UK Census on April 2Nd 1911 UK Census on April 2nd 1911 The results of searching 'UK Census on Line' in Norfolk and Suffolk for the occupation 'wherryman', plus Occupation Code 545 - 'bargeman', 'lighterman' 'waterman', as well as boatman and boat builder. This includes searching 'wherry' as sometimes the occupation is listed as 'wherry man', etc. General This was the most detailed census up to that time. The questions asked were: Name, Age, Sex, Occupation, Address, Place of Birth, Relation to Head [of household], Marital Status, Employment Status, Nationality, Duration of current marriage, Number of children born, living, died. Where a son has followed his father as a wherryman or wherry builder, and both were at home on census night, I have made separate entries for each. There is not a single instance of a wife or family on board. Marriages in column 1 refer only to the current marriage. See the 'Census Information Pages' on the website 'Find My Past' for an excellent explanation of much of this. In Institutions like the County Lunatic Asylum, Thorpe St Andrew, inmates are recorded by their initials only, so the last initial is in place alphabetically here. I have searched the Commonwealth War Graves Commission website cwgc.org for all the men listed below aged 14 - 35 and made footnotes 2 for those I found who were killed in WWI. 1 2 3 = See notes at end of Table. See also separate list '1911 Wherries' for details recorded on 'Schedule for Vessels' Census forms, ie those on wherries on census night. Places of Birth and Residence All places mentioned were in Norfolk unless otherwise stated. Southtown was added to Yarmouth in 1681, Gorleston became part of Norfolk in 1835 and Fritton, Belton, Burgh Castle and Hopton in 1974 were added in 1974. Lowestoft remains firmly in Suffolk. Only Frederick Lambert is recorded as a wherryman on the Southwold to Halesworth Blyth Navigation. Nch = Norwich GY = Great Yarmouth S = Suffolk General Abbreviations ag lab = agricultural labourer bdr = boarder dom ser = domestic servant gen = general hkp = housekeeper italic = name of wherry lab = labourer lvg = living nk = not known OAP = Old Age Pensioner (from 1909) X in Col 1 = His mark (could not sign) Relations b-i-l = brother-in-law bn = born chn = children dau = daughter d-i-l = daughter-in-law f-i-l = father-in-law gd-dau = grand-daughter gd-son = grand-son ma = mother marr = married m-i-l = mother-in-law pa = father s-i-l = son/sister-in-law sgl = single wid = widow(er) Occupation Column at home = 'carying on trade or industry at home' GCC = General Carrying Company GER = Great Eastern Railway own account = 'neither employing others nor working for a trade employer' S&P = Steward & Paterson IMC = Ice Manufacturing Company worker = 'working for an employer' GSN = General Steam Navigation Company employer = 'employing persons other than domestic servants' Wherryman is not mentioned in the list of categories; see list at end Comments Column 'British Subject / Naturalised British Subject / Foreigner' - This column on the census is rarely filled in, so assume British Subject unless noted in the Comments column. The 'totally deaf, deaf & dumb, totally blind, lunatic, imbecile, feeble-minded' descriptions are all included in the Comments column. Beware The search terms 'waterman', 'boatman', etc are not proof of connection with wherries, but results are included where place of residence, family name, mentions in books etc might indicate it. There were mistakes made transfering information from the household forms (destroyed after being copied) to the enumerators' forms (available on line); there were many mistakes made in indexing for the digitised version, and there are sure to have been mistakes made by me, both reading and typping. Corrections and omissions please to [email protected] Thanks if you do. Please do not take this list as exhaustive or infallible. [ ] Editorial comment or correction. (?) Established readers will notice that it’s now possible to advertise in Outlook: that is helping to fund the more striking change to a cover printed in colour! Colour speaks to us of the diversity and richness of the world. On a grey winter’s day splashes of colour, such as the yellow of hazel catkins or winter jasmine, lift our spirits and are a foretaste of life to come.

  • Norfolk Through a Lens
NORFOLK THROUGH A LENS A guide to the Photographic Collections held by Norfolk Library & Information Service 2 NORFOLK THROUGH A LENS A guide to the Photographic Collections held by Norfolk Library & Information Service History and Background The systematic collecting of photographs of Norfolk really began in 1913 when the Norfolk Photographic Survey was formed, although there are many images in the collection which date from shortly after the invention of photography (during the 1840s) and a great deal which are late Victorian. In less than one year over a thousand photographs were deposited in Norwich Library and by the mid- 1990s the collection had expanded to 30,000 prints and a similar number of negatives. The devastating Norwich library fire of 1994 destroyed around 15,000 Norwich prints, some of which were early images. Fortunately, many of the most important images were copied before the fire and those copies have since been purchased and returned to the library holdings. In 1999 a very successful public appeal was launched to replace parts of the lost archive and expand the collection. Today the collection (which was based upon the survey) contains a huge variety of material from amateur and informal work to commercial pictures. This includes newspaper reportage, portraiture, building and landscape surveys, tourism and advertising. There is work by the pioneers of photography in the region; there are collections by talented and dedicated amateurs as well as professional art photographers and early female practitioners such as Olive Edis, Viola Grimes and Edith Flowerdew. More recent images of Norfolk life are now beginning to filter in, such as a village survey of Ashwellthorpe by Richard Tilbrook from 1977, groups of Norwich punks and Norfolk fairs from the 1980s by Paul Harley and re-development images post 1990s.

  • Parish Registers and Transcripts in the Norfolk Record Office
Parish Registers and Transcripts in the Norfolk Record Office This list summarises the Norfolk Record Office’s (NRO’s) holdings of parish (Church of England) registers and of transcripts and other copies of them. Parish Registers The NRO holds registers of baptisms, marriages, burials and banns of marriage for most parishes in the Diocese of Norwich (including Suffolk parishes in and near Lowestoft in the deanery of Lothingland) and part of the Diocese of Ely in south-west Norfolk (parishes in the deanery of Fincham and Feltwell). Some Norfolk parish records remain in the churches, especially more recent registers, which may be still in use. In the extreme west of the county, records for parishes in the deanery of Wisbech Lynn Marshland are deposited in the Wisbech and Fenland Museum, whilst Welney parish records are at the Cambridgeshire Record Office. The covering dates of registers in the following list do not conceal any gaps of more than ten years; for the populous urban parishes (such as Great Yarmouth) smaller gaps are indicated. Whenever microfiche or microfilm copies are available they must be used in place of the original registers, some of which are unfit for production. A few parish registers have been digitally photographed and the images are available on computers in the NRO's searchroom. The digital images were produced as a result of partnership projects with other groups and organizations, so we are not able to supply copies of whole registers (either as hard copies or on CD or in any other digital format), although in most cases we have permission to provide printout copies of individual entries.
