Situated on Santa Monica Bay, it is bordered on three sides by Pacific Palisades, Brentwood and Venice. The Census Bureau population for Santa Monica in 2010 was 89,736. Due in part to a world class temperate climate, Santa Monica became a famed resort town by the early 20th century. The city has recently experienced significant growth as a high tech, entertainment, dining and medical center serving the greater Los Angeles area. Santa Monica experienced a boom in the late 1980s through the revitalization of its downtown core, including the transformation of out dated buildings into trendy high tech “Silicon Beach”, medical, retail and entertainment venues . This included a $50 million restoration of the iconic City Hall Building, a $60 million redesign of the 7 AC Palisades Park, $265 Million renovation of the Santa Monica Place Mall and a several hundred-million- dollar renovation of the Providence St. Johns Medical Center. The Santa Monica Pier remains a very popular destination. Total direct visitor spending reached $1.87 billion, up 1% from $1.84 in 2015, generating $62.6 ($58.6) million of lodging and sales taxes to the City, a robust 7% rise. Tourism supported 13,300 (13,500) local tourism related jobs. Thus, Santa Monica’s tourism industry remained solid, producing record volume, spending, taxes with softening of International visitation and spending. With seven new stations serving diverse LA neighborhoods such as Century City, West Los Angeles, and Santa Monica, the Metro Rail system will now expand to 87 stations and over 93 miles of rail to destinations across L.A. County. Santa Monica is even easier to access now that the Metro’s Expo Line to Santa Monica is now open! With seven new stations and 6.6 miles of rail — there is so much more to explore. • [email protected]> Subject: Tenant at 3032 Wilshire
From: Mari Newhoff <[email protected]> Sent: Friday, July 17, 2020 2:40 PM To: Planning <[email protected]> Subject: Tenant at 3032 Wilshire EXTERNAL Dear Planning Commission: I am writing to voice my concerns about the potential new convenience store tenant in the 3032 Wilshire building. The convenience store will create a lot of headaches for the residential neighborhood to which it is adjacent. When Bristol Farms came in, it elevated the neighborhood followed by Erewhon and Trader Joe’s. After the investment of creating such a beautiful building, the first tenant should not be one that has the potential to downgrade the neighborhood. There are five 7/11s within a mile of this project: such as Santa Monica and Sawtelle, Wilshire and Bundy, Santa Monica and Wellesley – not one of them is inviting from a consumer standpoint. They are all littered with trash and a haven for the homeless. AND if this is the first anchor tenant, I fear it will scare off prospective Class A tenants which the neighborhood desperately need such as bakeries or restaurants. After living through the inconsiderate construction which began as early as 6:30am most days, the neighborhood was looking forward to a little class. I am pleading with you to reconsider. Best, Mari Newhoff 1230 Berkeley Street To: [email protected] Sent: Sat, Jul 18, 2020 1:31 pm Subject: New Business - PLEASE No! Santa Monica Planning, I am a home owner in the 1200 block of Berkeley Street in Santa Monica. I am writing to respectfully protest against a new business, potentially planned for the new building on the southwest corner of Berkeley Street and Wilshire Blvd.
