Dr Giuliana Fuscaldo RRC Chairperson

Prior to joining Barwon Health Giuliana held academic positions at the , Victoria and Monash Universities. Giuliana has been involved in health ethics research and teaching for many years. Giuliana’s background is in reproductive technology. She worked for ten years as a clinical scientist and Researcher in a Melbourne IVF Clinic. During this time she completed a Masters of Bioethics at Monash University and later a PhD at Melbourne University, on ethical issues arising from advances in reproductive technology. Giuliana is a longstanding member of several ethics committees and has designed and delivered education and training programs on research ethics and research methods for health professionals, researchers and HREC members.

Dr Olivia Dean RRC Member

Dr Olivia Dean is currently the Director of the Clinical Trials Division and Senior Research Fellow with the Centre for Innovations in Mental and Physical health And Clinical Treatments (IMPACT) at . She holds honorary appointments with the Florey Institute of Neuroscience and Mental Health, The University of Melbourne and Barwon Health. Dr Dean has developed a research program focusing on novel therapies for psychiatric disorders. The program integrates preclinical multidisciplinary approaches and clinical trials to understand the biological underpinnings of mental illness, specifically depression. The multifaceted research program allows verification of target engagement and thus identification of targets for novel therapies. Dr Dean has been responsible for the successful completion of a multitude of clinical trials, including both national and international sites. Dr Dean is committed to providing better treatment outcomes for people with mental disorders and is actively involved in ensuring her research reaches community forums and outcomes are directly translated into clinical practice.

Prof Trisha Dunning RRC Member

Qualifications – RN, MEd, PhD, Graduate Certificates: Obstetrics, Infant Welfare, Paediatrics, Family Planning, Aromatherapy, Relaxation Massage. Graduate Diplomas: Health Education, Professional Writing. Credentialed Diabetes Educator since 1986.

Current Position Inaugural Chair in Nursing and Director of the Centre for Nursing and

Allied Health Research, Deakin University and Barwon Health, , Victoria, Australia.

Trisha chairs an important centre that is a partnership between Deakin University and Barwon Health. The Centre focuses on undertaking research as well as providing academic, research and professional leadership to students and staff in both organisations. Before coming to Deakin, Trisha was Professor of Endocrinology and Diabetes Nursing Research at University of Melbourne and St. Vincent’s Health.

Trisha has an international reputation in diabetes research and clinical practice. She is a member of many diabetes, , complementary therapy and nursing committees, and the foundation chair of the Diabetes Education Consultative Section of the International Diabetes Federation (IDF). She completed two three year terms as Vice President of the IDF in December 2015. She is a current member of the Board of Diabetes Australia Victoria, and is on the Executive of the Deakin Research Centre for Quality and Patient Safety Research.

Trisha was made a member of the Order of Australia for her work in diabetes and nursing in 2004 and admitted to the Honour Roll of Victorian Women in 2014. Her research concentrates on diabetes self-care and nursing management, particu larly older people with diabetes and end of life care. She has a particular interest in quality use of and maintains a clinical focus in these areas. Trisha is the author of many peer-reviewed journal articles and several books about diabetes and complementary therapies.

Dr Rodney Fawcett RRC Member

Dr Rod Fawcett is currently the Director of Medical Education and Training for Barwon Health and its Designated Officer (Tissue). He is also the Field Emergency Medical Officer for the Barwon Region under the Victorian State Health Emergency Response Plan and a Clinical Senior Lecturer for Deakin Medical School. He moved to Geelong in 1996 following retirement as a Group Captain (full time service) with the RAAF. He saw service overseas as the Commanding Officer of 4 RAAF Hospital in Butterworth Malaysia in the early 1980s. In the last 6 years of service he was the Principal Medical Officer for RAAF Training and Logistics Commands and also the Australian Coordinating Member for

Aviation Medicine Research component of the Air Standards Coordination Committee (a

5 nations body involving the UK, USA, Canada, Australia & NZ). He was Chair of the

Postgraduate Medical Council of Victoria’s Accreditation Subcommittee from 2004 until 2011 and continues as a training site accreditor for Intern and PGY2 posts. He is a member of The PMCV Workforce Subcommittee. Dr Fawcett’s, qualifications include an MSc in Occupational Medicine from London University, MBBS from the University of Adelaide, a BMedSc from the University of Tasmania, a Diploma in Aviation Medicine (UK), FAFPHM, AFCHSM and AFRACMA.

Ms Kathryn Ives RRC Member

Ms Kathryn Ives is currently the Senior Research Coordinator of the Department for Anaesthesia, Pain and Perioperative Medicine for Barwon Health. She is a Critical Care Nurse with 12 years of nursing experience and works frequently in the Intensive Care Unit and the Cardiac Care Unit at Barwon Health.

Kathryn moved to Geelong in 2011 from Perth, Western Australia and has previously worked at the Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital and the Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre.

Kathryn acts as a resource and facilitator for research Investigators within the

Department for Anaesthesia, Pain and Perioperative Medicine and is a current member of

the Barwon Health Clinical Trials Advisory Committee.

Kathryn is the primary Site Coordinator at Barwon Health for 6 ANZCA funded multi- centre clinical trials being run within her department. Kathryn is also the primary Research Coordinator for one of Barwon Health’s single-centre clinical trials; The Post- Anaesthesia N-Acetyl-Cysteine Cognitive EvaluAtion (PANACEA) trial.

Her qualifications include a BN, a Postgraduate Masters in Clinical Research, and a Postgraduate Certificate in Critical Care Nursing.

A/Prof Mark Kotowicz RRC Member

Associate Prof Kotowicz is an experienced physician and clinical investigator whose research activities have focused on the pathophysiology, epidemiology and treatment of osteoporosis. Trained in osteoporosis epidemiology by Prof LJ Melton III at the Mayo Clinic and Foundation, he was one of two full-time clinical academics appointed to the University of Melbourne’s Department of Medicine at The Geelong and St Vincent’s Hospitals in 1991. This was the first regional academic department established in Victoria and became an independent department in 2001, the Department of Clinical & Biomedical Sciences: Barwon Health, supporting epidemiological, clinical research trials and basic laboratory research. In

2010 he joined the Deakin University School of Medicine where he is the Deputy Director of

the Department of Medicine at Barwon Health and Director of the Department of

Endocrinology and Diabetes.

He designed and secured initial funding for the Geelong Osteoporosis Study and has been a principal investigator on the project since 1993. He has presented data regularly at national and international scientific meetings with over 150 publications in the peer reviewed literature (H-index 42, citation 6452). He has served on the NHMRC review panel since 1994 and on the Musculoskeletal Grant Review Panel in 2007. He has reviewed for the Journal of Bone and Mineral Research, Bone, Osteoporosis International, BioMed Central, Britsh Medical Journal Open, Clinical Endocrinology, Journal of Rheumatology, Future Medicine, Nutrition & Metabolism, Clinical Drug Safety, Journal of Internal Medicine and the Medical Journal of Australia. He is an active member of the Australian and New Zealand Bone and Mineral Society (ANZBMS), a member of the American Society for Bone and Mineral Research (ASBMR), the International Bone and Mineral society, International Osteoporosis Foundation, European Calcified Tissue Society, the Endocrine Society, the Australian Diabetes Society and the Endcorine Society of Australia. He is currently Chair of the

Therapeutics Committee of ANZBMS and Chair of the Royal Australasian College of

Physicians Specialist Advisory Committee in Endocrinology and the Joint Training Committee

in Endocrinology and Chemical Pathology.

Mr Paul Muir RRC Member

Mr Paul Muir graduated from the Monash University in 1974 (B Pharm) and has practised as a hospital pharmacist in the public sector ever since, except for a couple of years in the United Kingdom following registration. In 1992, he graduated with a Bachelor of Arts from Deakin University. For many years, Paul was involved by professional association (The Society of Hospital Pharmacists of Australia), both at a state level (serving as secretary, then chairman) and then federally (serving as treasurer and chair of the Committees of Specialty Practice). During this time, he became a Director of Allied Health Professions Australia.

Over the years, Paul has developed an interest in the management of clinical drug trials, and currently his role is that of investigational drugs pharmacist in the Pharmacy Department of the University Hospital, Geelong. He is interested in undertaking research himself whenever the opportunity arises. In 2007 he received a $4,000 DBL research grant for a study entitled Burnout in Australian Hospital Pharmacists, which was submitted and accepted for publication in the Journal of Pharmacy Practice and Research.

Paul has represented the hospital pharmacy profession in a number of different fora including the Pharmaceutical Society of Australia (Victorian Branch): Executive Member and Treasurer, Chapter of Pharmacy Practice Tutors; the Pharmacy Board of Victoria: Trainee Programs Advisory Group; and Victoria University as a Lecturer in the Pharmacy Technicians Course, Department of Food, Technology and Science.

RRC Members – Updated January 2017 Dr Jacqueline Pawlak RRC Member

Dr Jacqui Pawlak has completed a B.Sc (Hons), PhD, Graduate Certificate of Business Administration (Deakin University), and Diploma of Management (Swinburne University in Partnership with St Vincent’s Health).

She has experience working as a Research Officer at the Baker Heart Research Institute (1998 -2006) and has worked in the Research Governance Unit at St Vincent’s Hospital, Melbourne (2007-2010). Following working in Melbourne, Jacqui returned to Geelong (2010) and began working at Barwon Health as the Ethics Submission Co-ordinator – Andrew Love Cancer Centre, Clinical Trials, Barwon Health. She is currently the Ethics Submission Coordinator, within the Oral Health Services Department at Barwon Health.

Ms Susan Streat RRC Member

Sue is a Registered Nurse with considerable experience both clinically and as a research assistant. Sue completed General Nursing training at the in 1983, Midwifery training at St. George’s Hospital, Kew in 1990 and worked in both fields until 1995. Sue commenced Behavioural Science at La Trobe University in 1990, completed an extended major stream in psychology prior to moving to Geelong with her family in 1995 and transferred her studies to Deakin University where she completed a Bachelor of Arts in 2000. Following the completion of her degree, Sue worked as a

research assistant within Deakin University’s Faculty of Health.

Currently, Sue works in two part time roles. Sue has worked as a research assistant for the Centre for Nursing and Allied Health Research, Deakin University and Barwon Health under the directorship of Professor Trisha Dunning since 2008 and as a Hepatology Clinical Nurse Consultant at Barwon Health Liver Clinic since 2011. Sue has a passion for ensuring that patients are provided with holistic, individualised, patient centred care and finds that both her research and clinical roles complement and inform each other to promote and deliver best practice, evidence based patient care.
