They can be reached safely and easily by car or train at any 2me of year. Riederalp, BeKmeralp and Fiescheralp are all car free! The final part of the journey takes place by cable car from the sta2ons in Mörel, BeKen Valley or Fiesch. Day 1 11:00 – 11:30 Arrive in the Aletsch Arena (Riederalp, BeKmeralp or Fiesch-Eggishorn) Three viewpoints (Moosfluh, BeKmerhorn or Eggishorn) Hohfluh and Moosfluh – magnificent vantage points by the Great Aletsch Glacier The Moosfluh viewpoint, a high-energy site, is situated at 2,333m above sea level, close to the Hohfluh viewpoint at an al2tude of 2,227m. Both loca2ons offer breathtaking views of the Great Aletsch Glacier. A short, comfortable trip on the modern cableway brings visitors up to the vantage points from Riederalp. Once at the top, the giant glacier seems close enough to touch, making the Hohfluh and Moosfluh viewpoints ideal for a trip you’ll never forget. BeFmerhorn – a peak experience at the Great Aletsch Glacier A mountain and its many faces: enjoyment of nature is not BeKmerhorn’s only aKrac2on. A combina2on of sport, nature and culture makes this viewpoint a unique way to experience the mountain. Situated at 2,647m, it is easily reached on a short cable-car ride with BeKmeralp Bahnen. The magnificent view of the Great Aletsch Glacier is just one of the many mountain experiences awai2ng visitors to the BeKmerhorn viewpoint. Eggishorn – a perfect 360° panorama It’s possible to admire the full length and impressive majesty of the Great Aletsch Glacier from Eggishorn, the viewpoint located at 2,869 metres. Not only that – whichever direc2on you turn, you’ll find the highest peaks: the Mönch, the Eiger, the Jungfrau, the Wannenhorn, the Finsteraarhorn and, to the west, the Weisshorn, the Mischabel group with the Dom, and the added bonus of the MaKerhorn itself, all of which form a breathtaking 360° panorama. Glacier World BeFmerhorn – bringing the exhibi=on experience alive This mul2media exhibi2on presents an in-depth explora2on of the secrets of the Great Aletsch Glacier, uncovering the exci2ng facts and fascina2ng stories that are buried in this gigan2c mass of perpetual ice. During the exhibi2on experience, visitors of all ages can learn interes2ng facts about the glacier as they embark on an exci2ng journey of discovery involving playful explora2on and relaxed enjoyment, with a view of the Great Aletsch Glacier. The exhibi2on is free of charge. Viewpoint tours can also be booked as an overall package including lunch. ! Day 2 Guided snowshoe tour (from 14:00 to 18:00, as desired) A snowshoe tour guided by someone who knows the area well is the best way to explore the Aletsch Arena on snowshoes. On the tour, your guide will take you to the most beau2ful places in the Aletsch Arena, share 2ps and techniques, and introduce you to some absolute highlights. The popular, fun airboard and sledging event by the Moosfluh gondola sta2on provides the ideal opportunity: once the skiing day is over, the blue slope belongs to the sledgers alone. With the Valais sun warm on your back and dazzled by the sparkling, snow-covered landscape, a winter hike in the Aletsch Arena becomes a truly memorable experience: where else are hikers rewarded with panoramic views of the 4000-metre Valais peaks and the Great Aletsch Glacier? MORITZ – ZERMATT – GORNERGRAT Private de Luxe Train Railway journey through the Swiss Alps on the tracks of the legendary Orient Express This luxury train includes two original Pullman cars, built in 1931, which once belonged to the Cie. Int. des Wagons-Lits et Grands Express européens. The exquisite wooden inlay work in the carriages was carried out by renowned French cabinetmaker René Prou. For the sector from St. Moritz to Zermatt, the train also has a bar-lounge carriage built in 1928 and a luggage car from 1930.     Price, Martin Francis (Ph.D., Geography) Mountain forests as common-property resources: management policies and their outcomes in the Colorado Rockies and the Swiss Alps. Thesis directed by Professor Jack D. Ives This is a historical, comparative study of the development, implementation, and results of policies for managing the forests of the Colorado Rockies and the Swiss Alps, with emphasis on two study areas in each region. The Pikes Peak (Colorado) and Davos (Switzerland) areas have been adjacent to regional urban centers since the late 19th century. The Summit (Colorado) and Aletsch (Switzerland) areas have experienced a rapid change from a resource-based to a tourism-based economy since the 1950s. The study's theoretical basis is that of common-property resources. Three primary outputs of the forests are considered: wood, recreation, and protection. The latter includes both the protection of watersheds and the protection of infrastructure and settlements from natural hazards. Forest management policies date back to the 13th century in Switzerland and the late 19th century in Colorado, but were generally unsuccessful in achieving their objectives. In the late 19th century, the early foresters in each region succeeded in placing the protection of mountain forests on regional, and then national, political agendas. In consequence, by the beginning of the 20th century, federal policies were in place to ensure the continued provision of the primary functions of the forests recognized at that time: protection and timber supply. During the 20th century, these policies have been expanded, with increasing emphasis on the provision of public goods. However, most policies have been reactive, not proactive.

The Case of the Jungfrau- Aletsch-Bietschhorn World Heritage Site in Switzerland Astrid Wallner1, Stephan Rist2, Karina Liechti3, Urs Wiesmann4 Abstract The Jungfrau-Aletsch-Bietschhorn World Heritage Site (WHS) comprises main- ly natural high-mountain landscapes. The High Alps and impressive natu- ral landscapes are not the only feature making the region so attractive; its uniqueness also lies in the adjoining landscapes shaped by centuries of tra- ditional agricultural use. Given the dramatic changes in the agricultural sec- tor, the risk faced by cultural landscapes in the World Heritage Region is pos- sibly greater than that faced by the natural landscape inside the perimeter of the WHS. Inclusion on the World Heritage List was therefore an opportunity to contribute not only to the preservation of the ‘natural’ WHS: the protected part of the natural landscape is understood as the centrepiece of a strategy | downloaded: 1.10.2021 to enhance sustainable development in the entire region, including cultural landscapes. Maintaining the right balance between preservation of the WHS and promotion of sustainable regional development constitutes a key chal- lenge for management of the WHS. Local actors were heavily involved in the planning process in which the goals and objectives of the WHS were defined. This participatory process allowed examination of ongoing prob- lems and current opportunities, even though present ecological standards were a ‘non-negotiable’ feature. Therefore the basic patterns of valuation of the landscape by the different actors could not be modified. Nevertheless, the process made it possible to jointly define the present situation and thus create a basis for legitimising future action.
