REPORT TO THE COMMUNITY F Y15 INSPIRING A SMARTER WORLD Dear Friends, FY 2015 was a year of challenges and great opportunities, and a turning point in KCTS 9’s 60-year history. I am happy to share that the year has been a success. Your support has allowed us to meet our goal of providing meaningful content that is relevant to our community—on air, online and in person. The media landscape has changed dramatically in recent years, with fundamental changes in the way audiences choose and view content. Today, more than one in three visitors to KCTS9.org use a tablet or mobile device to connect with us. Five years ago, that figure was less than 5 percent. With new tools and technologies, the public has become actively involved in the creation, selection and distribution of content. We live in a world where time-shifted viewing, streaming video, tablets and smartphones have profoundly changed how audiences consume and share content. How does a public media organization stand out when, with today’s technology, everyone is a media company? We met this challenge by launching an initiative to produce innovative digital offerings that broaden the content we provide and the platforms on which we provide it. While staying true to our mission to inspire a smarter world, we shifted to a digital-first strategy. We are committed to creating, commissioning and curating local content with a continued adherence to the public-media beliefs that have defined KCTS 9 for 60 years. In FY 2015, we brought you live public dialogues including political debates and election coverage; a current affairs series that explores in depth stories from across the Northwest; local specials on environmental issues; community events that celebrate our diverse cultures; and educational programming that is free and accessible to all. -

As a wholly-owned subsidiary, none of the officers of Kiewit Pacific Co. (Kiewit) own stock. Incorporated on May 18, 1982, we can trace our history back to 1884, when Peter and Andrew Kiewit formed Kiewit Brothers, an Omaha masonry contracting partnership. Preservationists: Sharpening our skills or finding continuing education training (whether for ourselves or others) should be a high priority. To make this chore easier, I have compiled a list of activities in the Western United States or those that have special significance. Please take the time to review the list and follow the links. The following is a list of activities you should strongly consider participating in or send a delegate to represent your organization. There are many other training opportunities on the East Coast and if you need more information you can either follow the links or contact me specifically about your needs. Robert George Reichert, Architect Jeffrey Scott Murdock a thesis submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Science, Architecture University of Washington 2019 Committee: Brian McLaren Jeffrey Ochsner Program Authorized to Offer Degree: Architecture ©2019 Jeffrey Scott Murdock University of Washington ABSTRACT Robert George Reichert, Architect Jeffrey Scott Murdock Supervisory Committee: Brian McLaren and Jeffrey Ochsner Department of Architecture Robert George Reichert, Seattle architect, practiced as a sole proprietor in the city from 1952 until his death in 1996. He learned both to design and to play the organ at a very young age, and developed strong ideas about the meaning of architecture, notions that would guide his practice throughout his career. He studied under Walter Gropius at Harvard during a period of rationalist education and practice. Practicing in a vibrant architectural culture in post-World War II Seattle, Reichert chose a solitary path in which he believed the meaning of his work was romantic and spiritual, and his individual projects could be described in terms of their affective content rather than purely functionalist design. This thesis tells the story of Reichert’s life and career, drawing primarily on original documents in the Reichert Collection at the University of Washington Libraries Special Collections. The thesis places this iconoclastic artist-architect in the context of his time and place and seeks to frame his architecture and thought in a wider context. TOC.1 Robert George Reichert.
