Seurattuani ennen päätöstäni yliopiston järjestämiä seminaareja, väitös- tilaisuuksia ja tutustuttuani julkaisuihin vakuutuin opetuksen ja tutkimuksen korkeasta tasosta. Su- kuperimältäni olen vankasti peräpohjalainen, joten henkinen paluu esivanhempien kotiseudulle oli merkittävä kokemus. Lapin yliopiston kokeneista professoreista ja dosenteista sain koottua parhaan mahdollisen tuutor- joukon. Kulttuurihistorian professori Marja Tuominen ohjasi tutkimukseni päälinjoja vankalla koke- muksella ja näkemyksellä, kuvataiteen professori Juhani Tuominen toimi taiteellisen ilmaisun men- torina ja keskustelukumppanina, ja dosentti Jyrki Siukonen opasti sekä tutkimuksen ja kirjoittamisen että kuvien tekemisen monimutkaisilla poluilla. Tutkintoon liittyviä teoreettisia opintoja suoritin myös Tampereen avoimessa yliopistossa. Histo- rian aineopintojen Omfalos-tutkielman laadin dosentti Aino Katermaan huolellisessa opastuksessa. Helsingin yliopiston Kreikan kielen ja kirjallisuuden professori Mika Kajava toimi tutkimustekstieni esilukijana ja tärkeänä asiantuntijana pienissä ja suurissa kysymyksissä. Olen kiitollinen kaikille men- toreilleni viisaista kritiikeistä, merkittävistä neuvoista ja innostavasta opastuksesta. Marja Tuomisen tutkimusseminaariryhmän kanssaopiskelijoilta opin paljon vuosien varrella. Osal- la meistä yhteinen matka on kulkenut pienteollisuustalon luentosaleista ja taiteiden tiedekunnan hen- kilökunnan keittiöstä uuden tiedekuntarakennuksen seminaarihuoneiden kautta yliopiston vieras- saunan viihtyisään kokoustilaan. Jatko-opiskelijoiden välillä käydyt keskustelut, kriittisen kannustava palaute sekä heidän omat tutkimuksensa ja taideteoksensa avasivat hedelmällisiä näkökulmia omaan tutkimiseen ja tekemiseen. Olen luku- ja kirjoittamishäiriöinen toimija ja kielitaitoni rajoittuu vain varsin hyvään englannin- kielen lukutaitoon. Tämän takia olen käyttänyt runsaasti asiantuntijapalveluita käännöksissä ja oiko- luvussa. Klassillisessa kreikankielessä avustajina ovat toimineet FT Marke Ahonen, latinankielessä dosentti Juhani Sarsila ja venäjänkielessä tutkija Tapani Laine. Fil. yo. Silja Aronpuro käänsi käyttöö- ni keskeisiä tutkimustekstejä italiankielestä. HuK Anne Paldanius auttoi tutkimuksen alkuvaiheessa kääntämällä antiikin alkuperäistekstien englanninkielisiä käännöksiä suomeksi. Myöhemmässä vai- heessa hän myös teki tekstieni alustavan oikoluvun. Kiitän tutkimukseni esitarkastajia dosentti Katariina Mustakalliota ja dosentti Kari Kotkavaaraa huolellisista, asiantuntevista ja ymmärtäväisistä lausunnoista sekä opinnäytenäyttelyiden esitarkastajia kuvataiteilija, KuT Jan Kenneth Weckmania ja kuvataiteilija Carolus Enckelliä paneutuvista ja raken- tavista tarkastuslausunnoista. Olen ilahtunut ja tyytyväinen että Katariina Mustakallio ja Jan Kenneth Weckman suostuivat vastaväittäjiksi. Tutkimus ja taiteellinen työskentely vaati useita opintomatkoja ulkomaille. Tein myös lukuisia kent- tätutkimusmatkoja eri kohteisiin. Tutkimustyötä tein kuukausien ajan useaan otteeseen tieteellisissä kirjastoissa Roomassa, Ateenassa ja Istanbulissa vuosina 2005–2011. Tampereen yliopiston kirjaston kaukolainaustoimintoja käytin runsaasti tutkimuksen loppuvaiheessa. Olen kiitollinen kirjastojen henkilökunnille asiantuntevista opastuksista. Taiteellista työskentelyä ja väitöstutkimusta ovat tukeneet seuraavat tahot: Valtion taiteen keskus- toimikunta (5-vuotinen taiteilija-apuraha), Koneen säätiö (2-vuotinen tutkija-apuraha), Tampereen kaupunki, Niilo Helanderin säätiö ja Lapin yliopisto. Jenny ja Antti Wihurin rahaston ja Lapin yliopis- ton vierailevana taiteilijana olin keväällä 2007. Työskentelin Koneen säätiön residenssissä Saaren kar- tanossa kolmen kuukauden ajan tutkijana (2010 & 2011). Väitöskirjani painokustannuksia on tukenut Lapin yliopiston taiteiden tiedekunta. Graafi nen suunnittelija Mako Niemelä on suunnitellut kirjan taiton ja ulkoasun. Työskentely hänen kanssaan on sujunut luovassa hengessä. Puolisoni taidegraafi kko Anna Alapuro on ollut suuri henkinen ja käytännöllinen tukija tässä pro- jektissa. Hän on toiminut matkakumppanina, autokuskina, kielenkääntäjänä ja oikolukijana. Molem- mat tyttäreni Marja ja Aini ovat auttaneet usein taideteosteni viimeistelyprosessissa. Äidiltäni Liisa Väätiltä (os. Turpeenniemi), pukuompelijalta ja käsityön taitajalta, olen perinyt osan hänen väri- ja sommittelusilmästään. Isääni metsäteknikko Lauri Väättiä (1926–2010) ja äitiäni haluan kiittää sekä henkisestä että taloudellisesta tuesta tässäkin projektissa. Tämä väitöskirja on omistettu edesmenneelle isälleni. Hän totesi vielä sairasvuoteelta järkevät sanat: Kirjoita selvää tekstiä. Väitöstyöni päämotto, Delfoin Apollonin temppelin seinäkirjoitus gnothi sauton, joka voidaan kään- tää ja tulkita ajatuksella, tunne itsesi, on tullut konkreettisesti vastaan tämän tutkimusurakan aikana. Ku- vataiteilijat peilaavatkin usein itseään taideteoksissaan, varmaan myös tutkijat tutkimuksissaan. Filoso- fi sen seinäkirjoituksen toinen merkitystulkinta, tunne rajasi, on viisas ajatus. Omien rajojen tunteminen ja haastava tutkimuskenttä opettaa ja kehittää innokasta tutkijaa. Olen noudattanut optimistisesti sekä tutkimisessa että kuvien tekemisessä taidemaalari Jan van Eyckin tunnuslausetta: Niin hyvin kuin pystyn. Tutkimusmatkani tuotti enemmän uusia näkökulmia ja lisäkysymyksiä kuin uutta tietoa. Kuvatai- teilijat harvoin väittävät mitään, mutta silti uskon että tutkimus ja kuvataide täydentävät toisiaan tuot- tamalla tietoa maailmasta. Tämä tutkimus on kasvanut pitkäaikaisesta rakkaudesta historiaan, maail- mannapoihin, vanhoihin karttoihin ja kuvataiteen perinteeseen sekä käsityöläisyyteen. Arkkitehti Vit- ruviuksen sanoin valitan kirjani kömpelöä kielenkäyttöä, koska olen alkuaan toisen alan ammattimies. Seuraavilla sivuilla ja kappaleissa toimin tämän henkisen matkakirjan innokkaana oppaana, nykyajan periegeettinä. Introduction The Great Palace of the Byzantine Emperors in Constantinople was the ceremonial heart of the Byzantine Empire for a millennium, and occupied a site that is now recognized as a World Heritage precinct [Fig. 1].1 The Great Palace has a high cultural and historical significance, exerting a significant influence on both Western European and Levantine palatine architecture, and forming a link between Imperial Roman and medieval palaces. It is, nonetheless, only partially understood. Its remains are largely buried under later structures, notably the Sultan Ahmet Mosque, and can only be interpreted through texts and old representations. 2. The Development of Early Imperial Dress from the Tetrarchs to the Herakleian Dynasty General Introduction The emperor, as head of state, was the most important and powerful individual in the land; his official portraits and to a lesser extent those of the empress were depicted throughout the realm. His image occurred most frequently on small items issued by government officials such as coins, market weights, seals, imperial standards, medallions displayed beside new consuls, and even on the inkwells of public officials. As a sign of their loyalty, his portrait sometimes appeared on the patches sown on his supporters’ garments, embossed on their shields and armour or even embellishing their jewelry. Among more expensive forms of art, the emperor’s portrait appeared in illuminated manuscripts, mosaics, and wall paintings such as murals and donor portraits. Several types of statues bore his likeness, including those worshiped as part of the imperial cult, examples erected by public 1 officials, and individual or family groupings placed in buildings, gardens and even harbours at the emperor’s personal expense.

    EUGENIO RUSSO Costantino da Bisanzio a Costantinopoli(*)1 Abstract Constantine was a Christian. Of that there can be no doubt. The surviving signs of paganism visible in Constantine are rather the result of his education and culture. They in no way whatsoever constitute evidence for the continu- ing imperial worship of pagan divinities in the Constantinian period. Examination of the literary sources and ar- chaeological remains allows us to conclude that it is possible to recognize traces of the former Byzantium of Sep- timius Severus in the archaeological sites of the Strategion and a building beneath the Baths of Zeuxippos. In AD 324-330, the city on the Bosporus underwent a radical revolution: the city of Constantine went beyond the walls of the third century AD and it expanded to the west along the east-west axis. The previous city within the third- century walls was completely undermined in its north-south and east-west axes; there arose a new diagonal axis running northeast/southwest, which departed from the column of the Goths and arrived at the Augustaion, at the Hippodrome, and at the Palace (all Constantinian constructions, with St. Irene included). The centre of power (Palace-Hippodrome) was intimately linked to the Christian pole (St. Irene as the first cathedral and the pre- Justinianic St. Sophia that lay on the same axis and even closer to the Palace). According to the Chronicon Pas- chale, the church of St. Sophia was founded by Constantine in AD 326. The emperor deliberately abandoned the acropolis of Byzantium, and Byzantium was absorbed by the new city and obliterated by the new diagonal axis.

The Romans were indifferent to mathematical geography, with its system of latitudes and longitudes, its astronomical measurements, and its problem of projections. What they wanted was a practical map to be used for military and administrative purposes. Disregarding the elaborate projections of the Greeks, they reverted to the old disk map of the Ionian geographers as being better adapted to their purposes. Within this round frame the Roman cartographers placed the Orbis Terrarum, the circuit of the world. There are only scanty records of Roman maps of the Republic. The earliest of which we hear, the Sardinia map of 174 B.C., clearly had a strong pictorial element. But there is some evidence that, as we should expect from a land-based and, at that time, well advanced agricultural people, subsequent mapping development before Julius Caesar was dominated by land survey; the earliest recorded Roman survey map is as early as 167-164 B.C. If land survey did play such an important part, then these plans, being based on centuriation requirements and therefore square or rectangular, may have influenced the shape of smaller-scale maps. This shape was also one that suited the Roman habit of placing a large map on a wall of a temple or colonnade. Varro (116-27 B.C.) in his De re rustica, published in 37 B.C., introduces the speakers meeting at the temple of Mother Earth [Tellus] as they look at Italiam pictam [Italy painted].

This pointed definition (from the pen of Jean Gagel) underscores a theme of imperial ideology which receives such insistent emphasis in the offi­ cial art, ceremonial and panegyric of late antiquity that it must correspond to a chilling reality. The defeat of an emperor threatened not only the integrity of the frontiers but internal stability as well and the ascendancy of the emperor and his friends. Conversely, if a weak emperor could claim a dramatic victory, he might establish a more effective hold on the imperial power. In A.D. 420-22 this inner logic of Roman absolutism led to innovations in imperial ideology and to a crusade against Persia, with implications which have escaped the attention of scholars. The unwarlike Theodosius II made war not to defend the Empire but to become "master of victory," and, as will be seen, to strengthen the dynastic pretensions of his sister Pulcheria Augusta. This translation is accompanied, first, by an introduction to the text, and then by detailed discussion of the fourteen Regions, and finally by a conclusion, assessing the value of the evidence provided by this unique source. The discussion deals with a number of problems presented by the Notitia, including its discrepancies and omissions. The Notitia gives a vivid picture of the state of the city and its population just after its hundredth year: still showing many physical traces of old Byzantium, blessed with every civic amenity, but not particularly advanced in church building. The title Urbs Constantinopolitana nova Roma did not appear overstated at around the hundredth year since its foundation.
