On November 6, 2019, China and the European Union (EU) concluded formal negotiations on an EU- China geographical indications (GI) agreement, which will protect 100 Chinese GIs in the European Union and 100 EU GIs in China. The two sides are expected to finalize the agreement before the end of 2020. The timeline, process, and other details about how the agreement will be implemented are not publicly available. This report provides the lists of protected EU and Chinese GIs.

On November 6, 2019, China and the European Union (EU) concluded formal negotiations on an EU- China geographical indications (GI) agreement, which will protect 100 Chinese GIs in the European Union and 100 EU GIs in China. The protected EU GIs include dairy products, wine, beer, and spirits. The two parties announced the end of negotiations via a joint statement signed by China’s Minister of Commerce Zhong Shan and the EU Agriculture and Rural Development Commissioner Philip Hogan, in the presence of the Chinese and French presidents.

China and the European Union will now proceed with their internal approval procedures and are expected to finalize and sign the agreement before the end of 2020. However, the implementation timeline, process, and other details have not been publicly released, including the date when third country products that use the protected GI names will no longer be permitted entry into the China market. Upon the signing of the final agreement, it is likely that the China National Intellectual Property Administration (CNIPA) will publish an official announcement stipulating any transition period and other details of how the agreement will be implemented. The comment period for the protected GIs has concluded, with China rejecting several oppositions submitted by industry.

Once finalized, the agreement will be China’s first comprehensive bilateral GI agreement. Four years after the agreement enters into force, it will be expanded to protect an additional 175 GIs from both sides, which will undergo the same registration procedure as for the first 200 protected GIs.
