a ‘Natural Child.’”

Do you plan to do a second part, maybe filming fans of Subbuteo in other latitudes? In my original project, the documentary would have told the passion for Subbuteo in other countries, such as China and Argentina, but the economic resources didn’t permit it. Actually, I considered the possibility of making a volume 2 of Subbuteopia including those countries but, unfortunately, Enrico Fontanelli died in April 2014. This was a terrible blow for me, because Enrico was not only a colleague, but between us there was a deep friendship, which grew a lot while working on this documentary. He was like a brother to me. Without him, I think it would be difficult for me to resume a project that he created.

Are you working on any filming projects at the moment? Can you tell us something about them? In this period, I’m directing a theatrical show; I am doing corporate videos and working on the script of the feature film debut of a young Italian director based in London. But my next film project is a feature film. The script is ready and we are in the stage of fundraising, for a film like Steve McQueen’sShame . I hope to start shooting soon and finish the movie in the beginning of 2016.

14 | EUROCHANNEL GUIDE | MAY 2015 | The Legacy of Italian Football (Soccer) 3 Legendary Italian Players in History

Football (soccer) is one of the most popular sports across the world. With audiences of millions of viewers, the 2014 FIFA World Cup broke records on TV and social media. In Italy, football is the number one sport as the country has won the World Cup in 1934, 1938, 1982, and 2006. Known as the azzurri, their fame has crossed borders and their league is watched worldwide. Although there is no place for all the legends, this is Eurochannel’s list of the top three Italian football players in history.

Giuseppe Meazza Compared in his homeland to worldwide legend Pelé, Giuseppe Meazza left his mark in Italian football thanks to his scoring tally. In the traditionally defensive style of Italy, he made history by scoring 33 goals for his country in 53 appearances. Meazza, born in Milan, was the key member of Italy’s 1934 and 1938 World Cup winning teams, becoming part of the very exclusive club of players that have won football’s greatest trophy twice.

Giuseppe Meazza played for a great part of his career for Internazionale and AC Milan. The stadium the teams share, popularly known as the San Siro, is officially named Stadio Giuseppe Meazza.

Paolo Maldini Born in Milan in 1968, Paolo Maldini is a reference when it comes to football defending. He spent his entire career at AC Milan, which he led as captain. The player has in his personal showcase an outstanding record of seven Italian league titles, five Italian Super Cups, five UEFA Champions League titles, five UEFA Super Cups, and two Intercontinental Cups.

Maldini has a record appearance for AC Milan of 902 caps and holds the records for most appearances in Serie A (Italy’s first division) and in UEFA Club competitions. After his retirement after the 2008–09 season, his lifelong club, Milan, retired his number 3 shirt in his honor.

Roberto Baggio Everybody remembers the penalty shootout in the 1994 FIFA World cup final in the US when he took Italy’s last penalty and his kick went over the cross-bar, resulting in the Brazilians winning the title in one of the most upsetting moments in World Cup history.

Roberto Baggio, born in Caldogno in 1967, played for the most important Italian clubs including Fiorentina, Juventus, Milan, and Internazionale. Baggio played for Italy in 56 matches, scoring 27 goals, and is the fourth-highest goal-scorer for his national team. He starred in the Italian team that finished third in the 1990 FIFA World Cup, scoring twice. At the 1994 FIFA World Cup, he led Italy to the final, scoring five goals, received the World Cup Silver Ball, and was named in the World Cup All-Star Team.

The movie is enriched by the outstanding an emotional point of view? Don’t miss this hilarious acting of an Italian comedy legend, Diego Abatantuono, comedy to discover the answer!

INTERVIEW WITH Francesco Patierno (Director) How did you come up with the idea of this film? My producer had seen a movie called A Day Without a Mexican, the main idea behind the movie was that for one day all the Mexicans in Los Angeles would disappear, causing difficulties to the economic mechanism of the city. So he asked me if it would be possible to use this idea - after having paid the rights of it - to produce a movie in Italy. I thought about the great potential of the idea, however I also thought that a genius idea was just not enough to make a movie so something came up to my mind. Somewhere in my PC I had saved a video with a speech of a politician from the north talking about immigration in television. His words were so dreadful and painfully funny. This man gave me the inspiration on how to develop the producer’s idea.

Why did you decide to do a film about migration and the imaginary disappearance of them? I wanted to narrate the deceiving behavior that sometimes Italians have towards foreign people. I was not interested in showing that immigrants are important for the economy, and that without them we will surely have problems, I wanted to reflect about another matter: would we also emotionally miss them if they would suddenly disappear?

Do you think this film helped in terms of the acceptance of immigrants in Italy? I’m sure that those who saw the movie have reflected a lot about the provocation moved by this story, and that is already a lot for me and a movie.

How was the experience working with Diego Abatantuono, a legend of Italian comedy? It was great. I was, and still am, his great fan. I wrote the main character’s role thinking about him and when he gave his ok I couldn’t believe it. It took me a bit of time during the preparation to move from a fun role to the director’s one.

Is there any funny or memorable anecdote you remember from the filming days? I remember that one night after filming, there were Diego Abatantuono, Valerio Mastrandrea, and I in thecar looking for a restaurant. At a certain point we got lost and Diego turned on a satnav that spoke with of the «terruncello», the most successful character he had ever performed. It was a man that spoke a funny dialect from the south of Italy. We spent hours laughing so hard until we were in tears!

Did you receive any criticism for portraying a possible scenario of a town without immigrants? I was surely expecting some critics because I didn’t follow a political approach to migration.

Are you working on any filming projects at the moment? Can you tell us something about them? Yes, I’m currently working on a very important documentary movie inspired by Naples ‘44, a book of Norman Lewis. It is a very important project for me and I hope to finish it by June. Around a decade later, during his 30s, Guerra moved to Rome and to then become a school teacher. There, he met political filmmaker Petri, the assistant to , and started to collaborate in distinct productions during the late 1950s and early 1960s.

Guerra went on to collaborate with and Vittorio de Sica. He co-authored Petri’s first two films, both small jewels, L’Assassino (The Assassin, 1961), and I Giorni Contati (Counted Days, 1962), and also worked on the script for Vittorio De Sica’s Marriage Italian Style (1964), with a mind-blowing and inspiring Sophia Loren in the leading role. In the following decade, he wrote three films with Federico Fellini, including (1973), which drew on their shared memories of growing up in the Emilia- Romagna region.

Famous for his perfectionism, attention to detail, and provoking plots, Stanley Kubrick demanded the highest standards in every of his films regarding technique and execution. Although some of his most successful works didn’t generate much controversy, some of his classics did. Celebrating the airing of this episode of A Film and its Era dedicated to one of his masterpieces, Eurochannel has selected Stanley Kubrick’s most scandalous productions.

A Clockwork Orange Conceived as a morbid and sensational look into society’s obsession with violence and moral choice, A Clockwork Orange is Kubrick’s masterpiece. Based on Anthony Burgess’s 1962 book of the same name, the movie tells the story of Alex, a charismatic, sociopathic delinquent whose interests include classical music, rape, and ultra-violence. The film chronicles the horrific crime spree of his gang, his capture, and attempted rehabilitation via controversial psychological conditioning. Although passed uncut for UK cinemas in December 1971, British authorities considered the sexual violence in the film too extreme. In March 1972, during the trial of a fourteen-year-old male accused of the manslaughter of a classmate, the prosecutor referred to A Clockwork Orange, suggesting that the film had a macabre relevance to the case.
