The Peabody Institute of the Johns Hopkins University invites applications and nominations for the position of Director of the Peabody Preparatory, available in the Fall of 2017.

Founded in 1894, the Peabody Preparatory is Baltimore’s premier community school for the performing arts. The Peabody Preparatory is part of the Peabody Institute, one of the nine divisions that comprises the Johns Hopkins University. The Preparatory has a distinguished faculty of 150 educators and serves approximately 2,000 students per week on three campuses. The Preparatory offers music and dance lessons ranging from early childhood classes for infants to the Adult Continuing Education program for adults. The dance department, dating from 1914, is one of the oldest continuously operating dance training centers in the United States.

Students may enroll for individual lessons and have the opportunity to perform in repertoire classes and recitals. Group instruction is available in dance, orchestra, chorus, and chamber music; group instruction programs include early childhood classes, vocal fundamentals, and music theory. In addition, the Preparatory offers more structured curricula in piano, strings, dance, and other musical studies for students in certificate programs and pre-professional training.

The Opportunity

The next Director will join a dynamic, forward looking administration at the Peabody Institute and will have the opportunity to expand and deepen the reach of Peabody Preparatory on campuses in Baltimore, Towson, and Howard County while developing opportunities in Annapolis and elsewhere throughout the region. S/he will take leadership role in creating on-line programs and distance learning opportunities in order to build enrollment, increase revenues, and strengthen the Peabody Preparatory brand locally, nationally, and internationally.

The next Director will lead a superb faculty dedicated to the dual mission of giving young people the opportunity to realize their highest potential as performing artists, and providing music and dance education to all members of the community who desire it, regardless of age, professional intention, or previous training. The Position

The Director provides leadership and vision for the successful operation of the Peabody Preparatory. S/he is responsible and accountable for moving the Preparatory forward through strategic planning and innovation while maintaining the tradition of excellence for which the Peabody Preparatory and Peabody Institute is well known.

The Director manages the day-to-day operation of the Preparatory with a primary focus on program development for all students, from children through life-long learners, both onsite and on-line. The Director recruits, supports, motivates, and manages Preparatory faculty and staff.

The Director takes a leadership role in marketing and fundraising. S/he ensures that Peabody Preparatory achieves and exceeds annual goals for student enrollment. S/he also takes a leadership role in fundraising from individuals, business, foundations, and government.

The Director is the primary liaison and representative of the Peabody Preparatory to the greater Baltimore community. S/he establishes and maintains productive working relationships with local and regional communities and organizations.

The Director of Peabody Preparatory reports to the Senior Associate Dean of Institute Studies and supervises the Assistant Director, Department Chairs, and Faculty. S/he works in close collaboration with the Institute administrative staff in the areas of finance, HR, marketing, fundraising, and enrollment management in order to accomplish the goals of the Preparatory.

Candidate Profile

The ideal candidate will be a visionary, innovative, entrepreneurial, and accomplished arts administrator with demonstrated commitment to excellence and the proven ability to lead a major education program within an arts or music organization. S/he will be a passionate and articulate advocate for the value and importance of music and arts education for people of all ages in a community-based environment. The successful candidate will possess strong organizational and interpersonal skills. She will be a team player with the leadership ability to inspire and motivate staff to do their best work and achieve successful results. S/he will be a data-driven decision maker. S/he will be comfortable with the use technology in delivering educational programs.

The successful candidate will have a minimum of seven years’ administrative experience in a leadership position. S/he will have the demonstrated ability to lead successful music and arts education programs for pre-collegiate students and lifelong learners. Teaching experience will be considered an important asset. Additional experience in designing, implementing, and evaluating new programs rooted in technologies reaching beyond the classroom, specifically for lifelong learners. will also be an asset. A bachelor’s degree is required; an advanced degree in music, arts education, or arts administration is preferred.

Compensation

Compensation, including benefits, is competitive and commensurate with qualifications and experience.
