It has sadly been brought to my notice as Church Warden of Catfield Church that although we have asked many times for dog owners to be responsible for their dogs while walking and following the footpath through the churchyard, dog mess is still appearing in the churchyard.

I know that many people are responsible but a quick reminder that all dogs must be kept on a lead and owners need to have a bag in their pocket and make sure that dog mess in the event of an accident is completely cleared. A doggy bin will soon be available on the church corner so there really will not be an excuse.

You are always welcome to come into the churchyard or walk into the church, it is unlocked all day, but the graves are out of bounds unless you are visiting a grave of a loved one and of course no dog should be in the churchyard unless accompanied by an owner. The dog warden has been informed and as I’m sure you are aware there is a hefty fine for allowing your dog to fowl in a public space.

I would also like to publically apologise to Laura and Steve Dove. Steve went to visit Bethany’s grave only to find dog faeces on top of their daughter’s grave. Steve has sent the photograph for inclusion in this article. Unfortunately this is not the first incident but I would love to think it will be the last.

Are you antibiotic aware? Taking antibiotics when you don’t need them puts you and your family at risk. Taking antibiotics encourages harmful bacteria that live inside you to become resistant. That means that antibiotics may not work when you really need them. This puts you and your family at risk of a more severe or longer illness. Take your doctor or nurse’s advice when it comes to antibiotics and keep antibiotics working. www.antibioticguardian.com/keep-antibiotics-working

7 NATURE NOTES for October by J. & C. As the nights draw in closer as autumn turns to winter, look to the skies in the late afternoon for the some of the year's most spectacular sunsets. The sky arches over the flat land of the Broads, and on a clear night, the stars are dazzling. Nature reserves, being far away from the light pollution of the towns and cities, can be the best places for starwatching. Which constellations can you pick out amongst the clusters of stars?

Nature can be right on your doorstep as well. Take an early morning stroll around the garden to see intricately built spider webs glistening with dew covering the lawn and hedgerows. And look out for our only spiny mammal, the hedgehog. The characteristically long snout with a black nose, short tail, small ears and approximately 6,000 spines makes hedgehogs easy to identify. At this time of the year you can help hedgehogs by creating hibernation spots. This can be a box or an undisturbed log pile. Hedgehogs also love the warmth of compost heaps, which also provide hedgehogs with food. Please remember to check bonfires for hedgehogs before setting light to them

Park rangers at Pensthorpe Natural Park in say they are 'tickled pink' after discovering flamingo eggs in their bird reserve. Last year, twenty new flamingos were introduced to the previous flock of 29, with the hopes that they would begin to breed. And now, for the first time in 15 years, flamingo eggs have been discovered on site. The first egg was laid by a 14-year old female flamingo and has been carefully swapped for a wooden ‘dummy’ egg in order to protect it. Since then, the birds have got the hang of it and more eggs have been found. The eggs will be incubated and cared for by park staff to give it the best chance of survival.

Horse chestnut leaf-mining moth has spread rapidly across since it was first identified as present in Britain from Wimbledon in 2002. The effect on the appearance of horse chestnut trees in late summer can be profound. Horse chestnut leaf-mining moth has spread rapidly since it was first identified as present in Britain from Wimbledon in 2002. Horse chestnut leaf-miner is a small moth with caterpillars that feed inside horse chestnut leaves, causing brown or white blotch mines to develop between the leaf veins. Horse chestnut trees appear to tolerate the moth and so control is not necessary or in most cases practical.

Our case this month is a 13 year old oriental cat called Pippin. Pippin happens to belong to a member of our family and had spent much of the summer in France where she seemed very content enjoying the fresh air and sunshine. Unfortunately on her journey home she stopped eating and lost a dramatic amount of weight in a short space of time. Once she was home she was brought in to the surgery and we could see she had become jaundiced and suddenly very weak. Blood tests demonstrated a high white blood cell count and raised liver enzymes so we put her on a drip and performed an ultrasound examination of her abdomen. Unfortunately, the ultrasound scan demonstrated a large mass within her liver, however, the rest of her organs and internal lymph nodes were largely normal. In order to give us more information we took ultrasound guided needle samples of the mass to provide us with more information. These samples are very small, but can be taken under sedation, without the need for general anaesthetics or invasive surgical proceedures. They identified that Pippin has a form of liver cancer, but hopefully not an aggressive form. Due to its position in the middle of the liver it would not be possible to remove the whole mass so she was started on medications to treat the inflammation within the liver. Within a few days she was eating again, behaving like her normal self and is no longer jaundiced. Although her long term prognosis is still guarded we are already a month on and she is coping well with an excellent quality of life. Fingers crossed she continues to do well for as long as possible, but it is a good reminder of how well patients can do sometimes even when they look to be on their way out.

October, probably more than any other month, conjures up particular images, artistic and poetic. We think of a “Season of mists and mellow fruitfulness”, of beautiful colours in the trees and hedgerows, conkers and acorns, geese flying in formation above us, putting on warmer clothes and turning on the central heating. For some of us, it is the end of summer with the dreaded prospect of darkness and cold ahead and an endless wait for the spring. For others, it is the outcome of a lovely summer which has left us with bumper crops, many of which we have made into jams and pickles, which we celebrate at our Harvest Festivals. In our parishes it is a time of change yet again as we wish God speed to Deborah and Michael, we prepare for another period of vacancy or interregnum as it is known in church circles. We are lucky to be able to have a group of Authorised Worship Assistants, commonly called AWA’s to lead some of our services. We can rely on the support of Catherine Dobson, our Rural Dean and the very valuable assistance of a wonderful collection of retired vicars who have seen fit to come and enjoy the beauty of the Broadland area and share God’s message with us and help us on our journey of faith. We pray for our four parishes that they will move forward as a Benefice and may we assure you that each church is there to support you all in the months and years ahead.

Bethany Jayne Dove 21st May 2001 - 22nd July 2019

Sadly on 22nd July, Beth who had not long turned 18, was tragically killed in a car accident at Repps. Beth was brought up in Catfield from the age of 6 months and had attended Catfield Kittens and Primary, Stalham Junior and Broadland High School, finishing at City College completing the Public Services Course.

At the age of 16 Beth followed in our footsteps gaining her CBT which allowed her to ride her 50cc Moped, giving her more independence. At 17 Beth was able to upgrade her motorbike to a Honda CBF 125cc and she also started driving lessons which she passed and gained her full licence in December 2018. Beth was a loud, bright, fun loving girl who managed to live her limited life to the full, going out on her motorbike day after day, night after night with her friends.

In May this year we took Beth to Cyprus to celebrate her 18th birthday along with her step-brother Lewis. This has given us some valuable long lasting memories that we will cherish forever.

On 16th August Beth was laid to rest at All Saints Church, Catfield where the Rev Deborah Hamilton-Grey conducted a beautiful modern service which reflected Beth and her personality. Beth’s dad and I would like to thank everyone for their help in giving Beth such a wonderful service including the church wardens, Murrell Cork and Rev Deborah Hamilton-Grey.

On Sunday 1st September two of Beth’s biker friends arranged a memorial ride from Norwich to which was attended by over 50 bikers including us, Beth’s parents, on our bikes. This was an amazing day and I would like to thank all who attended.

Beth has now left our lives but she will live on in our memories forever.

A notice of celebration for the life James Edward Rogers from Margaret Rogers and family:

Mr James Edward Rogers was born on the 15th September 1936 in Dublin Ireland and sadly died at the James Paget Hospital on the 27th July 2019. He was 82 years old.

Jim as he was known was born in Dublin but came to when he was 6 weeks old. He lived with his mum Julia, father Patrick and brothers Jack and Douglas in Enfield Middlesex.

He met Margaret Draper when she was 16 and he was 17 years old. They married on the 15th March 1958 and were married for 62 years. They had 2 children Gail and Jamie ( Jamie sadly is no longer with us)

He spent many years in various roles but his passion was his singer/compere days and he spent many years in the pubs.He was Landlord at the Golden Lion Public House in London Colney for 9 years, running this with Margaret, Gail and Barry.

The whole family moved to Stalham in 1993 with the addition of his Granddaughter Jamie-Ann. In 1997 the whole family moved to Catfield living just 4 doors away from each other.

Jim was known around the village as The Dog Man of Catfield. He walked miles every day with his dog and shepherds crook and spoke to every one he met wearing his ellow coat.

Unfortunately 4 years ago Jim was diagnosed with Vascular/Lewy Bodies Dementia and was in and out of hospital. His funeral was on the 20th August 2019 at Cromer Crematorium.

Thank you to all who attended the funeral and to Tracey and her team at Stalham Co Op and to Matthew Gooch the Funeral Celebrant . We would like to thank Scott and Gail at The Crown for the buffet and support.

Roger Crook 1952 – 2019

Roger was born in 1952 with his childhood days and early education spent in Herne Bay, Kent. His ambition as a young man was to work with healthcare services and eventually he became a Podiatrist – an advanced chiropodist – working in Maidstone. Here he married and had two children. Unfortunately, his marriage did not succeed and he found himself doing similar work at the Patrick Stead Hospital in Halesworth and in Beccles, Suffolk. It was here that he met Ros and a relationship developed which was to last until Roger died earlier this year.

Roger enjoyed playing and following cricket, also spending time with his camera and his hobby of photography. Roger and Ros moved to Catfield two and a half years ago but unfortunately, Roger’s health deteriorated and after intense treatment for a cancer related condition, died on 6th July.

Over the past few months of terminal illness, Roger’s positive approach was immense and an inspiration for those of us who knew him.

Catfield Skydivers update

After the final donations were counted, the amount raised by the Catfield Skydivers has risen to £2,824.42 Many congratulations and thanks to them all, and to those of you who have donated so generously. All the money has been sent to the Norfolk Big C Cancer charity. Last month’s magazine stated that they had jumped from 1,300 feet. This should of course have read 13,000 feet, and we apologise for the error.

13 AN EXTRACT OF THE DRAFT MINUTES OF THE CATFIELD PARISH COUNCIL MEETING HELD ON WEDNESDAY 4th SEPTEMBER 2019 IN THE VILLAGE HALL

Milestones Presentation: John Enser, Managing Director and James O’Brien, Hospital Manager, from Milestones attended the meeting to inform the community about their facility. Mr Enser thanked the Parish Council for inviting them and thanked Mr Gardiner for his participation with them. Mr Enser explained that the Atara Project had been active since 2006 at the Salhouse site, the facility is specifically for women with mental health needs. They provide a service which is difficult to access in mainstream healthcare. The hospital outgrew the Salhouse building. There are ten beds in the main hospital and 8 flats in the Mews. The Mews flats will provide a pathway for the women residents to engage with the local community and be independent. The residents come from Norfolk and Suffolk so they can be nearer to their families. It isa locked environment with a high fence, some of the patients can come and go as they please. They pose no risk to the community and are assessed before they go into the community. There are currently eight residents in the hospital and two in the flats. Three of the residents are detained under the Mental Health Act, the rest are informal. There is a range of staff, doctors, nurses, occupational and physical therapist plus support workers. Public Forum: Lindsay Ogden stated that the seagulls which are nesting at Trend are noisy and intrusive, the clerk will contact Trend to see what can be done. Matters Arising: It was agree to position the new dog poo bin opposite the War Memorial on the other site of the road. The clerk will contact Mr Shearing as this would be adjacent to his land. Planning: The planning application for land adjacent to the Limes has been withdrawn. A new planning application PF/19/1387 for demolition of barn and erection of two-storey dwelling, temporary siting of a caravan on the land has been received. It was agreed to ask for an extension of time to discuss this application. A site notice has not been put up so the neighbours were not aware of the application. This application will be discussed again at the next meeting. All Saints Church: The Rector gave her last service on Sunday but she is still in post until 17th September. Poors Trust: Mr Beckley stated that there are signs to go up on the gates across the lokes. The gates had to be put up to stop squatters accessing the land. The signs indicate that a pathway can be used. Highways: An email had been received from Gordon Daniels regarding the footpath at Parkers Close. The footpath is very uneven with tree roots growing through it making the footpath dangerous to pedestrians. This will be passed on to Highways. The date of the next meeting was set for Wednesday 2nd October at 7.30pm in the village hall. ——— Two representatives from Victory Housing will attend the next Parish Council meeting on Wednesday 2nd October at 7.30pm in the village hall as they would like to discuss their proposals for new housing in Lea Road. Parishioners are welcome to attend the meeting.

A full copy of the draft minutes can be obtained from the Parish Clerk. An extract of the minutes can also be viewed on the village website www.catfield.org.uk 14 FARMING NEWS by A.W.A. - October 2019 Last year I wrote “Autumn cereal drilling is just round the corner, this will be the last year we can use Neonicotinoid seed dressings. So this time next year we will be destroying all the green stubbles, grass fields and other sites where aphids live as these insects spread cereal viruses”. Looking around Norfolk, this appears to be the strategy every farmer is using to control aphids. Within a few days there will not be many habitats left for aphids and then the trouble will start, letters to the EDP, rubbish on the Internet, calls for MP’s to get involved but it will be too late. I’m sure when the EU banned Neonicotinoids they did not realise what they had done and what effect it would have on the Countryside. Don’t blame the farmers; they are just reacting to Government Policy. Out of interest Germany has just banned Glyphosate (Roundup). There may be an alternative just round the corner but the net effect is to increase the number of cultivations to control weeds. Min-till will disappear and the net effect will be lower yields, higher prices and less stewardship- not quite what the EU wanted. We have the NFU trying to get to zero carbon farming and the EU working in the opposite direction forcing higher carbon loading on agriculture. The latest fad is giving beef farmers a hard time because the carbon footprint of a kilo of beef protein is higher than that of a kilo of bean protein, we might have a better diet being vegan or vegetarian and do our bit for saving the World but the EU signed up for 70,000 extra tonnes of beef tariff free from South America. Not only is this encouraging farmers in South America to increase production by clearing land, the policy is encouraging a worse diet, so we are led to believe. One business in America is now selling meat products disguised as vegetables; you can even go on their web site so that Veggies can listen to the sounds of bacon frying. So why are we listening to a small group of people who eat beans? The rest of us don’t care and eat a balanced diet. Last month I reported my fat lambs went to market. I was called away just after we delivered them and missed the sale. To my surprise one was the top lamb in the market. Harvest is finished, deliveries made and payments have been received, it’s quite satisfying when everything has gone like clockwork for the last six weeks. The surprise of the year were beans which despite the hungry Red Deer attempts to fatten up on them yielded well with lots of surplus, over contract, beans to sell. The quality is good enough to send them to Ellingham to be cleaned by very clever machines which can spot defects like holed beans or dis-coloured beans and remove them, this makes the crop suitable for export to China. I wonder what the Carbon Footprint on that is and why our Veggie friends don’t eat them here. Wheat and Malting barley prices have fallen over the last two months to a point where I don’t actually think they are currently wanted in the market place. Some merchants with storage have been able to move crops while others have not. When those stores are full, I can see prices falling even further. As a farmer, marketing crops is similar to gambling, I think I’m wise enough that when I see a price that leaves a margin, I take it. So recently I received a large cheque for correctly predicting/gambling that the November Wheat Futures Price would fall. Also, most of my farmers have been selling wheat off the field for £30-40/tonne over market price and have done rather well this harvest. Wheat in store is all sold for May 2020 before the price fell. Don’t mention the wilted sugar beet to me! 15 Health & Wellbeing - When did you last get out of breath?

Boost Your Heart Health Keeping your heart healthy isn’t just about keeping your weight under control, eating the healthy foods and warding off the artery damage from high cholesterol, high blood sugar and high blood pressure that can lead to heart attack or stroke. Exercising the heart by adding in some physical activity is a major step toward good heart health. It’s one of your most effective tools for strengthening the heart muscle. The stronger your heart is the more power it has in one heartbeat and so needs to beat less times a minute to keep the blood flowing around the body. I have worked with clients who’s resting heart rate (pulse) has been above 80 beats per minute and after just a few weeks of exercise the heart gets strong and that rate changes, coming down to the 60s and some even in the 50s. Getting Out of Breath So when did you last get out of breath? Walking up some stairs? Running for the bus? Chasing the grandchildren round the garden? Adding in some aerobic exercise not only helps to improve strength of your heart it also has other major health benefits, it helps reduce blood pressure, improves your vascular function, helps prevent cardio diseases such as heart attacks and strokes and also helps reduce the risk of type 2 diabetes. And there are also benefits for your respiratory system, it will improve your lung capacity and increase your blood flow to your lungs, allowing the lungs to deliver more oxygen to the blood. Proceed with Caution Please take care when changing or introducing a new exercise routine. Consult your doctor if you are on any medication for existing conditions. Also consult a personal trainer who can introduce you to a programme to suit you. If you haven’t been very active or got your heart rate up in a long time then begin slowly and for shorter periods of time. You should always keep within your target heart rate zone (more information on heart rate zones next month) How Much Exercise & What Exercise? That really does depend on you, taking into account different factors of age, ability, lifestyle and time factors. So consulting an expert is the best way to find out what is best for you. Any exercise is better than no exercise. The types of exercise are brisk walking, running, swimming, cycling, playing tennis etc. Anything that gets the heart-pumping and you enjoy. Maybe you thought of a new challenge after last month’s article so you are already on the way to adding in some aerobic exercise into your life. Jane Turner www.janeturner.co.uk

Shoreline Report for October: Catfield Times change and we are changing some of the things we do at Shoreline. When we began collecting food for the Foodbank charity several years ago, the only place we could take the goods for distribution, was Norwich. Over the years, other centres have opened up including major Supermarkets but, thanks to the generosity of the owners, you will still be able to put your donated goods in the collecting box at Catfield Stores until the end of December. For the time being, we will continue to pay in pennies for Wateraid and, as long as anyone wishes to contribute wrapped gifts to the St. Martin’s Housing Trust in the usual manner at Christmas, we will continue to take them into Norwich with 30th November being the final date for donations. If you wish to ask questions about any of this, or want to have Christmas gifts or pennies collected in the future, please ring Julia Morris 598538 or Anita Watson 598759. We cannot thank you enough for the compassion, generosity and support you have shown to the causes we have supported. Thank you

Autumn at the Museum of the Broads

This autumn we will be offering boat trips every day we are open - Sunday to Fridays. Tuesdays to Thursdays you can catch a bit of steam with our Victorian Launch Falcon. On Fridays, Sundays and Mondays, why not catch our brand new electric launch Marsh Harrier?

The railway exhibition has been very popular this year and it’s been great to see both Honing Station and Station putting on events for Heritage open days in September. Why not come along and find out more about the railway which brought both holidaymakers and was also used for evacuees and troops. It’s a fascinating story and this is your last chance as we close on Fri 01 November.
