ABOUT KUANTAN PORT Kuantan Port Is a Multi-Cargo Port Located in Pahang, in the Peninsular of Malaysia. Being Sheltered from No ABOUT KUANTAN PORT Kuantan Port is a multi-cargo port located in Pahang, in the Peninsular of Malaysia. Being sheltered from North-East monsoon by breakwaters, the port operates whole year round. Kuantan Port serves the hinterland of the East Coast, from Kelantan to Johor. It is a wholly owned subsidiary of IJM Corporation Berhad – a public listed company on Bursa Malaysia. Due to its world class port facilities and services, Kuantan Port has started to establish itself as an important stopover in the global shipping network. Apart from being a multi-cargo port, Kuantan Port had succeeded in strengthening its position as a leading petrochemical hub port and container terminal in the East Coast region. The Development of The New Deep Water Terminal (NDWT) Kuantan Port has moved fast forward in tandem with the escalating economic development of the Eastern Industrial Corridor. The present port has a limited capacity and handle ships only up to 40,000 DWT. Kuantan Port in collaboration with the Government has embarked on a port expansion project to cater for bigger ships up to 200,000 DWT Bulk carrier or 18,000 TEU’s Container Ship. The NDWT Phase 1A is built with a basin depth of 16 meters, 400 meters berth and 20 hectares of cargo yard adjacent to it to accommodate conventional ships and cargoes. The construction of the first phase of the New Deep Water Terminal (NDWT) is expected to be completed 4th Quarter of 2017 and will be able to handle ships up to 150,000 DWT. The development of Phase 1B with a basin depth of 16 meters consisting of 600 metres berth and 25 hectares dry bulk yard will commence operations in late 2018. The dry bulk berth maximum capacity is 26 million tonnes per annum. The development of Phase 2 includes 1km berth extension, 18 meters of water depth and a 47 hectares container terminal to be based on capacity requirements and future demand. MCKIP is the sister park of China- Malaysia Qinzhou Industrial Park (CMQIP), the initiative of Bilateral Investment Corporation, Malaysia- China G to G collaboration of “Two Countries Twin Parks”. MCKIP strategically located in East Coast Economic Region, facing South China Sea, a gateway access to tremendous growth potential of ASEAN and Asia Pacific market, and worldwide markets. With the expansion of Kuantan Port, it acts as the catalyst for MCKIP, where both port and industrial park will create the synergy and dynamic platform for the investors to expand their business to other regions.     16 May 2017 Prospects for the Malaysia-China Kuantan Industrial Park and Kuantan Port Industrial Co-operation under the Belt and Road Initiative In line with the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI), trade co-operation between Malaysia and China has been strengthened by the countries jointly establishing two industrial parks – one in Kuantan in Malaysia, the other in Qinzhou in the Chinese region of Guangxi. Under the context of ‘Two Countries, Twin Parks’ [1], these industrial parks are intended to enhance the regional supply chain management and optimise the flow of trade and investment which runs between Malaysia and China. One of the chief aims of the BRI is to encourage countries along the BRI to improve investment and the ease of trade facilitation. To this end, the BRI attempts to improve the capability of customs clearances and the coordination of cross-border supervision. Malaysia is an important gateway for trade along the 21st Century Maritime Silk Road. At present, China and Malaysia are in the process of forming a cooperative ‘port alliance’, which seeks to fast- track trade flows by raising customs efficiency. It has been reported that, in addition to their contribution to trade cooperation, the new industrial parks could also serve as a testing ground for joint customs clearances between the two countries. In 2007, the Government of Malaysia launched the East Coast Economic Region (ECER) covering the States of Kelantan, Terengganu and Pahang, and the District of Mersing in Johor. ECER is one of the three economic development regions (i.e. Iskandar Malaysia and NCER) in Peninsular Malaysia, established to ensure equitable distribution of wealth across the country. This was done to ensure that the 3-7 Statement of Need nation’s aspirations to become a high-income developed nation is fulfilled. Between 2008 to 2017, a total of RM 111.6 billion of committed private investments were secured that generated 149,400 job opportunities and 31,700 entrepreneurs and business opportunities. As a way forward, in 2019, the ECER Master Plan 2.0 was launched as a reference point to steer the next phase of ECER’s socioeconomic development until year 2025 and beyond. Six strategic initiatives were identified (Figure 3.7) Figure 3.7 Strategic initiatives under ECER Master Plan 2.0 Seven Key Development Areas (KDAs) were identified within ECER (Figure 3.8). Node 3 (Kuala Terengganu Growth Area), which covers the KTCC-Kenyir-Dungun area, is to link with the Lumut-Gua Musang-Kuala Terengganu Sub-Corridor. Although not earmarked in the ECER Masterplan, the Sunrise City project does have a significant contribution to the entire development as it is in close proximity to the KTCC, an 8,000-ha area earmarked as a Tourism Gateway.
