Often, people's associations with their first Steiff animal go right back to their childhoods. I now have a much clearer vision of how my collection should look. I love all of my bears, but have simply run out of room and want to cut back a large percentage, so I can re-grow it with my current knowledge. So it’s time to call the auctioneers in, I can’t think of any safer hands to pass them onto than my teddy friend, Daniel Agnew of Special Auction Services, to send them all to their new homes. I think it would be great fun and I will enjoy seeing my beloved bears finding new owners.” “I first started collecting teddy bears because my daughter-in-law bought me a teddy bear and the Teddy Bear Encyclopaedia for a milestone birthday, which sparked an interest and I started looking at antique bears online.

  • For Immediate Release the WORLD's OLDEST TEDDY BEAR
For Immediate Release 30 August 2006 Contact: Zoë Schoon 020.7752.3121 [email protected] THE WORLD’S OLDEST TEDDY BEAR MUSEUM TO BE SOLD BY PRIVATE TREATY AT CHRISTIE’S SOUTH KENSINGTON The Teddy Bear Museum, Stratford-upon-Avon South Kensington – Christie’s are pleased to present, by private treaty, the sale of the world’s oldest Teddy Bear Museum, based in Stratford-upon-Avon. The award-winning museum was opened by self- confessed teddy bear enthusiast and well known broadcaster Gyles Brandreth and his wife Michele, on 4th July 1988. Since then, this popular little museum has gone from strength to strength in one of England’s most celebrated towns. Stratford-upon-Avon attracts five million tourists annually and visitors to the Teddy Bear Museum have ranged from royalty to Tony Blair’s bear, Lynton, who recently spent his summer holidays at the Museum. The collection, personally put together by Brandreth, numbers a thousand bears and related items. It is to be sold as a going concern, along with the Tudor building (once the property of King Henry VIII) that has been its home for the last 18 years. “The Museum has come of age and it’s now time for us to find new owners for the museum and its unique collection. Our children are all grown-up and my work commitments mean that I simply don’t have the time to give it the care and attention it deserves. We want to find new owners for the Museum who will love it as much as we do and see it go from strength to strength.” Said Gyles Brandreth Highlights of the collection include several early Steiff bears, the earliest being Growler, a much- sought-after Steiff rod-bear, circa 1904.

  • Be My Baby”—The Ronettes (1963) Added to the National Registry: 2006 Essay by Cary O’Dell
“Be My Baby”—The Ronettes (1963) Added to the National Registry: 2006 Essay by Cary O’Dell The Ronettes Original label Phil Spector Instantly infectious and memorable, “Be My Baby” has been described as the “Record of the Century” and the “greatest pop record ever made.” It was recorded by the Ronettes in 1963. It was written by Phil Spector, Jeff Barry and Ellie Greenwich and was produced by Phil Spector. It was named to the National Recording Registry in 2006. The Ronettes were a group of girls from Spanish Harlem, sisters Veronica (“Ronnie”) and Estelle Bennett and their cousin Nedra Talley. Before becoming a trio, the young women were a group of five joined by two other cousins, Elaine and Diane. (Sometimes they were also joined by their male cousin, Ira.) They sang together and perfected their harmonies at their grandmother’s house before branching out to play local dances and talent contests. Along with refining their line-up and sound, the girls also defined their look. In his biography of Phil Spector, author Mick Brown says of the group: The standard demeanor of girl groups of the day was one of demure innocence…But the Ronettes looked as if it was a Saturday night and they were cruising for trouble—figure- hugging dresses, hair piled into improbable beehives and lashings of mascara, which transformed the youthful high school girls into vamps. Today, the Ronettes are nearly as remembered for their look (which would later be largely carbon-copied by Amy Winehouse) as for their sound. After first being signed by and recording for the Colpix label (under the name Ronnie and the Relatives), the Ronettes came to the attention of Phil Spector who immediately took a liking to the group and especially to its de facto leader Ronnie.

However, they can be continued at the highest level: That’s why we like Steiff’s manufacturing concept so much. “Manufacture” as an old Latin term: “manus”, the hand, “facere” to do, build or produce something. And if this thought, this concept hadn’t already existed, we at Steiff would surely have invented it. Creating something with your hands. Allowing skill, experience and craftsmanship to flow into the creation process. Bringing in passion, commitment and lots of love for detail into the creative process – in order to bring something extraordinary and unique to life. But that’s what it is: For us, manufacture is far more than just a fashionable word. Because, true to the spirit of our founder Margarete Steiff, we are fully committed to not only honour the tradition of manufacture, but to continually imbue it with new life. Day after day. With every animal leaving our company so steeped in tradition. www.steiff.com 5 Materials Millimetre by millimetre and thread for thread: simply the best. Those wanting to create something special and unique of lasting value will need nothing less than the perfect “ingredients”. This not only applies to many other areas but especially to our Steiff manufacture, where we only use “ingredients” of the highest quality: for every Steiff animal, from head to paw.

  • Steiff Club Magazine 02/2019 2 Editorial Editorial 3
Steiff Club Magazine 02/2019 2 Editorial Editorial 3 Dear Steiff friends, We have found that our competitions are becoming more and more popular. The number of entrants is constantly growing. Of course, there are some significant differences. For instance, the "Pattern bear" competition in the last issue of the Club magazine was nowhere near as popular as the competition that we staged as part of the advance notice of the Margarete Steiff edition in May. What is always exciting yet hard to answer is the question of what ultimately persuades you, our Club members, to enter a competition. Is it the kind of questions, the prizes on offer, or simply the fact that there may be the occasional additional reminder for the competition? We don't know, but we are already curious to see how many of you enter the competition on page 38. You will probably have to do a little bit of research to find the answers. You could also be a winner if you are devoted to the items in the Margarete Steiff edition. Starting on page 12, you can find out how the “Margarete Steiff Elephant on wheels” came into being, and what charming details make this exclusive piece so special. And once again, I'd like to draw your attention to Steiff's co-operation with National Geographic (page 28). This is a subject that affects us all, and should not be ignored. Along with lots of other information, you'll learn that a Teddy bear once inspired a woman who was to become a best-selling writer to write and illustrate her first book (page 31), and you can immerse yourself in newly-opened "Worlds of Steiff" both at home and abroad (from page 42).

  • Carol Connors, Who Co-Wrote the Song with Bill Conti and Ayn Robbins
RUNWAY Exclusive It’s an image burned into the world’s collective conscious: a lone man, dressed in grey sweatshirt and pants, running through Philadelphia and up the steps of the art museum. He’s no thief in the night – he’s “Rocky Balboa”. And the song he celebrates to at the top of the stairs, Gonna Fly Now, also known as the Theme to Rocky, is one of the most recognized songs in the world. So well known and beloved, in fact, that it’s been used in many places since Rocky appeared in 1976, including scenes in television and films like The Fresh Prince of Bel Aire and You Don’t Mess With the Zohan, at Philadelphia Eagles sporting events, and even as a U.S. presidential campaign song. Gonna Fly Now was also nominated for an Academy Award in 1977 – just one of the many distinctions that belong to singer and songwriter Carol Connors, who co-wrote the song with Bill Conti and Ayn Robbins. You may know Connors from her early career; in 1956, she was the lead singer in a little group known as The Teddy Bears, which also included Phil Spector. Spector wrote their best-known song, To Know Him is to Love Him, specifically to show off Connors’ voice, and in 1958 the song reached #1 on the Billboard Hot 100. It was such a powerful song that it attracted the attention of Elvis Presley, who, not long after hearing it, sent for Photo by Timothy Fielding Connors and began a serious relationship with her.
