hicago Cubs Hall of Fame infielder Ernie Banks used to say “Hey, let’s play two!” The theme for the Pacific Palisades Baseball Asso- Cciation’s annual Pancake Breakfast last Saturday morning was “Let’s pitch two!” Co-honorary mayors Janice Goldfinger and Billy Crystal took turns throwing the first pitches to begin the local Pony league’s 2018 season to continue a proud Palisades tradition that started in 1954 on diamonds now known as the Field of Dreams at the Palisades Recreation Center. “This is amazing... we used to come to pancake breakfasts 30 years ago or so and this building didn’t exist,” said Goldfinger, a producer, actress and Mrs. Billy Crystal since June 1970. “I hope you all under- stand how special this place is and how fortunate you are to play here, it’s really incredible. We are both Yankees fans, I’m wearing my Yogi Berra shirt for one of the greatest catchers of all time and we’re going to be out here watching some of the games when we can but we’re going to be rooting for all of you—not just the Yankees!” “We’ve been here 39 years and what makes the Palisades great is the fact that you cheered umpires this morning... that never happens anyplace,” Crystal added. “From the time my father rolled the ball to me and I rolled it back I’ve loved this game. I’ve played it since I was a kid and on Tuesday, March 13 it will mark my 10th anniversary of my one at-bat in the major leagues for the Yankees against the Pittsburgh Pirates and my retirement immediately after I struck out. I pulled a hamstring getting dressed. We talk about the Field of Dreams, I dreamt that I wanted to be a player my whole life and I got my chance to do it. I look at all these beautiful boys and girls and my message is to keep dreaming and keep playing.” After that, Janice fired a pitch over the heart of the plate, Billy tossed a breaking ball that caught the corner and uniformed kids took the field to see if they could outwit their opponents and Old Man Rain. Janice and Billy were installed jointly as honorary mayors January 20 at the Pacific Palisades Chamber of Commerce’s Comedy Night, hosted by the outgoing mayor and comedian Kevin Nealon and friends. Baseball Beats Uni in League Opener hen it comes to pitching, the Palisades High baseball team should be able to match any team in the City Section this season and the WDolphins are counting on their depth to take them deep in the playoffs. The first order of business, however, is defending their Western League title and the Dolphins took their first step towards acheiving that with an 11-1 six-inning rout of LA University on Monday night at George Robert Field. Palisades improved to 10-2—its best start in 12 seasons under head coach Mike Voelkel—and plays University again tonight at George Robert Field, only this time the Dolphins will be the visiting team. Jared Brecher got the start Monday and was stellar on the mound, allowing only four hits with eight strikeouts in six innings. Miles Kirsh- ner hit a fly ball to score Conrad Smith with the game-ending run. The Dolphins had eight hits, drew nine walks and stole 12 bases. “I’ve taken on the role as the No. 3 starter until Will [Coquillard] comes back and I’m just trying to do my part,” Brecher said. “The chan- geup is normally my go-to pitch and I improved on it a lot over the sum- mer, but it wasn’t working today so I went with the fastball and curve ball. I trust my defense to make plays behind me. Meet the Sister-in-Law Duo Behind Veronica Beard

By SARAH SHMERLING Editor-in-Chief

eronica Miele Beard and Veronica Swan- son Beard are sisters by marriage and Vpartners by choice. Garnering the catchy nickname “The Ve- ronicas,” the pair founded the Veronica Beard brand in 2010, which will soon open its sixth store this spring at Palisades Village on April 5. “As sisters-in-law, the business is family and the home is family—and we couldn’t ask for anything more,” the Veronicas explained to the Palisadian-Post ahead of the store open- ing. “We feel so lucky that we have each other because we would not be where we are today if there weren’t two of us. Our two perspec- tives are what make this brand so unique and genuine and while we don’t always agree on every minute decision or design detail, we are always aligned on the big picture and having each other makes our successes that much more rewarding.” Veronica Swanson Beard described her style as cool, classic and chic, while Veroni- ca Miele Beard said hers is more eclectic and edgy, with a touch of rock ‘n’ roll. The two were inspired to launch the brand after leaving careers in finance and fashion to raise their families—Veronica Swanson Beard has three children and Veronica Miele Beard has five. “We found ourselves at family gatherings talking about our new favorite designers, must- have piece and styling tricks,” the Veronicas explained. “We both quickly realized there was a void in the market for clothing that you could live in. We set out to change that and create the perfect uniform for women: elevated, sexy and chic. When we launched in 2010, we focused on perfecting the jacket and from there, started The Veronicas: Veronica Miele Beard and Veronica Swanson Beard Photos courtesy of Veronica Beard creating the pieces that we were on the hunt for—a chic top, a cool pair of jeans, and it just Palisades Village will be Veronica Beard’s “We just launched extended sizing for grew organically from there.” second Los Angeles store, following a loca- spring 2019, so we now carry sizes 00 through Insert the Dickey Jacket—the piece that tion on Melrose. 24,” the Veronicas said. “This is a project started it all.
