At first "La Contadora de Peliculas" was optioned by producer Vincent Juillerat (Selenium Films), who contacted Walter Salles to adapt it to the screen. "I was immediately touched by its profound humanity, by the innate capacity to blend humor and drama, and, of course, by its utter passion for film", says Salles. After a long writing process by Walter Salles, finally Isabel Coixet takes over the project, coadapt the book and will shoot the film. The Spanish Director, winner of three Goyas this year including the best film, also fell in love with the book and screenplay. Isabel Coixet has the sensitivity, has the humor and the experience required by this project. Art, or in this case cinema, which, lived as Maria Margarita lives, makes it possible to see life differently is one of the recurring themes in the work of the Spanish director. We hope that Isabel Coixet will make a great movie for all movie lovers. The production will be leading by the producer Vincent Juillerat, through his french company Selenium Films, by Adolfo Blanco of A Contracorriente films in Barcelona, and by Andres Mardones Altiro Films in Chile. THE DIRECTOR. - Isabel Coixet. Born in Barcelona, at the age of just 27 she premièred her first feature film, “Demasiado viejo para morir joven”. She moved to the U.S. where she filmed her next film, Things I Never Told You (1996). Three years later she premièred A los que aman and, in 2003, My Life Without Me, which won the Goya Award for Best Adapted Screenplay. She gained her first international great public success with this film. She then won four Goyas for The Secret Life of Words (2005). On 2018, Feb. 4, Isabel Coixet became the only women to have won two Spanish Academy Best Picture Goyas. She achieved that with “The Bookshop,” starring Emily Mortimer, Patricia Clarkson and Bill Nighy, premièred at a special gala at the Berlinale 2018 and grossed more than 10 million USD worldwide. Her new film Elisa y Marcela (2019) has become the first-time selection of a Netflix film to compete for the Golden Bear I this years’s Berlinale. THE SCREENPLAYERS. - Walter Salles. Walter Moreira Salles Junior is a celebrated film director all across the world. He has made more than twenty excellent movies and some of the most acclaimed of these are the Central Station and the The Motorcycle Diaries. Central Station had been nominated in the Academy Awards of 1998 while The Motorcycle Diaries has won the hearts of critics and regular film lovers with the brilliant portrayal of the life of Che Guevera. The latest production of the gifted director is a documentary on the Chinese screenwriter and director Jia Zhang-ke, titled as "Jia Zhang-ke, A Guy from Fenyang". And Isabel Coixet. THE AUTHOR - Hernán Rivera Letelier. He grew up and worked for many years in the saltpeter mines of Atacama, in northern Chile. His novel La reina cantaba rancheras (Queen Isabel Sang Rancheras) catapulted him to fame, turning into one of the most widespread literary works in recent Chilean fiction. Two years later, he won the National Book Award again and won the Alfaguara Novel Prize in 2010, one of the most prestigious prize in Spanish language. His most well-known novel La contadora de películas (The Movie-teller) has been translated into 19 languages. MOTIVATION OF THE AUTHOR. There are stories that touch you and move you and even excite you, but you do not feel them as your own: they do not manage to be part of your personal imaginary, that will make you fight against all odds by turning them into a film. There are stories that touch you, move you, excite you and also - the icing on the cake - touch your heart in a unique way: as if they had been written for you, as if the author knew you and you recognized yourself in him/her: that It will make you move sea and mountain to convey them on screen. "The film teller" belongs to this second category. And telling and bringing this sublime story to the public has already become an obsession for me. I know that anyone who loves the cinema, the narrative, the stories that one tells around a bonfire, watching the dance of the flames, will love this movie. Thank you. 1 The Passion of Marta Díaz de Lope Díaz: A Conversation with the Filmmaker In her directorial debut, Ronda native Marta Díaz de Lope Díaz takes inspiration from the cartography of her origin for her filmic vision. Her cultural roots anchor her life and filmography, that she has been perfecting over the years of her study and teaching at the ESCAC film school in Barcelona. Her first feature-length film, Mi querida cofradía (Hopelessly Devout), clearly reflects this influence since it drinks and revels in the most traditional celebration of her hometown: Holy Week. In recent years, Spain has become more internationally visible on screen, especially thanks to filmmakers like Guillermo del Toro, Pedro Almodóvar, and Juan Antonio Bayona. But where does Spanish cinema come from? What themes arise time and again over the course of decades? And what – if anything – can Spain’s cinema tell us about the nation? Does cinema reflect a culture or serve to shape it? This course traces major historical and thematic developments in Spanish cinema from silent films of the 1930s to globalized commercial cinema of the 21st century. Focusing on issues such as landscape, history, memory, violence, sexuality, gender, and the politics of representation, this course will give students a solid training in film analysis and also provide a wide-ranging introduction to Spanish culture.     Introduction 1 Iciar Bollaín (left) rehearsing Mataharis Iciar Bollaín (Madrid, 1967), actress, scriptwriter, director and producer, is one of the most striking figures currently working in the Spanish cinema, and the first Spanish woman filmmaker to make the Oscars shortlist (2010). She has performed in key films directed by, among others, Víctor Erice, José Luis Borau, Felipe Vega and Ken Loach. Starting out as assistant director and co­scriptwriter, she has Santaolalla_Bollain.indd 1 04/04/2012 15:38 2 The cinema of Iciar Bollaín gone on to make four short films and five feature films to date, all but one scripted or co­scripted by her. She is also one of the founding members of Producciones La Iguana S. L., a film production company in existence since 1991. Her work raises questions about authorship, female agency and the mediation in film of social issues. It also highlights the tensions between creative and industrial priori­ ties in the cinema, and national and transnational allegiances, while prompting reflection on the contemporary relevance of cinéma engagé. Bollaín’s contribution to Spanish cinema has been acknowledged both by film­goers and the industry. Te doy mis ojos (Take My Eyes, 2003) is one of a handful of Spanish films seen by over one million spectators, and was the first film made by a woman ever to receive a Best Film Goya Award (Spanish Goya­equivalent) from the Academia de las Artes y las Ciencias Cinematográficas de España (Spanish Film Academy).1 Recognition has also come through her election to the Executive Committee of the College of Directors and Scriptwriters of the SGAE (Sociedad General de Autores y Editores) in July 2007, and to the Vice­Presidency of the Spanish Film Academy in June 2009.2 The varied range of Bollaín’s contribution to Spanish cinema, and the extent to which she is directly involved in key roles associated with filmmaking, inevitably lead to speculation on the extent to which she may be regarded as an auteur.

Hanna (Sarah Polley) är ett mysterium för omgivningen. Hon är en av fabrikens flitigaste arbetare, tar varken ut semester eller sjukdagar, men är helt isolerad från sina arbetskamrater. Till slut får hon order av chefen att ta ut lite semester. Hon tar bussen till kusten där hon redan första kvällen av en händelse får jobb på en oljeplattform där det har varit en stor olycka. Hanna är sjuksköterska och ska ta hand om den svårt skadade Josef (Tim Robbins). Olyckan har gjort honom tillfälligt blind och han är i desperat behov av att ha någon att prata med. Hanna däremot är lika inbunden som vanligt. Men mellan Hanna och Josef uppstår en försiktig kärlek och långsamt börjar Hanna öppna upp sig och ge ord till det fruktansvärda trauma hon bär på. THE SECRET LIFE OF WORDS vann det spanska filmpriset GOYA för bästa film 2006. I birollerna medverkar bland annat Javier Cámara och Leonor Watling, som vi bland annat sett i TALA MED HENNE i Sverige.. Filmen är tillägnad danskan Inge Genefke, som under trettio års tid varit en av frontfigurerna i kampen mot tortyr. Inge Genefke är verksam inom organisationen International Rehabilitation Council for Torture Victims (IRCT, www.irct.org).
