Thirty years?! For those who remember the resulting political and economic turmoil, the past three decades have simply flown by. The Peaceful Revolution spawned German unification, creating a powerhouse which ultimately paved the way to European unity. Yet all it takes is a cursory glance at the realms of business and science, not to mention digital transformation, to realize that the revolutionary developments are far from over. What’s more, Leipzig is still in the thick of it all.     Spieljahr 1984/85 Bezirksklasse Leipzig – Staffel 1 Nachdem endlich ein lang ersehnter Wunsch der Frohburger Fußballfreunde in Erfüllung gegangen war, begann auch eine neue Zeitrechnung. Grund für Optimisten wie Pessimisten zu spekulieren, wie lange diese wohl dauern würde. Das Aufgebot der 1. Mannschaft blieb im Wesentlichen unverändert, doch mit der Rück- kehr des DDR-Liga erfahrenen Eckhardt Nöske und dem Armee-Heimkehrer Olaf Helm, hatten sich zwei Sportfreunde zurückgemeldet, auf die man große Hoffnungen setzte. Hinzu kam noch Detlef Ludwig aus Geithain, der ebenfalls schon höherklassig gespielt hatte. Nach Abschluss der 1. Halbserie schienen die Skeptiker Recht zu behalten, denn mit 12:18 Punkten stand man auf einem Abstiegsplatz. Charakteristisch für diesen ersten Durchgang war die erschreckend schlechte Auswärtsbilanz von 2:12 Punkten und 4:17 Toren sowie der nicht zu übersehende Leistungsabfall im Laufe dieses Halbjahres. Der hervorragenden Moral und Einsatzbereitschaft aller Beteiligten war es zu verdanken, dass mit Beginn der Rückrunde 14:2 Punkte und 29:6 Tore in Serie verbucht wurden. Mit dem 9:0 in Groitzsch wurde während dieser Zeit sogar das höchste Ergebnis aller Spiele in der Staffel 1 der Bezirksklasse erzielt. Diese Siegesserie war der Grundstein zum Klassenerhalt, der am 8. Mai 1985 nach dem 2:1 Sieg gegen Lippendorf kräftig und mit vielen Flaschen Sekt gefeiert wurde. Dieser war nicht nur äußerst kostbar und selten, sondern auch noch reichlich teuer.     Assessing the 2009 German Federal Election: How the SPD’s Failure to Coordinate the Left Put the Right in Power Andrew J. Drummond1 University of Arkansas at Little Rock The recent 2009 German Federal Elections provided a decisive electoral victory for the Christian Democrats, who returned to power without the Social Democrats for the first time in more than a decade. But this shift from grand coalition to center-right cabinet is not the only change in the German electoral landscape─in retrospect, the 2009 election may prove to be a historic turning point in the German party system. The election marked the low water marks in the percentage of list votes won by the CDU and the CSU since the founding democratic election of 1949, when the German party system was in its infancy and party attachments not yet mature. The 2009 election also saw the worst performance in terms of list votes for the SPD since the close of WWII, and the highest percentage of list votes registered by the FDP, the Greens, and die Linke (the former Communists) in German history. In this paper I examine district level returns for clues of how the left is fracturing and what a divided left may mean for the future of German electoral politics. I argue this election may in fact signal a significant and perhaps imminent turning point in partisan attachment on the left that will have wide-ranging implications for the SPD’s electoral and coalition building strategies in the future.
