A.M.D.G. C.S.S.M.L. Historiografia. 3. Império romano. 4. Etnia. 5. Cultura. 6. Semiótica. ABSTRACT Research on the idea of Romanism in the context of Roman imperial expansion (I BC - II AD), understood in the sense of ethnic identity, from the perspective of anthropology of Fredrik Barth, as built in Latin historiography from the texts of Sallust and Tacitus and tests of Cicero in this area and thematic. The answers to the dilemmas of identity caused by inserting hegemonic Rome in a globalized Mediterranean (world-system?) and the annexation of land in norther European grounded, on one hand, in a flexible and dynamic to see themselves as a people and, second, in the pragmatic and open manner practiced in relation to citizenship. Such practices, however, have never been peaceful, always colliding into tough social groups who fought to keep them restricted to the benefits of their condition and status. The analysis thus developed, leading to a revisitation and reinterpretation of Romanism, and even the notion mos maiorum, concluding it as plural and conflictive, even among central elites, far from any canonicity. History itself as a genre, or "constellation of genres" (based on studies of Eugen Cizek) fits into these political-cultural dilemmas. The larger picture interpretative research is given by the passage of civic structures (or poliades) from Rome to the cosmopolis. In the analysis of the corpus passages detached the methodology was applied the semiotic square developed by Algirdas J. Greimas. Keywords: 1. Roman History (Italy). 2. Historiography. 3. Roman Empire. 4. Ethny. 5. Culture. 6. Semiotics. Orbis Terrarum #118 TITLE: Orbis Terrarum DATE: A.D. 20 AUTHOR: Marcus Vipsanius Agrippa DESCRIPTION: The profound difference between the Roman and the Greek mind is illustrated with peculiar clarity in their maps. The Romans were indifferent to mathematical geography, with its system of latitudes and longitudes, its astronomical measurements, and its problem of projections. What they wanted was a practical map to be used for military and administrative purposes. Disregarding the elaborate projections of the Greeks, they reverted to the old disk map of the Ionian geographers as being better adapted to their purposes. Within this round frame the Roman cartographers placed the Orbis Terrarum, the circuit of the world. There are only scanty records of Roman maps of the Republic. The earliest of which we hear, the Sardinia map of 174 B.C., clearly had a strong pictorial element. But there is some evidence that, as we should expect from a land-based and, at that time, well advanced agricultural people, subsequent mapping development before Julius Caesar was dominated by land survey; the earliest recorded Roman survey map is as early as 167-164 B.C. If land survey did play such an important part, then these plans, being based on centuriation requirements and therefore square or rectangular, may have influenced the shape of smaller-scale maps. This shape was also one that suited the Roman habit of placing a large map on a wall of a temple or colonnade. Varro (116-27 B.C.) in his De re rustica, published in 37 B.C., introduces the speakers meeting at the temple of Mother Earth [Tellus] as they look at Italiam pictam [Italy painted].

  • Four Surveyors of Caesar: Mapping the World! 1
Four Surveyors of Caesar: Mapping the World! 1 John F. BROCK, Australia Keywords: Julius Caesar, Augustus Caesar, the four surveyors, the survey, the map, the Mappa Mundi SUMMARY “Rome was not built in a day!” This well cited saying could be equally applied to the survey of Rome and its many outskirts of centuriations radiating from the nucleus of the central square. This being so it was clearly to take many years in the field by the four Greek Surveyors charged by Julius Caesar to chart the entire known world. Through exhilarating research I can tell you how long this task took as well as the names of the surveyors who carried out the survey plus the coordinator commissioned with the duty by Octavian himself ! The story behind the Survey of the World varies between scholars but one version of the tale is brilliantly retold in text and images in spectacular fashion on the legendary Hereford Mappa Mundi (dated to c. 1290-1300). All references credit Julius Caesar with making the initial decree to make a survey of the whole of the Roman World in conjunction with his closest consort Marc Antony sometime around the year 45-44 BC. Knowing that in March of 44 BC (at the Ides of March to be precise) he was assassinated it is possible that a written order could have been delivered by the adopted son of Julius Caesar, Octavian, to the surveyors to confirm his concurrence with the original action or the representation of this alleged royal order on the medieval map could be merely the whim of its creator.

  • Cgpl2—MARCUS VIPSANIUS AGRIPPA—HIS MAP GAIUS PLINIUS SECUNDUS—HIS TEXT
cgPl2—MARCUS VIPSANIUS AGRIPPA—HIS MAP GAIUS PLINIUS SECUNDUS—HIS TEXT ABSTRACT Marcus Vipsanius Agrippa was tasked with the production of a map, not a map of the Roman Empire c20BCE, but a map of the whole known world. Pliny the Elder wrote his reference work, “Natural History” c77CE, well after the death of Agrippa in 12BCE. But, Pliny obviously viewed the finished map which had been erected or displayed in a public area, the Porticus Vipsania. The source of the geographical data within Pliny’s text is mostly attributed to Agrippa and appears to come from the commentary written to accompany the world map. Thus by extracting the data attributable to Agrippa for geographical, and then the astronomical/astrological facts contained within Pliny’s text, we can unravel the dubious extant reconstructions of the past and indicate hitherto un-researched facets of the text. This has enabled a new interpretation of those facts to be made, and thus the possibility to describe and draw a map more akin to the original by Agrippa. The previous text, cgPl1, contains much of the research for this text. It has not been repeated, merely referenced. This paper contains 17 A4 pages of text and 24 A4 full colour diagrams. cgPl2—MARCUS VIPSANIUS AGRIPPA—HIS MAP GAIUS PLINIUS SECUNDUS—HIS TEXT SYNOPSIS The text within Pliny’s “Natural History”, Book 6, Chapter 39, entitled”Divisions of the earth into Parallels and Shadows of equal length,” discusses the lines or segments which divide the world; Roman Circles and Greek Parallels. However, at first glance the Latitudes and Climates of equinoctial hours do not agree, nor are they regular in their subdivision, but a mis-match of alignments.

With the studies of D. Mattingly (MATTINGLY 2011) and C. Howgego (HOWGEGO 2005), attention has shifted from the idea of Romanization as a top-down phenomenon to a much more articulated process, which could be interpreted according the model proposed by GOSDEN 2004 of ‘middle ground imperialism’, in which the element of cultural interaction between the conquering power and the conquered populations was central and led to the creation of locally hybrid cultural forms. This dissertation analyzes the ways in which local cultures and identities interacted with Roman ones in the years between Attalus III’s testament and the end of the Flavian age. I chose to focus my research on these centuries as they include four key moments for the Provincia Asia: the moment of its institution in 129/6 BC with

In the history of the foundation of the Roman Empire the figure of Augustus is dominant. About him moye various personalities, interesting not only in themselves, but also because they help to throw light upon the elusive character of the leading personality. Of those who believed in the monarchy because Augustus was the monarch the most important are Agrippa and Maecenas, both men of extraordinary capabilities. Yet, while the name of Maecenas, the dulce praesidium of the· great poets of the Augustan Age, has become proverbial for literary patronage, the important contributions of Agrippa to the new political and social order which rose out of the chaos of the civil wars of the last century of ·the Republic and with which the name of . Augustus is associated have rarely received the attention which they just~y merit. The first biography of Marcus Agrippa based upon modern methods of scholarship was written by Frandsen,1 a sound, scholarly piece of work, if one takes into consideration the few instruments of research available to the scholar a hundred years ago.2 No advance was made by the study of Motte, which, while it has the merit of correcting Frandsen's fault of treating the life of his subject, not chronologically, but under the various phases of his career, is characterized by the inclusion of much irrelevant matter and by a lackof historical breadth.3 The 1The previous bibliography is given by Motte, VIII.
