Rædende Iudithðe: The Heroic, Mythological and Christian Elements in the Old English Poem Judith ______________________ A Thesis Presented to The Faculty and the Honors Program Of the University of San Diego ______________________ By Jude Caywood Interdisciplinary Humanities 2015 Caywood 2 Judith is a character born from the complex multicultural forces that shaped Anglo-Saxon society, existing liminally between the mythological, the heroic and the Christian. Simultaneously Germanic warrior, pagan demi-goddess or supernatural figure, and Christian saint, Judith arbitrates amongst the seemingly incompatible forces that shaped the poet’s world, allowing the poem to serve as an important site for the making of a new Anglo-Saxon identity, one which would eventually come to be the united English identity. She becomes a single figure who is able to reconcile these opposing forces within herself and thereby does important cultural work for the world for which the poem was written. -

In it, I study the hagiographies written about the royal female saints of Ely by the Flemish monk Goscelin of Saint-Bertin in the late eleventh century as a form of postcolonial literature and memory creation. Goscelin was a renowned writer of Anglo-Saxon saints’ lives. Through his hagiographies he not only created images of England’s Christian past that emphasized its pious, sophisticated rulers and close ties to the papacy, he engaged in political commentary and criticism. -

This article situates the dual translation within the broader context of ninth- and tenth-century literary culture, challenging the received view of the two versions as separate projects and arguing instead that the Old English Boethius was conceived and received as a vernacular opus geminatum, or ‘twinned work’. While the opus geminatum and the prosimetrum are generally thought to maintain distinct generic identities, this case study allows for a more capacious understanding of both modes, which I demonstrate were inescapably linked in Anglo-Saxon circles – and which were shaped by a broader aesthetic of prose-verse mixture. Bede’s Historia ecclesiastica gentis Anglorum contains what is undoubtedly the most famous surviving story of an Anglo-Saxon poet, the illiterate cowherd Cædmon, whose divine inspiration is supposed to have initiated a new strain of vernacular, Christian poetry, and who continues to provoke an unending series of questions about Anglo-Saxon poetic communities.1 But Bede’s history also contains a less famous anecdote about a poet, just as illuminating for Anglo-Saxon conceptions of genre and translation. Memorial College of Education Barsana Mor Birhi Kalan Charkhi Dadri Introduction Old English literature (sometimes referred to as Anglo-Saxon literature) encompasses literature written in Old English (also called Anglo-Saxon) in Anglo-Saxon England from the 7th century to the decades after the Norman Conquest of 1066. "Cædmon's Hymn", composed in the 7th century according to Bede, is often considered the oldest extant poem in English, whereas the later poem, The Grave is one of the final poems written in Old English, and presents a transitional text between Old and Middle English.[1] Likewise, the Peterborough Chronicle continues until the 12th century. The poem Beowulf, which often begins the traditional canon of English literature, is the most famous work of Old English literature. The Anglo-Saxon Chronicle has also proven significant for historical study, preserving a chronology of early English history.Alexander Souter names the commentary on Paul's epistles by Pelagius "the earliest extant work by a British author".[2][3] In descending order of quantity, Old English literature consists of: sermons and saints' lives, biblical translations; translated Latin works of the early Church Fathers; Anglo-Saxon chronicles and narrative history works; laws, wills and other legal works; practical works ongrammar, medicine, geography; and poetry.[4] In all there are over 400 survivingmanuscripts from the period, of which about 189 are considered "major".[5] Besides Old English literature, Anglo-Saxons wrote a number of Anglo-Latin works. -

Reading Beowulf Now and Then
READING BEOWULF NOW AND THEN Beowulf is undoubtedly one of the most famous English poems, if not, perhaps, one of the most read. Perhaps it was ever thus: a recent commentator observes that more people read Beowulf now than can ever in the Anglo-Saxon period have had access to the fire-damaged ruin that the sole manuscript-witness remains (Anlezark 2003: 320). Moreover, Beowulf’s begrudged place at the head of the canon of English literature looks increasingly precarious, constantly threatened as a result of its difficulty and strangeness, and the fact that throughout its 3,182 lines not a single Englishman is mentioned, not a single place in England is described, and for many English Majors in universities throughout the world who are forced to read the stuff (often against their will), the language of the poem seems barely English at all.1 Modern readers have the “benefit” of a bewildering myriad of translations and interpretations, including that of Seamus Heaney (2000),2 as well as comic-books, cartoons, and several versions for the big screen,3 but the purpose of this paper is rather to survey a limited range of readers and readings from the past thousand years or so, to see how far such earlier efforts help or hinder us in our interpretations of Beowulf today. In focusing in turn on the problems faced by the scribes who wrote the single surviving manuscript, on the inaccuracies of the earliest modern edition, as well as on the poorly regarded translation of the text made by 1 Typical is the tongue-in-cheek diatribe by Brigid Brophy that Beowulf is “Boring and unattractive as a story, pointlessly bloodthirsty” (1967: 1); see further Orchard 2003: 238–64, who argues that the multiplicity of perspectives offered by modern interpreters is implicit in the original text. -

The Beowulf manuscript reconsidered: Reading Beowulf in late Anglo-Saxon England Leonie Viljoen Department of English School of Languages & Literature University of South Africa PRETORIA E-mail: [email protected] Abstract The Beowulf manuscript reconsidered: Reading Beowulf in late Anglo- Saxon England This article defines a hypothetical late Anglo-Saxon audience: a multi-layer- ed Christian community with competing ideologies, dialects and mythologies. It discusses how that audience might have received the Anglo-Saxon poem Beowulf. The immediate textual context of the poem constitutes an intertextual microcosm for Beowulf. The five texts in the codex provide interesting clues to the common concerns, conflicts and interests of its audience. The organizing principle for the grouping of this disparate mixture of Christian and secular texts with Beowulf was not a sense of canonicity or the collating of monuments with an aesthetic autonomy from cultural conditions or social production. They were part of the so-called “popular culture” and provide one key to the “meanings” that interested the late Anglo-Saxon audience, who would delight in the poet=s alliteration, rhythms, word-play, irony and understatement, descriptions, aphorisms and evocation of loss and transience. The poem provided cultural, historical and spiritual data and evoked a debate about pertinent moral issues. The monsters, for instance, are symbolic of problems of identity construction and establish a polarity between “us” and the “Other”=, but at the same time question such binary thinking. Finally, the poem works towards an audience identity whose values emerge from the struggle within the poem and therefore also encompass the monstrous, the potentially disruptive, the darkness within B that which the poem attempts to repress.
