Morawec und F. Samohyl) und wandte sich danach der Orchesterleitung zu. Mit 17 Jahren wurde er Mitglied der Wiener Phil- harmoniker, als deren Konzertmeister er 1961 – 1969 wirkte. Dort gründete er ein eigenes, spä- terhin international berühmtes Streichquartett, das er von 1958 – 1970 führte. 1966 debütierte er als Dirigent bei den Wiener Philharmonikern und wurde danach schon bald von der Wiener Staatsoper und der Volksoper engagiert. 1971 erfolgte seine Ernennung zum Generalmusik- direktor in Duisburg. Zwischen 1975 und 1978 übernahm er die künstlerische Leitung des Nie- derösterreichischen Tonkünstlerorchesters. Über- dies arbeitet er regelmäßig in England, wurde 1977 zum Leiter des Royal Liverpool Philhar- monic Orchestra ernannt und leitete ab 1980 für fünf Jahre das Royal Philharmonic Orchestra London. 1992 übernahm er (bis 1996) die Posi- tion des Chefdirigenten beim Royal Scottish Na- tional Orchestra (jetzt „Conductor Emeritus“ auf Lebenszeit), wirkt seit 1994 zusätzlich als künst- lerischer Leiter der Allgemeinen Musikgesell- schaft Basel, als Generalmusikdirektor des Basler Theaters und als Chefdirigent des Basler Sym- phonischen Orchesters. Er ist Ehrengastdirigent des Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra auf Lebenszeit und gefragter Gastdirigent bei den berühmtesten Klangkörpern und Opernhäusern in aller Welt. 2003 verliehen ihm die Stuttgarter Philharmoniker den Titel „Ehrendirigent“. Zahl- reiche Platteneinspielungen – darunter einige preisgekrönte (Grand Prix du Disque, Charles Cros) – liegen vor, meist bei Decca, EMI und Chandos Records, darunter ebenso die Aufnah- men aller Beethoven-Sinfonien wie das sinfoni- sche Werk von Mendelssohn, Prokofjew und Rachmaninow. 6 Progr/7.AK_10./11.4.2004 23.03.2004 11:12 Uhr Seite 7 (Schw Der Künstler dirigierte 1997 erstmals die Dresdner Philharmonie während einer Tournee durch Po- len, leitete danach immer wieder Konzerte dieses Klangkörpers und führte die Philharmoniker mehrfach bei Tourneen im In- und Ausland. Für sein Wirken wurden ihm hohe Ehrungen zu- teil, darunter in Österreich das „Große silberne Ehrenzeichen für Verdienste um die Republik Österreich“ (1998), eine Auszeichnung, die vor ihm nur Josef Kripps und Herbert von Karajan er- halten hatten, und das „Ehrenkreuz für Wissen- schaft und Kunst“. Das American Biographical Institute verlieh ihm die „Goldene Ehrenmedaille für außergewöhnliche berufliche Tätigkeit“, und das internationale biographische Zentrum der Universität Cambridge ehrte ihn mit der „Gold- medaille für außergewöhnliche Menschen des 20. Jahrhunderts“. Sie gewann höchste Preise bei mehreren interna- tionalen Wettbe- werben und erhielt 1997 den begehrten Gramophone Award Isabelle Faust spielt „Young Artist of the Year“ für ihr CD-Debüt mit die „Dornröschen“- Sonaten von Béla Bartók. Sie konzertierte mit Stradivari aus dem Jahre 1704, zahlreichen namhaften Orchestern. Konzertreisen eine Leihgabe der führten sie ins europäische Ausland, nach Israel, Landesbank Baden- Japan und in die USA. Ihr Repertoire umfaßt die Württemberg. gesamte Bandbreite bis zur Musik unserer Tage. Neben ihrer solistischen Tätigkeit widmet sie sich intensiv der Kammermusik. Regelmäßig wird sie zu internationalen Musikfestspielen wie beispiels- weise nach Helsinki, Lockenhaus, Bad Kissingen, Berlin, Schwetzingen und vielen anderen einge- laden. Zu den regelmäßigen Partnern zählen u. a. F. Boffard, B. Giuranna, E. Kupiec, B. Pergamen- schikow, Chr. Tetzlaff, L. Vogt und T. Zimmer- mann. Mehrere CD-Einspielungen liegen vor, so außer den o. g. Bartók-Werken auch Aufnahmen mit Werken von Bach, Fauré, Haydn (Violin- konzerte), Schumann (Sonaten) und Hartmann (Concerto funebre). Den tief-romantischen Klängen des „böhmischen Musikanten“ Dvorˇák und seines Schülers und Schwiegersohns Josef Suk steht ein Werk des 20. Jahrhunderts gegenüber: Frank Michael Beyers Violinkonzert, ein Werk voller Licht- Klang-Bildern in mannigfachen Metamorpho- sen, einst von Kolja Blacher mit dem Rundfunk- Sinfonie-Orchester Berlin (1993) uraufgeführt, wird es nun bei uns von Isabelle Faust interpre- tiert. Wir erinnern uns gern an das Dresden- Debüt der jungen Geigerin im 5. Philharmo- nischen Konzert im Januar 2002. Josef Suk liebte ebenso wie sein Meister die hei- matliche Volksmusik. Ganz aus diesem Gefühl heraus, wenn auch künstlerisch überhöht und z. B. durch den französischen Impressionismus beeinflußt, entstand seine „Legende von den to- ten Siegern“. In seiner 5. Sinfonie – komponiert 1875 – war es Dvorˇák erstmals gelungen, slawische Elemen- te so zu verarbeiten, daß diese sich organisch in das gesamte musikalische Geschehen einordnen ließen, ohne als Fremdkörper empfunden zu werden, ein für seine weiteren Arbeiten ent- scheidender Schritt. So konnte der Komponist mit seiner „Pastorale“ – als welche diese Sinfonie bald schon gesehen wurde – zu neuen Ufern aufbrechen und eine Brücke schlagen aus über- nommenen Formprinzipien der Wiener Klassik und dem Geist des 19. Jahrhunderts auf dem Wege zu einer nationalen Identität. 9 Progr/7.AK_10./11.4.2004 23.03.2004 11:12 Uhr Seite 10 (Sch Mitglied eines legendären Sterichquartetts und Komponist, der sich der westeuropäischen Josef Suk Moderne annäherte osef Suk gehörte wie Leosˇ Janácˇek und J Víteˇzslav Novák zu den Wegbereitern jener tschechischen Musikergeneration, die allerdings erst nach dem Zweiten Weltkrieg deutlich im eu- ropäischen Rahmen in Erscheinung trat. Er war – frühbegabt, erst elfjährig – an das Prager Konser- vatorium gekommen, studierte zunächst Violine und fand später in Antonín Dvorˇák seinen wich- tigsten Kompositionslehrer. Seither verband ihn eine lebenslange Freundschaft mit seinem Men- tor und späteren Schwiegervater (Heirat mit des- sen Tochter Otylka). Serebrier regularly champions contemporary music, having commissioned the String Quartet No. 4 by Elliot Carter (for his Formed in 1891 as the Scottish Orchestra, and subsequently known as the Scottish National Orchestra before being Festival Miami), and conducted world première performances of music by Rorem, Schuman, Ives, Knudsen, Biser, granted the title Royal at its centenary celebrations in 1991, the Royal Scottish National Orchestra is one of Europe’s and many others. As a composer, Serebrier has won most important awards in the United States, including two leading ensembles.     Dundee Symphony Orchestra is the performing name of Dundee Orchestral Society. The Society was founded in 1893 by a group of enthusiastic amateur performers, and has gone from strength to strength ever since. The only period in the Orchestra's history when it did not perform or rehearse was during the Second World War. The Orchestra is funded through private and charitable donations, subscriptions from members, and by grants from Making Music and the Scottish Arts Council.     RUSSIAN, SOVIET & POST-SOVIET SYMPHONIES A Discography of CDs And LPs Prepared by Michael Herman Sergei Prokofiev (1891-1953) Born in Sontsovka, Yekaterinoslav District, Ukraine. He was a prodigy who played the piano and composed as a child. His formal training began when Sergei Taneyev recommended as his teacher the young composer and pianist Reinhold Glière who spent two summers teaching Prokofiev theory, composition, instrumentation and piano. Then at the St. Petersburg Conservatory he studied theory with Anatol Liadov, orchestration with Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov and conducting with Nikolai Tcherepnin. He went on to become one of Russia's greatest composer, excelling in practically every genre of music. He left the Soviet Union in 1922, touring as a pianist and composing in Western Europe and America, but returned home permanently in 1936.     AN AUTOBIOGRAPHICAL OUTLINE by Steve Elcock I was born in Chesterfeld, Derbyshire, in 1957 and studied at the local grammar school, where I obtained an A Level in music and learnt the violin up to grade 7. Tese are my only musical qualifcations: as a composer I am otherwise self-taught. I began writing around age ffeen and have continued to do so ever since. In 1981 I moved to France, where I work in language services for companies. For a period of about ten years, I conducted the local amateur symphony orchestra, which played some of my early compositions. In 2009 my short orchestral piece Hammering came to the attention of an old friend with whom I had all but lost touch. Mike George is a producer at the BBC and he was able to get the work performed in a BBC Philharmonic studio concert in Manchester (subsequently broadcast), conducted by James MacMillan. Although I was now 52, this was the frst professional performance of any of my pieces. At that concert I met the composer Robin Walker1 and began an e-mail correspondence with him. He was very enthusiastic about my music and one day suggested I might send some scores and mock-ups to Martin Anderson at Toccata Classics. In June 2013, not believing for an instant that it would do any good, I plucked up enough courage to do so, posting him the Tird and Fourth Symphonies and the symphonic poem Wreck. As I expected, there was no reaction throughout the summer months. And then in late August I received the following e-mail from Martin: Your scores have been sitting at my elbow for what I thought was a week or two, waiting for my deadlines to let up for long enough to clear the desk and read and listen.
