    Donation of the Month Object: Steiff Teddy Bear Catalog #: 1978.67.8 Donor: Marcia Newitt Estate Arctophily — the love of teddy bears — began in November 1902 when President Theodore Roosevelt traveled to Mississippi to help settle a border dispute with Louisiana. While there his hosts took him bear hunting. After three days of roughing it with no game in sight, the guides used dogs to track and injure an old she-bear. Tying the ailing animal to a tree, they summoned the president. But Roosevelt decided that it would be unsportsmanlike to kill the captive bear; instead he ordered it be put down to end its suffering. And that was how the legend of Teddy’s bear was born. When Washington Post political cartoonist Clifford Berryman heard the story, he sketched a cartoon titled “Drawing the Line in Mississippi,” a phrase which played up both the border dispute as well as Roosevelt’s refusal to shoot a captive bear. In the cartoon a man holds a rope tied around the throat of an adult bear while TR stands with his rifle, his back turned against the sad scene and his hand held out as if to stop what was happening. Berryman’s cartoon immediately captured the public’s attention. In an effort to capitalize on its popularity and further its already-powerful message, his subsequent renderings depicted a cute bear cub rather than an old black bear. It is the image of this baby bear that is most often recalled when folks discuss the history of teddy bears. When Russian immigrants Morris and Rose Michtom saw the cartoon, they were inspired to put a stuffed bear that Rose had made in the window of their of Brooklyn stationary and novelty store.

    Washington Winter Wonderland — November 2010 to January 2011 Our holiday exhibit featured over one hundred and thirty vintage Steiff stuffed toy animals in whimsical displays throughout the Museum. Steiff is best known as the company that invented the Teddy bear. Local designers, Chris Zaima and Anne Chapin, decorated beautiful Christmas trees as well. John Pitts, former Scenic Artist at The Metropolitan Opera in New York City, painted a beautiful winter mural on the walls of the Museum. This enchanting exhibit ran from Thanksgiving 2010 through January 30, 2011. The exhibit was reviewed here. Steiff Appraisal Day — January 22, 2011 The public was invited to bring their Steiff bears and animals to the Museum to be evaluated by Sandy Booth and Shelley Smith, both long-time collectors whose toys were on display in the current exhibit. They answered questions and verbally appraised items for estimated age and value. This fun, informal event was free. Dedication of the Georgianna Middlebrook Room — November 28, 2010 We dedicated the main entrance gallery in the Museum in honor of Georgianna Middlebrook, a long-time Washington resident and supporter of the Gunn. The Georgianna Middlebrook Room will be dedicated to Washington history. A History of the Washington Agricultural Fair The Georgianna Middlebrook Room is dedicated to Washington history. Incorporated in 1779, Washington, Connecticut boasts a rich and diverse history. Through pictures, stories and artifacts, visitors are brought on a journey through Washington's unique history in this room, starting 10,000 years ago with the first inhabitants of the area, the Native Americans, to the modern day.

First of all, my warmest thanks to everyone who took part. The results of the survey were not available as we went to press. However, we expect them to be representative, and we will publish them in the August issue, when we will also publish the names of the winners of the 10 prizes. Now to our latest edition. The highlight is the Teddy bear on the cover page. He belongs to the Margarete Steiff Edition series, which after a break lasting a number of years continued last year with Teddy bear “Franz”. However, for various reasons the item was not distributed through the same channels as the earlier models. So it gives me particular pleasure that we are able to present the new edition to you exclusively this year, and with a pre-purchase right. Despite the very low number issued, we are returning to the proven processing method used in previous years.
