Ivanov Introduction vEr thE cEnturiEs of European religious history, Rome served as the ultimate destination for many spiritually rewarding journeys ofO devotion and pious learning. Rarely did a sojourn in Rome turn a devotee into a disillusioned rebel, with one exception: the famous case of the 1511 pilgrimage of a monk named Martin Luther. Another, less known, example was Teofan (Feofan) Prokopovych (1681–1736), a scion of a Kyivan merchant family who studied in the city between 1698 and 1701. Although Prokopovych was one of the hundreds of Ukrainians who * For the support for research and travel involved in the writing of this article, I owe a debt of gratitude to funding provided by the residential fellowship of Herzog August Library, Wolfenbüttel, in 2016; the Scholarly Activity Improvement Fund, provided by the University of Wisconsin-Platteville in 2015; and research travel funding provided by the Boston College History Department in 2013. The faculty and associates of the Harvard Ukrainian Research Institute, where a version of this work was presented at a seminar held on 19 October 2015, offered invaluable comments and criticisms that helped me sharpen my arguments and shape the article’s conceptual framework.

KULTU BOŻEGO I DYSCYPLINY SAKRAMENTÓW EPISKOPATU POLSKI ROK XXII (2016) NR 3 MISTERIUM ZESŁANIA DUCHA ŚWIĘTEGO 2 ZESŁANIE DUCHA ŚWIĘTEGO I OKRES NIEDZIEL ZWYKŁYCH Redakcja: bp Piotr Greger ul. W klimacie trwającego czasu dziękczynienia, odda- jemy do rąk Drogich Czytelników kolejny numer biuletynu „Anamnesis”.

EN FR DE IT ES SK STATEMENT 06.11.2019 THE CATHOLIC CHURCH IN THE EUROPEAN UNION Statement of the Bishops of the Commission of the Episcopates of the European Union (COMECE) on the occasion of the 30th Anniversary of the Fall of the Berlin Wall The fall of the Berlin Wall on the 9th of November 1989 was one of the most important events in European history of the last decades. It was a moment full of emotion. After having been separated by a concrete wall for more than twenty-eight years, people – relatives, friends and neighbours – living in the same city were able to meet each other, to celebrate and to express their joy and hopes. From this moment on the world looked different. This wall was a symbol of the ideological division of Europe and of the whole world. The changes that took place in Hungary in the beginning of 1989, the collapse of the Iron Curtain in April and the first free elections in Poland in June culminated in the fall of the Berlin Wall, an event that opened the way for regaining freedom after more than 40 years of oppressive regimes in Central and Eastern European countries. These efforts owed their success to the commitment of a great number of Europeans expressing constantly but peacefully their deep yearning for political change. It is true that not all the expectations that the fall of the Wall brought forth have been fulfilled. It is also true that the ideologies that were behind the building of the Wall have not fully disappeared in Europe and are still present today in different forms.

The members of the Synod celebrated the 325th anniversary of the restoration of unity of UGCC Przemysl Eparchy with the Roman Apostolic Church Monday, 10 September 2018 The Bishops of the UGCC visited the Przemysl-Warsaw Archeparchy to celebrate the 325th anniversary of the reestablishment of the unity of the Przemysl Eparchy with the Roman Apostolic Church. Such a visit of over forty Bishops of the UGCC from all over the world to Przemysl took place for the first time in history. Metropolitan of Przemysl and Warsaw, Yevhen (Popovich), congratulated all members of the Synod of our Church, as well as Archbishop Salvatore Penacio, the Apostolic Nuncio in Poland, and the Bishops of the Polish Bishopric Conference in his diocese. “Today, in Przemysl is a great holiday,” said the Head of the UGCC during the sermon at the Greek Catholic Cathedral of St. John the Baptist in Przemysl. – “The Kyivan Church has arrived in Przemysl in the person of their Bishops from all over the world to thank the Lord God for the incarnation of the history of our Church and our people. Today we solemnly want to thank God for the fact that He loves us so much.” Speaking about the history of the Przemysl Eparchy, His Beatitude Sviatoslav emphasized that it dates back a long time ago … “This year the Kyivan Church celebrates 1030 years of the Baptism of Rus’-Ukraine. But we know that the history of the Przemysl Eparchy is even more ancient and reaches the mission of the holy Slavic educators Cyril and Methodius – it was set up by their disciples,” added the the Primate.
