    Martyred Romanian bishops fought communist regime The memory and witness of Romania’s martyred bishops are a reminder that Christians are called to stand firm against ideologies that seek to stifle and suppress their cultural and religious traditions, Pope Francis said. On the last leg of his visit to Romania, the pope June 2 celebrated a Divine Liturgy during which seven Eastern-rite Catholic bishops, who died during a fierce anti-religious campaign waged by the communist regime in Romania, were beatified. “These pastors, martyrs for the faith, re-appropriated and handed down to the Romanian people a precious legacy that we can sum up in two words: freedom and mercy,” the pope said. According to the Vatican, an estimated 60,000 people filled Blaj’s Liberty Field, while some 20,000 people followed the liturgy on big screens set up in various squares around the city. For Eastern Catholics in Romania, the field – located on the grounds of Blaj’s Greek Catholic Theological Seminary – is both a symbol of national pride and sorrow. It was in Liberty Field where, during the 100th anniversary of the Romanian nationalist revolution that communist authorities formerly dissolved the Eastern-rite Romanian Catholic Church. One of the newly beatified bishops, Bishop Ioan Suciu, the apostolic administrator of Fagaras and Alba Iulia, refused to appear at the event, which was perceived by his flock as a sign that they were called to remain steadfast in their faith and follow the path of persecution and martyrdom. Thirty years after the fall of communism, the sun shined brightly and solemn hymns echoed over the field that was once the site of the Eastern Catholic Church’s darkest period.

Pentru apărarea vieții, până la fi nalizarea unui vaccin, protejarea noastră cere respectarea cerințelor de igienă - ceea ce în școlile din trecut se învăța în clasele primare - și o cunoaștere reală despre tot ce ne poate ajuta, cunoaștere venită din partea Sistemului sanitar sau Sistem de sănătate, care are ca scop menținerea, restabilirea și promovarea sănătății. Așa ar trebui să fi e, și totuși nu este așa. O mare parte a populației respectă cerințele normale, o altă parte însă nu numai că nu le respectă, dar susține că virusul nici nu există, neagă pericolul și respinge orice argument medical. Vacanța la mare o demonstrează deplin. Și numărul de infectări crește zilnic. Încercarea prin care trecem, de data aceasta, este de lungă durată și comportamentul nostru devine adesea problematic. În momentele noastre mai grele, să ne amintim de sfatul ce ni-l dă Sf. Josemaria Escriva: ,,Reculege-te…Caută-L pe Dumnezeu în tine și ascultă-L”. Dacă l-ai găsit, ascultă-i cuvântul: ,,Poruncă nouă vă dau vouă: să vă iubiți unii pe alții. Întru aceasta vor cunoaște că sunteți ucenicii mei”.

    Bekanntes aus dem Leben der NS-Opfer Hedwig Löb, Vorderer Rebstock 14, Montabaur: Hier befand sich der Wohnsitz von Hedwig Löb. Hedwig Löb war Witwe. Ihr Mann, Moritz Löb, betrieb eines Eisen- und Ofenhandlung. Auch Hedwig Löb durfte nicht mehr in Montabaur bleiben. Am 11. Februar 1939 war sie in Frankfurt gemeldet. Sie wohnte zuerst in der Karlstraße 19 und ab 4. November 1940 in der Sternstraße 19. Am 1. September 1942 wurde sie durch die Gestapo Frankfurt / Main zum Ghetto Theresienstadt deportiert. Am 29. September 1942 kam sie in ein Vernichtungslager nach Treblinka. Adolf und Betty Heimann mit Tochter Ingeborg, Vorderer Rebstock 23, Mtb: Hier wohnte die Familie Heimann und betrieb ein Ladenlokal für Manufakturwaren. - Nach der Reichspogromnacht mussten die Heimanns ihr kleines Haus zu einem Spottpreis verkaufen, sollten aber vorerst noch in Montabaur bleiben. Adolf und Betty Heimann hatten eine Tochter namens Ingeborg, die psychisch leicht behindert war. Da sie nicht alleine leben konnte, wurde sie in den Kriegsjahren von ihren Eltern getrennt und 1940 in die Jacoby’sche Anstalt für Nerven- und Gemütskranke nach Bendorf-Sayn eingewiesen. Ihre Eltern, Adolf und Betty Heimann, wurden im August 1941 in die ehemalige Bergarbeitersiedlung in Friedrichssegen/Lahn eingewiesen, um dort Zwangsarbeit zu verrichten. Die Männer sortierten Alteisen und Schrott in der zwangsarisierten Firma „Friedrichssegener Eisenhandel“, die Frauen wurden im Ton- und Dachziegelwerk Friedrichssegen bei der Klinkerproduktion eingesetzt. Die Arbeit war körperlich sehr hart und erfolgte unter den allerschlechtesten Bedingungen. Die Unterkünfte waren verkommen, die Lebensbedingungen mehr als primitiv. Adolf und Betty Heimann wurden am 10. Juli 1942 über Frankfurt am Main in das Vernichtungslager Sobibor deportiert und dort ermordet.

It reflects the circumstances of denunciation of the Concordat and enforcement of anti-religious character; it examines the impact of communist antireligious policy and the judicial situation of the united eparchies after December 1, 1948; It shows pastoral and political activity of Cardinal Bishop - Iuliu Hossu; It also reflects and analyzes events related to the suppression and extermination of the Greek Catholic Church Hierarchy in Romania.

    The Holy See APOSTOLIC JOURNEY TO ROMANIA EUCHARISTIC CELEBRATION HOMILY OF HIS HOLINESS JOHN PAUL II St Joseph Latin-Rite Cathedral, Bucharest Saturday, 8 May 1999 1. “Dress yourself and put on your sandals” (Acts 12:8). The angel says these words to the Apostle Peter, whom the first reading shows us confined in prison. Guided by the angel, Peter escaped from prison and regained his freedom. The Lord Jesus also spoke to us of freedom in the Gospel passage we have just heard: “You will know the truth, and the truth will make you free” (Jn 8:32). Those who are listening to him do not understand: “From what slavery must we be freed?”, they ask themselves. And Jesus explains that the most deceptive and repressive slavery is that of sin (cf. Jn 8:34). Only he can free us from that slavery. This is the message that the Church proclaims to the world: Christ is our freedom, because he is the truth. Not an abstract truth, gropingly sought by ever restless human reason. The truth for us is the person of Christ. It is he who told us: “I am the way, and the truth and the life” (Jn 14:6). If the darkness of sin is defeated by the light of life, then there is no slavery that can suppress freedom. 2. You know this truth well, beloved brother Alexandru Todea, Cardinal of the Holy Roman Church, and you, Archbishop Gheorghe Gutiu, because before you, as before Peter, the heavy door of slavery opened by itself and you were given back to your Churches together with many other brothers and sisters, some of whom we have the joy and privilege of greeting and spiritually kissing here at this Divine Liturgy in the Byzantine rite.

    Şapte vieți de sfinți români Monica Broşteanu (n. 5 ianuarie 1948, Broşteni, jud. Suceava). Licenţiată în filologie (engleză–română, 1970) și limbi orientale (arabă–persană, 1978) la Universitatea din Bucureşti şi în teologie (1996, Institutul Teologic Romano-Catolic din Bucureşti), doctor în filologie (2003). A predat la Institutul Teologic Romano-Catolic cursuri de ebraică biblică, teologie sacramentală şi liturgică, ştiinţe biblice. Este conferenţiar universitar la Universitatea din Bucureşti, unde predă cursurile: Coranul şi Biblia: probleme de traducere şi interpretare, Comunităţile creştine din ţările Orientului Mijlociu, Tradiţii textuale (Noul Testament). The views expressed here are those of the author(s). Opening the Fifth Seal Catholic Martyrs and Forces of Religious Competition Rachel M. McCleary and Robert J. Barro Jorge Mario Bergoglio, since becoming Pope Francis in March 2013, is focusing on martyrdom in the Roman Catholic Church. Two months into his pontificate, Francis canonized the 813 martyrs of Otranto, the largest such group in recorded Catholic Church history. Five months later, Francis beatified another large group, 499 martyrs of the Spanish Civil War. Francis continues to emphasize martyrs over confessors, the name given to blessed persons who died of natural causes. In 2019, Francis beatified 39 martyrs and only 6 confessors. As a snapshot of what is happening, within the last four years, 14 persons who died in Guatemala have qualified as blessed martyrs; six were foreign missionaries who served in Guatemala and eight were national lay persons, including one child.1 The missionaries were Oklahoma priest Stanley Rother, the first U.S. born martyr beatified by the Catholic Church, three Missionaries of the Sacred Heart priests, a priest of the Order of Friars Minor, and James Miller, of the De La Salle Brothers of the Christian Schools and the last Vatican beatification for 2019.
