Established in 1960 and a proudly South African company, we have the largest shipyard in Southern Africa consisting of 11 hectares with a useable water frontage of 300 metres. Our privately owned floating dock can accommodate vessels up to 75 metres in length. Southern African Shipyards holds the record for building the largest ship ever constructed on the African continent and has a proud history of building quality ships: from a Fleet Replenishment Vessel of 147m in length, to the South African Navy’s Strike Craft and Mine Hunters, Voith Schneider tugs and Mega Luxury Yachts. PRINCE EDWARD GRAVING DOCK • Overall docking length 352.04m • Length on keel blocks 327.66m • Length on bottom 352.04m • Width at entrance on top 33.52m • Inner dock 138.68m • Outer dock 206.9m • Depth at entrance 11m The Prince Edward Graving dock can be divided into two compartments of 206.9m and 138.68m. The graving dock can be emptied in four hours. Electric cranes servicing this dock include a 50 ton crane with a 10 ton crane attached, 24, 15 and 10 ton cranes as well as two 8 ton cranes. DOCK BLOCKS Southern African Shipyards has its own specially constructed dock blocks, which are 2700 mm in height to accommodate the withdrawal of Azimuth Units. In 2014 SAS was awarded the largest single contract ever awarded by TNPA for nine state-of-the-art tugboats, including one of the most powerful harbour crafts in the world. The first of the tugs, which are being built in tandem, will be launched in November 2015 and the last will be handed over during the first quarter of 2018. The latest contract will take the number of tugs built by SAS up to 21. TUGS 1999 To 2003 Five Voith Schneider Tugs for Portnet were built by SAS for SAFBUILD (PTY) LTD, a joint venture between Southern African Shipyards (PTY) LTD and SAFREIGHT (PTY) LTD Length: 30.3 metres Breadth Moulded: 11.0 metres FISHING TRAWLERS Max Draught: 5.0 metres Speed: 12 knots 2008 To 2009 Range: 1800 nautical miles at 12 knots Fishing Trawlers can be constructed in Durban, reassembled, commissioned and launched on site. LINERUNNER (UTILITY BOAT) 2014 Constructed to provide assistance and emergency support to MEGA LUXURY YACHTS tankers calling off Durban, serving the SBM (Single Bay Mooning). 1999 To 2003 Southern African Shipyards completed 14 vessels with a combination of aluminum and steel construction.
