Bulletin 128 (February 2015)_2010 Report and Accounts.qxd 26/02/2015 09:19 Page 544 Monumental Brass Society 544 MEETING REPORTS Cirencester, Gloucestershire – 27th September 2014 St. John the Baptist, Cirencester, the largest parish church in Gloucestershire, was the venue for this Study Day The church boasts sixteen medieval brasses, many of which were removed from the chancel by Sir George Gilbert Scott and are now to be found in the Trinity Chapel at the east end of the north aisle and in the Lady Chapel. In 1457 John Chedworth, a native of Cirencester who died as Bishop of Lincoln in 1471, gave money for four priests to celebrate his chantry at the altar of St. Nicholas and St. Catherine in the chapel now dedicated to both saints. Chedworth was buried in Lincoln Cathedral and commemorated by an elaborate (but now lost) memorial brass. The bishop thus benefited from two different commemorative arenas, and it was the first speaker, Miriam Gill, who introduced us to his devotion at Cirencester with her talk on The Chantry Chapel of Bishop Chedworth. Dr. Gill drew our attention to the wall paintings which include an image of St. Nicholas, produced with very expensive pigments and shown on a background of damask design and a small panel of early 14th century roundels, an image of St.

    Parish Registers and Transcripts in the Norfolk Record Office This list summarises the Norfolk Record Office’s (NRO’s) holdings of parish (Church of England) registers and of transcripts and other copies of them. Parish Registers The NRO holds registers of baptisms, marriages, burials and banns of marriage for most parishes in the Diocese of Norwich (including Suffolk parishes in and near Lowestoft in the deanery of Lothingland) and part of the Diocese of Ely in south-west Norfolk (parishes in the deanery of Fincham and Feltwell). Some Norfolk parish records remain in the churches, especially more recent registers, which may be still in use. In the extreme west of the county, records for parishes in the deanery of Wisbech Lynn Marshland are deposited in the Wisbech and Fenland Museum, whilst Welney parish records are at the Cambridgeshire Record Office. The covering dates of registers in the following list do not conceal any gaps of more than ten years; for the populous urban parishes (such as Great Yarmouth) smaller gaps are indicated. Whenever microfiche or microfilm copies are available they must be used in place of the original registers, some of which are unfit for production. A few parish registers have been digitally photographed and the images are available on computers in the NRO's searchroom. The digital images were produced as a result of partnership projects with other groups and organizations, so we are not able to supply copies of whole registers (either as hard copies or on CD or in any other digital format), although in most cases we have permission to provide printout copies of individual entries.

    Welcome to the North Norfolk Workout Project! Please find, along with this letter, programmes up to the end of June for our exciting FREE scheme where volunteers can become fitter and healthier by taking part in conservation activities to improve our local environment - the North Norfolk Workout Project. You do NOT have to be fit or experienced to join us, in fact we welcome people who have a variety of physical and mental health conditions, and/or limited mobility. Once frogspawn starts appearing in ponds, and the bird nesting season begins, we will take the opportunity to have a bit of a break from some of the scrub clearance work we have been doing over winter, and start to take a look around us at some of the wonders of nature locally. As you can see on the attached/enclosed programmes, there will be a mixture of seeing the effects of our hard work at our regular sites, and visiting some glorious new places too. We have wildlife spotting walks in Mannington, Catfield (possibly seeing swallowtail butterflies), Buxton, East Ruston, Cley and Holkham , and we have outside specialists coming to teach us biological surveying at Kelling Heath and Gresham Churchyard. There will also be a wild food gathering session around Holt Country Park, and a session on use and maintenance of tools (volunteer input welcome!) at Pigneys Wood. We do still have quite a variety of practical work as always, and there are even OPAL climate surveys to fit in as well. For our regular tasks you can choose to join in on any Monday, Thursday or Friday, 1-4pm.

In addition copies of register entries of objections are sent to local authorities holding copies of the registrations to which they relate. The noting of an objection on the register does not mean that it is officially admitted to be correct, and it has no immediate effect on the registration. Wherry names are rarely recorded. Answers (rare) to the question 'Whether blind or deaf and dumb' are included in the 'Comments' column below. Only 15 'wherrymen' were noted in Norfolk and one in Suffolk. I have not distinguished between the descriptions 'waterman' and 'water man' etc. Occupations Robert Simper says, in Norfolk Rivers and Harbours (1996), 'In recent times the crew of a wherry have been called skipper and mate, but the old practice was to call them wherryman and waterman.' From my research I would say that 'waterman' could include both skipper and mate.

  • East Ruston, Norfolk, 1851
    EAST RUSTON, NORFOLK, 1851 Introduction East Ruston is a village in north-east Norfolk, situated between North Walsham and Stalham. This paper aims to create a portrait of East Ruston in 1851. In the mid-nineteenth century, most of the working population of East Ruston was engaged in agriculture. There were 2,494 acres of land, most of which was arable, but there was also pasture, showing that animals as well as crops were farmed. 1 In 1810, the East Ruston Inclosure Award 2 allotted about 300 acres of land to the Trustees of the Poor, and the poor were able to cut fuel and pasture their cattle on it. 3 In 1851 there were 183 heads of household 4 and 845 inhabitants. The most common occupation by far was agricultural labourer, followed by farmer. Some also worked on the water in such occupations as waterman, boatman and fisherman. In 1825-6 the North Walsham and Dilham Canal was constructed, linked to the River Ant, and a staithe was built at East Ruston, behind Chapel Road, which was used for landing coals etc. 5 There was also a corn mill – East Ruston postmill – which dated from at least the eighteenth century. In the early part of the nineteenth century, it was owned by Rudd Turner, who is best known for killing his wife and baby in 1831. 6 East Ruston towermill, which is depicted on the East Ruston village sign, was built in 1868. 7 Heads of Household The 1851 census shows that all but two of the 183 heads of household were born in Norfolk, 71 of them in East Ruston itself.
