MIN. BID SEPTEMBER RARE SOUL AUCTION & A STEVE MANCHA DID MY BABY CALL WHEELSVILLE VG+ 250 102 Mancha’s first solo release and a perfectly executed slice of midtempo sixties Detroit soul. Mancha’s real name was Clyde Wilson and this was his only outing for the label owner Mike Hanks before moving to Don Davis’ Groovesville label. Not a mint copy for sure, so check the soundbite which also includes the excellent flipside ‘Whirlpool’. B INELL YOUNG WHAT DO YOU SEE IN HER LIBRA 101 VG++ 500 Lots of attention for the funkier side of this New Orleans release these days but don’t ignore the smoother flipside ‘I Remember The Summer’ which we have also ‘soundbitten’ for you and makes for a truly great double-sider. C JOCK MITCHELL NOT A CHANCE IN A IMPACT 1023 WD M- 500 MILLION What a side this is, one of Northern Soul’s greatest moments, the way it shifts gear halfway through when it was already aural dynamite is simply magnificent. Detroit of course, but Joe (originally ‘Little Jake’) was a Florida artist from Tampa. In ’66 he went to find fame and fortune in Detroit… we’re glad he did. D BOLD BREED feat. MOOD FOR LOVE / LET ME BOLD BREED VG++ 300 “B. G.” DOWN EASY 10026 From Taylorsville, North Carolina with Harry Deal at the helm. In ‘The Heee Baby Days’ (Greg Haynes’ definitive record of the Beach Scene) this 45 is not even mentioned – it must be rare. The vinyl contains just on light mark or otherwise would certainly be a minter. ! ! E THE MAMSELLES OPEN UP YOUR HEART (LET ABC 11040 VG++ 200 LOVE OUT) Brilliantly produced by the great George Kerr this one started to get spins a few years ago – and quite rightly too as it was one of a number of fine sides which had been overlooked in the seventies. As ever, most copies hitting the turntables were promo copies. Here we offer the much rarer issue… not mint, but you might wait a long time to locate a mint issue. Amazingly, there were two sixties girl groups called The Mamselles – one black, one white – no prizes for guessing which one this is. F NOLAN CHANCE JUST LIKE THE WEATHER CONSTELLATION M- 300 161 WD Real name Charles Davis and a one-time member of the Dukays, Nolan Chance was the name he chose for his solo career. Famously, this 45 also appeared on Bunky (which was Bill ‘Bunky’ Sheppards own promo label) but as it uses the Constellation number must be second to that label (an expensive reissue then!). It’s a process Sheppard often employed on records he was involved in, but we’ve never seen a Gene Chandler release on that imprint, for instance. G ALFIE DAVISON LOVE IS SERIOUS BUSINESS MERCURY 76001 M- 200 So many calls if we set-sale a copy of this. Respecting the will of the people therefore (where have we heard that before?) we have put it up for offers. A nice mint issue copy and given that it sunk without trace at the time of release, the stock issue copy must surely be just that bit rarer. H LITTLE STANLEY THE STRAN VANCE 0126 VG++ 400 An out and out stormer from Little Stanley Lippitt would have been an absolute dancefloor packer at the Casino. As supplier Simon Soussan was L.A.-based it is a testament to rarity that this Oakland release didn’t turn up then. This is one of those records that has a little ‘acne’ on the vinyl (i.e. a few raised mini-bumps) but the soundbite is testament to their lack of effect. Lippitt was later a singer with Marvin Holmes and his band. I THOMAS LORD OPEN UP YOUR EYES RAZZ 1001 VG++ 250 DUCKETT An obscure 1982 Hollywood release from the unknown Duckett, well we say ‘obscure’, the evidence is that he was a minor actor… and it seems that this was his only trip to vinyl. Despite names such as Wah Wah Watson and Harry Balk being associated to this release, it seems to be a rarity, for sure it escaped UK attention at the time. Almost mint, just a few minor scuffs. J SOUL BROS. INC. PYRAMID GOLDEN EYE M- 500 1001 Although Henry Boatwright and Charles Conrad were the voices on many of the Soul Bros Incs.’s records, we think it is writer George Brown on this one, which hails from 1972. A quite unique recording that sounds like no other Northern Soul record and which rarely crops up these days. K WILLIE TEE PLEASE DON’T GO NOLA 737 VG+ 600 Back in the day, this was the Willie Tee rarity, putting all those Gatur releases in the shade price-wise. Seems like those latter releases have caught up – nonetheless this is still a rare 45 and more ‘Northern’ than those later Gatur releases. Booted on a white promo, its perhaps now better to have the issue copy. L HOUSTON OUTLAWS AIN’T NO TELLING WESTBOUND M- 500 179 WD Some of these Westbound releases seem to be pretty rare and not one of the Houston Outlaws three releases for the label are easy to find, in fact this unknown group have been rumoured to be Archie Bell (or at least the Drells) on a ‘moonlighter’ away from Atlantic. Whatever the truth, they were a talented combo on this wonderful track. M HERMAN HITSON YOU CAN’T KEEP A GOOD SWEET ROSE 25 M- 300 MAN DOWN In the late eighties when ‘crossover’ was infiltrating the modern scene, Rod Dearlove used to put me on ‘early doors’ at Thorne to play things like this wonderful item (‘Love’s Stormy Weather’ was another) that were new to the scene. Difficult to imagine it’s now over 30 years ago, but in all that time only odd copies of this crossover gem have turned up. Great funk flip by the way, ‘Ain’t No Other Way’. N COOKIE JACKSON DO YOU STILL LOVE ME PROGRESS 912 VG++ 300 D Storming early sixties West Coast mover from Lorraine ‘Cookie’ Jackson got extensive plays around 15 years ago but still has loads of dancefloor mileage. This is a promo copy… can’t remember ever seeing that before, possibly very rare indeed. O HAROLD BURRAGE PLEASE LOVE ME PASO 101 M- 250 Burrage was the doyen of Chicago’s early soul years and a massive influence on the likes of Otis Clay and Tyrone Davis. Nearly all of his pre-M-Pac releases are scarce to a lesser or greater degree. This fabulous R&B mover ticks all the boxes and may be Burrage’s rarest release. !

Another record that uses the ‘Time’s A Wasting’ backing track. !
